Updates from Week 4
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Jacoby Brissett remains the starter heading into the regular season, and tight end Trey McBride said Brissett is a vocal leader who leads with action. To end Arizona's joint practice against Green Bay, Brissett completed 21 of 24 passes, including downfield connections to McBride and wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr.. and Michael Wilson. Gardner Minshew II will operate as the backup. Carson Beck continues to nurse his rib injury sustained in the Hall of Fame game and notably struggled during practice the following week; he has not recently participated in practices, losing valuable reps with the starters to close the preseason. During the regular season, there is rarely a practice opportunity for the third quarterback with the starters. Kedon Slovis operated as the fourth quarterback throughout the offseason, leading the preseason with 434 passing yards, while Minshew led with an 83.3 percent completion rate; both had over 48 passing attempts. Slovis could make the practice squad.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Jeremiyah Love is trending in the right direction for a Week 1 debut and has been working with trainers during practices. Tyler Allgeier will operate as the second running back, and head coach LaFleur noted early in the offseason the benefit of utilizing multiple backs, saying, "Not one running back can take all 65 snaps" in a game, and continuing, "We've seen the story when guys are a little bit overloaded…" Allgeier certainly can take carries away from Love but should not take away many targets. James Conner continues to participate in individual drills; he will begin the year on injured reserve and is designated to return. Evan Hull would likely earn the roster spot if the team carries four running backs. Bam Knight earned the fourth running back spot over Trey Benson, who was recently cut, then cleared waivers and reverted to Arizona's injured reserve list, making Knight the third running back for the foreseeable future. Hull led the preseason with 189 rushing yards on 38 carries.
