Updates from Week 1
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Despite being the first overall pick, Fernando Mendoza has been the second-team quarterback for much of camp. While competition exists at the position, AHC Mike McCoy heaped praise on Kirk Cousins, the team's current first-team quarterback. "They're all in this together, they're all trying to help each other out, and it shows out here," McCoy said. When asked about being the team's second quarterback, Mendoza told the media, "Whatever decisions are made at the end, that's fantastic -- and I'm well for it; I just want the team to win, so that's where I'm at." The most notable news from the position, however, was a scuffle between Cousins and Maxx Crosby on Friday. HC Klint Kubiak told reporters, "Those are two leaders on our team going at it. Obviously, fighting in a game [or] you throw a punch in a game, you are out of the game. So we got to be smart." Cousins was not allowed to practice Saturday for disciplinary reasons related to the incident.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Lead back Ashton Jeanty is drawing praise from McCoy, who on Thursday highlighted the running back's spiked usage in the passing game. "He's really taking advantage of what the coaching staff's asking him to do. He understands, and he knows the success you can have as a running back in this system – not only as a runner, but in the passing game," McCoy said. Jeanty also showed his rushing ability in Saturday's practice, breaking a long touchdown run. The team signed veteran running back Dare Ogunbowale on Thursday morning. While he is expected to fill the need behind Jeanty, Ogunbowale will battle Mike Washington Jr. and Dylan Laube for the primary backup role.
