Dan Quinn says Commanders will 'lean in more' on Austin Ekeler

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said on Wednesday that the team plans a bigger role for RB Austin Ekeler with RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt on injured reserve. "Now that he's back, we'll need to lean in more, and he's able to handle a bigger workload now," Quinn said. "It's the right play." Ekeler averaged 7.3 yards per carry in his Week 4 return against the Colts but has carried the ball only four times since, and Croskey-Merritt is out for at least the next month.

Croskey-Merritt out vs. 49ers after re-injury, White and Ekeler cleared

Commanders RB Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt (groin) did not practice all week and has been ruled out for Monday night's game at the 49ers. Head coach Dan Quinn said Croskey-Merritt re-injured the groin he originally hurt in August, adding, "That's harder, on the same injury. We'll work really hard to get him back." RBs Rachaad White (shoulder) and Austin Ekeler (chest) were cleared to play, while RB Jeremy McNichols was a full participant all week and is questionable as he waits to come off injured reserve. "Having a combination of guys," Quinn said, "is what we'll lean on right now."

Croskey-Merritt out vs. 49ers, White and Ekeler to share backfield

Commanders RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) has been ruled out of Monday's Week 6 game at the 49ers, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Saturday. Croskey-Merritt, the team's leading rusher, re-injured the same groin that has nagged him in recent weeks and missed practice all week. RB Rachaad White, who has caught all 10 of his targets for 53 yards and a touchdown, and RB Austin Ekeler figure to handle the backfield work. "His explosiveness in the passing game is a big deal," Quinn said of Ekeler. "So, having some combination of the guys, I think that's what we'll lean on most right now."

With White out, Austin Ekeler active vs. Colts

Commanders RB Austin Ekeler is active for Sunday's game against the Colts. With RB Rachaad White out, Ekeler can help as the third-down back and kick returner, roles in which he has excelled. Ekeler is in a new system and only arrived this week, so his workload from scrimmage is uncertain.
