The Tail End of Free Agency

Jason Wood's The Tail End of Free Agency Jason Wood Published 04/08/2021

The vast majority of moves have been made until we have the next wave after the NFL draft when teams let older redundancies go and pick up veteran holes that weren't filled during the draft.

As a thought exercise, here are the most notable unsigned free agents, by position:

Quarterback

Reaction: The cupboard is bare, as one might expect. Smith will probably get a chance to sign with a contender as the backup.

Running Back

Reaction: A reminder of how quickly running backs go from stars to scrubs. It's unclear what the vets on this list want to do, but James Conner certainly expected a starting role somewhere but -- as far as I know -- hasn't been given a single offer.

Wide Receiver

Reaction: The WR market, which was perceived as soft at the start of free agency, has tightened up. There are precious few credible options on the market right now.

Tight End

Reaction: Yeesh. Zach Ertz is available via trade, but the free-agent pickings are ultra-slim unless someone wants to sign Robert Tonyan Jr to an offer sheet and see if Green Bay is willing to match (he's an RFA).

Tackle

  • Eric Fisher
  • Russell Okung
  • Mitchell Schwartz
  • Alejandro Villanueva
  • Demar Dotson
  • Ricky Wagner

Reaction: Most of these guys are aging and were overpaid, but given the scarcity of tackles and the importance of the position, no other free agent pool has as many guys still un-signed that are likely to play significant snaps for their teams when they eventually sign.

Guard

  • Lane Taylor
  • J.R. Sweezy
  • Nick Easton
  • Trai Turner
  • Chance Warmack
  • Kelechi Osemele

Reaction: Lane Taylor will start wherever he signs. The others will be rotational depth, more than likely.

Center

  • Austin Reiter
  • Joe Looney
  • Ben Garland
  • Hroniss Grasu

Reaction: Austin Reiter is the Chiefs starting center so it's odd they haven't re-signed him, but beyond him, it's a bunch of end of roster guys.
