In the NFL, some players shine as big fish in small ponds, like Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay or Patrick Mahomes II in Kansas City. But what happens when a smaller fish swims into the league's vast, unforgiving ocean? Constant comparisons, relentless pressure, and the risk of being overshadowed or swallowed whole. For Denver Broncos edge rusher Nik Bonitto, fresh off a breakout 2024 season, the arrival of two defensive standouts from San Francisco could turn his promising trajectory into a struggle for relevance.

Is Bonitto destined to be a bust in 2025?

A Look at Nik Bonitto's 2024

Nik Bonitto, the Denver Broncos' edge rusher and a 2022 second-round pick from Oklahoma, delivered a standout third season in 2024, marking his most impressive campaign to date. Registering career highs in tackles, sacks, passes defended, and turnovers forced, Bonitto showcased a well-rounded skill set that solidified his role as a key contributor to Denver's defensive unit.

Anchored by his efforts, alongside a stellar supporting cast, the Broncos' defense ranked among the NFL's elite, often carrying the team through a transitional season led by rookie quarterback Bo Nix. Bonitto's impact extended beyond traditional metrics: his ability to generate splash plays, disruptive pressures, timely sacks, and game-altering turnovers elevated him to one of Denver's most dynamic defenders. Most notably, Bonitto crossed the goal line twice, scoring two defensive touchdowns, a rare feat for an edge rusher that underscores his knack for capitalizing on critical moments.

Yet, despite this breakout performance, questions linger about his sustainability in 2025. While his 2024 stats suggest a player on the cusp of stardom, a deeper analysis reveals potential vulnerabilities, reliance on situational opportunities, inconsistencies against top-tier offensive lines, and the looming challenge of adapting to a more crowded defensive front. Can Bonitto maintain his trajectory as a difference-maker, or will the intensified competition within Denver's revamped defense expose him as a flash in the pan? Why, then, am I hitting the brakes on this seemingly unstoppable force?

Heavy Defensive Investments

Under head coach Sean Payton, the Denver Broncos struggled to carve out a distinct identity until the 2024 season, when a dominant defensive unit emerged as the team's cornerstone. This defense, widely regarded as one of the NFL's best, consistently controlled games, providing a safety net for rookie quarterback Bo Nix to navigate his early mistakes without jeopardizing victories.

However, despite this defensive prowess, the Broncos' front office aggressively bolstered the unit in the offseason, signaling a strategic shift that could reshape the role of edge rusher Nik Bonitto. The high-profile signings of linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga from San Francisco introduce immediate star power to the starting lineup. While Greenlaw's traditional off-ball linebacker role differs from Bonitto's edge-rushing duties, his addition elevates the overall defensive hierarchy, potentially diverting snaps and attention from Bonitto's contributions.

More concerning for Bonitto's outlook is Denver's significant draft investment in defensive talent, particularly at his position. The Broncos selected cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round, fortifying an already stout secondary, but it's their back-to-back selections of edge rushers Sai'vion Jones (Round 3, Pick 101) and Que Robinson (Round 4, Pick 134) that raise red flags. Third-round picks are often expected to contribute early, and Jones appears poised to compete for meaningful rotational snaps. Robinson, while a Day 3 selection, further underscores Denver's intent to deepen its edge-rushing corps.

This influx of talent suggests a lack of long-term confidence in Bonitto's ability to anchor the position, especially after his breakout 2024 campaign. The increased competition could cap Bonitto's snap count, limit his opportunities for splash plays, and expose any inconsistencies in his game, particularly against elite offensive tackles. As Denver prioritizes defensive depth and versatility, Bonitto's once-promising upside faces a critical test, with his role potentially diminished in a crowded and increasingly talented front seven.
