Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
The team has used joint practices as its primary evaluation tool for starters, and reviews were mixed for Lamar Jackson and the offense in sessions with the Indianapolis Colts. Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic noted, "Jackson has had a few really good days and a few subpar ones. [The joint practice] was somewhere in the middle. He looked frustrated at times, hopping around after one pass appeared to slip out of his hands and fall incomplete about 5 yards away, and chastising himself after the workout for misreading a route by DeAndre Hopkins. Yet, Jackson and Ravens coach John Harbaugh considered Tuesday's joint practice against a motivated Indianapolis Colts defense as a step forward. Jackson, for one, looks fast and healthy, and that's all that really matters at this point of training camp." Jackson threw two touchdowns to Mark Andrews but also had a couple of passes intercepted. "I felt like we did pretty good, besides the little ‘BS' interceptions," Jackson said. "Too many, but it happens." In the preseason game, Cooper Rush threw an interception on his first pass but responded with a long touchdown drive on his second series. The Ravens went three-and-out on his third and final possession, and he finished with 16 yards and an interception. Rush is set to be the only other quarterback on the roster behind Jackson. Devin Leary played most of the game and struggled, going 3-of-12 for 43 yards and an interception. Harbaugh said, "It wasn't very good tonight. Has an NFL preseason game ever been won with 59 passing yards? Yes, we'd like to pass for more than 59 yards. I assure you."
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Baltimore is also keeping top running backs Derrick Henry and Justice Hill out of preseason action. The difference this year is that the depth behind them has shined. Keaton Mitchell has been a standout throughout camp and in his preseason debut. He returned three kickoffs for 64 yards and added nine carries for 68 yards and a score. On the first touchdown drive, he rushed four times for 52 yards, including a 23-yard run into Colts territory, followed two plays later by a 22-yard touchdown. "I feel good just coming back from strength and conditioning, OTAs, camp," Mitchell said. "Feel a lot better, a lot more confident. So just being more confident in myself and trusting my knee, that it's stronger, and it can do what I need it to do." Mitchell posted 489 scrimmage yards on 56 touches (8.7 yards per touch) as a rookie in 2023 and could be a wild card in the backfield. His explosiveness makes him a threat to steal touches from Hill, Henry, or both.
