Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Head coach Dave Canales planned to give his starters one series against the Cleveland Browns, but after a quick three-and-out, Bryce Young returned for a second drive and made the most of it. He led a crisp touchdown march, finishing with a precise end-zone throw to rookie wide receiver Jalen Coker. Young completed 4-of-6 passes for 58 yards, a touchdown, and a 137.5 passer rating. In the week's joint practice with Cleveland, Young also impressed by making several strong throws against one of the league's most talented defenses. Canales praised his ability to find receivers downfield, bounce back from early miscommunications in seven-on-sevens, and take advantage of coverage opportunities. Young said competing against another team was "always fun" and highlighted the unity it builds within the roster. Andy Dalton relieved Young in the first quarter of the preseason game and played into the third, going 13-of-19 for 101 yards with a mix of effective stretches and an interception that halted momentum. Jack Plummer closed the game with 6-of-10 passing for 79 yards. The front office has begun early discussions about a potential Young extension.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Chuba Hubbard remains entrenched as the lead back and ran well in joint practices, playing five of the first seven snaps against Cleveland. Rico Dowdle factored in heavily with the starters, taking both early third-down snaps and staying on the field for an extended stretch before Hubbard returned for the third-and-goal play. While Dowdle's early usage suggests he could lead on passing downs, this is unlikely to be a 50-50 split once the season begins. Trevor Etienne didn't enter until late in the second quarter, consistent with typical deployment for a Day 3 rookie. Emani Bailey posted 21 yards on three carries and continues to battle Raheem Blackshear for a roster spot. Given Etienne's muffed punt and late entry, Blackshear's steadiness on special teams could keep him in the mix.
