Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
A viral video of Caleb Williams missing targets and shouting in frustration encapsulates this week of camp. While fans have voiced concern and questioned his confidence, Ben Johnson continues to praise his quarterback's work ethic. Williams has shown flashes with athletic runs and creative arm angles, but has also struggled to get plays in and the offense aligned. The unit committed multiple delay-of-game penalties at Family Fest. After the joint practices with Miami, Johnson said, "We're inconsistent as a whole on offense. You can talk to any position group. We really need to start playing more as a cohesive unit. We just haven't done that. Everyone's kind of taken their turn of not so good. When that happens, someone else has got to pick us up and get us out of that. We're frankly not there yet. That's the beauty of training camp. There are a lot of teams around this league that are dealing with some of the same growing pains." Williams did not play in the first preseason game, with Tyson Bagent earning the start. Bagent has pulled away from Case Keenum in the backup battle, drawing praise from Johnson and looking entrenched as the No. 2 quarterback.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
D'Andre Swift continues to handle the majority of first-team touches, but this mercurial backfield has produced sparse and sometimes contradictory updates. ESPN's Courtney Cronin said, "Roschon Johnson feels like a lock to be the short-yardage/goal-line running back again this year, but also on third down." Two days earlier, Ben Johnson said of seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai, "I think he's a guy we're gonna be able to trust this fall… He's going to be one of those glue guys that you can count on to do it the right way." Johnson has not practiced since early last week due to a foot injury. While details have been minimal, the team worked out multiple free agents and signed Brittain Brown to the roster, suggesting Johnson's recovery timeline may persist. While Johnson may have the inside track due to his experience, coaches remain tight-lipped about roles. Swift and Johnson both sat out the preseason game, while Monangai started and ran effectively in limited opportunities.
