Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Dak Prescott has been a standout for the Cowboys throughout camp and enjoyed one of the cleanest summers of any signal-caller in the NFL. He did not see preseason game action, but Prescott had few, if any, off days as he mastered the intricacies of Brian Schottenheimer's offense. The veteran looks poised to pick up where he left off last year, leading the Cowboys toward a top-five passing attack. The backup battle was one for the ages: Joe Milton III took an early lead and seemed to have cemented the No. 2 spot a few weeks ago, but Sam Howell came on strong over the final two weeks, culminating in a spirited preseason finale against the Saints where Howell threw for 155 yards, two touchdowns, and ran in a game-tying two-point conversion. With Schottenheimer calling the competition neck and neck, Dallas opted to split the difference at cutdowns, officially keeping all three quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
A year ago, Javonte Williams was finishing up a good preseason that gave him the first shot at the starting job, but many expected him to be pushed by then-rookie Jaydon Blue. This summer was much different, as Williams delivered a massive 2025 campaign, earned a big contract extension, and entered camp with the sole objective of staying healthy for the regular season. Behind him, the plate tectonics on the depth chart shifted mightily and ultimately landed in Malik Davis' favor. A few weeks ago, Davis appeared to be the odd man out in favor of second-year backs Blue and Phil Mafah, but as the dust settled, Davis vaulted back into the No. 2 spot thanks to his all-around play and tenacity. In a surprising cutdown development, the Cowboys waived Blue along with Mafah and Israel Abanikanda, leaving Williams, Davis, and versatile fullback Hunter Luepke as the lone backs on the initial 53-man roster. Dallas is almost certainly hoping to slip Blue through waivers and onto the practice squad, but with only two traditional halfbacks currently rostered, do not rule out the front office looking outside the building for additional backfield help in the coming days.
