Updates from Week 1
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
The return of Dak Prescott has stabilized a Cowboys offense undergoing a major transition. Prescott looks fully recovered from his hamstring injury and has found immediate chemistry with George Pickens, connecting for multiple touchdowns in padded practices. He has shown command at the line, accuracy in the red zone, and growing comfort with Brian Schottenheimer’s evolving system. The offense has started to win more practice days, culminating in a breakout Day 7 showing where Prescott hit Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, KaVontae Turpin, and Jalen Tolbert for scores. Schottenheimer’s increased use of pre-snap motion, pistol looks, and under-center reps has given Prescott more variety and helped slow down a feisty defense. Behind him, rookie Joe Milton III has flashed big-arm upside and athleticism but remains a developmental project. Will Grier, who re-joined the team after a stint on the Eagles' practice squad, remains the likely No. 3 quarterback.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Running back remains the most unsettled offensive position, with three players in real contention. Javonte Williams began camp as the presumed lead back and received early praise from Schottenheimer, but his performances have cooled. He has looked a bit slow in the early going, while Miles Sanders and rookie Jaydon Blue have surged. Sanders has had a strong first week and is now taking first-team reps and finding success in full-contact sessions. His vision and lateral agility have stood out.
Blue, meanwhile, has been the biggest riser. His explosiveness, acceleration, and receiving ability have popped since the pads came on. He has quickly earned first-team reps and praise from coaches and teammates alike. Schottenheimer specifically highlighted Blue’s burst and ability to make defenders miss in space. Blue himself cited his command of the playbook and his comfort in Schottenheimer’s system, which he likened to Steve Sarkisian’s offense at Texas. He has also answered concerns about ball security, a noted issue during his college tenure. Deuce Vaughn has quietly been one of the early surprises of camp, mainly running with the backups. Hunter Luepke has also drawn mention for his versatility and toughness. With Schottenheimer valuing physicality and formational flexibility, Luepke appears locked into a roster spot.
