Fantasy Football Impact for Travis Etienne Jr. with the New Orleans Saints
Aside from an injury-marred 2024 season, Travis Etienne Jr. has been one of the league’s most reliable dual-threat running backs since entering the NFL. His 1,399 scrimmage yards last season were the second-fewest of his career, yet still ranked 12th among running backs. Since his first NFL season in 2022, Etienne has totaled 5,136 yards from scrimmage, ranking ninth among all running backs. He's also been incredibly durable over that time, handling a significant workload and missing just two games over the last four years. Etienne's selection as a first-round pick in 2021 raised some eyebrows, but he's proven himself as a reliable and versatile weapon since. The start of the 2026 season will mark the first time Etienne has played without Trevor Lawrence as his quarterback since 2017, his freshman year at Clemson.
Etienne's usage floor has been fantastic. He's managed at least 150 rushing attempts and 45 targets in every season, averaging 224 attempts and 56 targets per season. That has added up to an average of 1,284 yards from scrimmage per season. His efficiency over that time, however, has been pretty average. Among 69 qualifying running backs, Etienne ranks 36th in attempts per broken tackle (15.5) and 46th in yards after contact per attempt (1.8). Etienne's value comes from his durability and versatility, allowing him to stay on the field for all three downs as a runner, receiver, and pass blocker. He should be afforded a similar role in New Orleans.
As of writing this, Alvin Kamara is still under contract. He has expressed his desire to remain in New Orleans, saying, "he'll go drink a pina colada" somewhere if the Saints traded him, implying a retirement. He's also coming off the worst year of his career. At age 30, Kamara missed more games than he's ever missed in a single year (six) and generated just 657 yards from scrimmage, his first ever under 1,000. The Saints got some promising looks from sixth-round rookie Devin Neal before his season ended early with injury. And they still have 23-year-old Kendre Miller, whose season ended after a Week 7 ACL tear. The Saints have a mix of aging veterans and promising talents, and the acquisition of Etienne adds much-needed stability to a wobbly room.
With both the Chargers and Eagles, Kellen Moore showed a penchant for leaning on a workhorse running back. In 2023 with the Chargers, Austin Ekeler handled double-digit touches in every game, averaging 12.8 carries and 5.3 targets per game. In 2024 with the Eagles, Moore aided Saquon Barkley in a record-setting season with 21.6 attempts and 2.7 targets per game. In 2025, Moore's first season as a head coach, he couldn't find that guy. Kamara started the year as the wokrhorse but injuries quickly zapped his burst. Miller started to break out before his season-ending injury. Neal had back-to-back strong showings in Weeks 13 and 14 before a hamstring injury put him on IR. A blend of Audric Estime and Evan Hull limped through the season's finish line. After a disastrous, injury-ridden year from the Saints' backfield, Etienne’s durability likely made him a priority target in free agency.
