Coaching Carousel 2016: Kansas City Chiefs

Jason Wood's Coaching Carousel 2016: Kansas City Chiefs Jason Wood Published 06/03/2016

Deja Vu All Over Again

Doug Pederson leaves Kansas City to coach the Philadelphia Eagles, where he used to be the quarterback under Andy Reid until Donovan McNabb was deemed ready. His quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia was Brad Childress, who was Reid's right hand man for years until he took the Minnesota Vikings head coaching job. As a result of Pederson "returning home" to Philadelphia, Brad Childress is promoted to the offensive coordinator role in Kansas City...under Andy Reid. What's old is new. What once was is now again.

With A New Twist Added to Spice Things Up

Brad Childress is the familiar, comfortable name but he's CO-offensive coordinator along with 38-year old Matt Nagy. Nagy is far less of a known commodity:

As Far As Coaching Changes Go, This Is As Benign As They Come

Some coaching changes require a deep dive, particularly if it's an entirely new staff implementing new systems on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs changes are on the polar opposite end of the spectrum. Andy Reid will continue to call the preponderance of the plays (as he did with Pederson), with Childress up in the booth while Nagy handles the on-field QB communications (in other words, Nagy will relay the plays from Reid to Alex Smith). Expect little if any change to the fantasy outlooks for the Chiefs players; this is really a change in name only.
