Salary Cap Leagues, Should You Settle for a Decent QB?

Footballguys Staff's Salary Cap Leagues, Should You Settle for a Decent QB? Footballguys Staff Published 07/27/2023

A salary cap league affords you the freedom to go multiple ways when addressing the quarterback position - especially in start-1-quarterback leagues.

These articles cover three typical paths to travel:

Should You Pay Up for an Elite QB?
Should You Target a Value QB?
Should You Go Cheap at QB?

In this article, we'll look at the option of going cheap.

Note: All answers assume the following criteria:

  • Start 1 QB
  • 4-point passing TDs
  • $200 cap
  • 12 teams

How do you approach the lack of positional scarcity at the position? Should managers wait as long as possible to see a price cliff at the position when most teams have their starters? Or is counting on someone like Jared Goff because he's only a few dollars too big of a hit at an important position?

Jeff Bell: The advantage of top-tier quarterbacks has created the need to get creative if one misses. Teams without one of the top quarterbacks should view the position like much of fantasy has viewed defenses and kickers and stream into favorable matchups. Players can not simply set and forget options like Jared Goff or Daniel Jones. There is scarcity at the position, and view it like a tight end, with elite players at the top but more reliable streaming options. If your league is aggressive with the position and you miss on the top options, spending three dollars to walk out with three of the top ~18 options is the play, especially if your league has an IR, and Kyler Murray is one of those options.

Dan Hindery: The lack of positional scarcity gives you options and means you do not have to panic if the bidding gets out of control at quarterback in your auction. There are going to be good options if you miss out on the elite players at the position, so you do not have to chase if the value is not there.
