Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
The week began with SNY's Connor Hughes raising alarms about the passing game. Hughes reported that Justin Fields completed just 10-of-21 passes on Tuesday with three interceptions and three sacks, following a weekend where he posted a 34% completion rate and threw two more interceptions during Saturday and Sunday practices. Those struggles fueled concern about the offense's readiness, but Fields responded on Thursday with a sharp 70-yard scoring drive to open practice. He carried that improvement into Saturday's preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, facing their first-team defense. Fields displayed poise in the pocket, took easy completions over the middle, scrambled when needed, and avoided forcing throws. He capped the drive with a decisive 13-yard touchdown run. "My biggest thing was just taking what the defense gave me," Fields said. "We kind of knew their underneath defenders got a lot of depth." Head coach Aaron Glenn echoed the optimism: "We love where [Fields] is at right now. He'll continue to work, but we know exactly where we're going, and we'll continue to work our asses off until we get there." Veteran Tyrod Taylor missed the preseason opener with what Glenn described as "wear and tear" on a knee. However, on Tuesday morning, it was reported that Taylor underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss the remainder of the preseason, per Glenn. The Jets hope Taylor will be ready for Week 1. If he's not, Brady Cook has outperformed Adrian Martinez in camp and appears to have the inside track for the No. 3 role.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
In April, Glenn said he wanted to feature three running backs this season, and Saturday's win over Green Bay suggested that plan is still in place. Breece Hall remains the starter but was part of a steady rotation, playing half of the first-team snaps before exiting after the opening drive. Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis continued into the first half, alternating almost every one or two plays. The likely regular-season approach is Hall and Allen sharing early-down work, with Davis handling third downs thanks to his pass protection and reliable hands. Hall's receiving usage could offset any reduction in carries, especially with the team thin at wide receiver behind Garrett Wilson. "I think Breece is a matchup issue for defensive players, especially linebackers," offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand said. "If they want to play man-to-man coverage with Breece, I'll take that matchup any day. It's been fun to see him develop his route tree—not just out of the backfield but split wide—and find ways to generate explosive plays." Davis made a smart read on Fields' touchdown run, sealing the edge to create the lane, but left the game with an ankle injury. Glenn downplayed the severity, saying Davis should be fine.
