NFL Showdown can be a fickle beast. Success in these contests doesn't come from blindly following median projections, but from creating leverage and building unique rosters. Fading the most popular plays can be risky, yet the biggest edges usually come from identifying the right low-rostered pivots and pairing them creatively with the slate's juggernauts.

With both DraftKings and FanDuel now using similar formats — a multiplier slot (Captain/MVP) that costs 1.5x salary and earns 1.5x points — the nuances between sites come down to scoring systems and contest dynamics. DraftKings' full PPR scoring and larger prize pools reward a slightly different decision-making process than FanDuel's half-PPR and softer fields, but the core principles of Showdown roster construction apply across both.

The advice in this article pertains predominantly to tournament lineups and strategy. For cash builds, median projections remain your best guide. For head-to-head contests, consider projections as well, but when two players have similar projections, side with the lower-rostered option.

Game Theory and Roster Construction

The undefeated Chiefs take on the defending Super Bowl champions, with Seattle sitting as a narrow home favorite. The 42.5-point total tells us to expect moderate offense and scoring, but let's not go nuts over the big names. Rather, the Chiefs and Seahawks are unbeaten and World Champs, respectively, due mostly to their defenses. Seattle leads the NFL in total defense, allowing just 237 yards per game, while Kansas City ranks sixth at 306. Both teams shut off explosive plays with great secondaries, and both can force awful days on opposing passers.

That makes this a particularly interesting Showdown. The highest-priced players are unquestionably "the way to go" – but only in traditional fantasy or cash DFS games. Their ceilings for you will ultimately depend on how your field's rosters shake out.

Injury Roundup

The Chiefs will make do without top wideout Rashee Rice, who's shelved by knee and hamstring issues, while deep threat Tyquan Thornton remains on injured reserve (ankle). Losing Rice is always a disadvantage, but it's certainly not a new sensation for Patrick Mahomes II. Just as concerning is the fact that both starting tackles, Josh Simmons (back) and Jaylon Moore (concussion), will sit tonight. This isn't a great matchup to roll out two backup tackles against.

For Seattle, Zach Charbonnet (knee) remains shelved, and rookie runner Jadarian Price (chest) has landed on IR.

Captain Consideration

  1. Ken Walker III
  2. Jaxon Smith-Njigba
  3. Patrick Mahomes II
  4. Xavier Worthy
  5. Sam Darnold
  6. Emanuel Wilson
  7. Travis Kelce

Quarterback

Patrick Mahomes II (CPT or FLEX)

Mahomes has settled into a groove of "efficient" rather than "spectacular." With modest volume (just 32 attempts per game) and less running than we'd hoped for (two per game excluding kneel-downs), Mahomes has reached 20+ DraftKings points in just 3 of his last 10 full tries. The team would always prefer to win on the ground, without asking too much of a still-recovering Mahomes. That will be doubly true tonight, with both tackles and his wideout on the shelf. Quadruply so against a devastating Seattle defense giving up just 157 yards a game (5.2 per throw).

So, then, I'll be playing Mahomes at a high clip tonight. Remember: we're not chasing the likely, and we're certainly not chasing the obvious. Rather, we're chasing players with the talent and the ability to achieve beyond expectations and beyond matchups. I feel comfortable putting Mahomes in that camp. None of us should be surprised to see Mahomes throw for 275+ yards and multiple touchdowns in a 27-23 semi-shootout.

Running Back

Ken Walker III (CPT or FLEX)
Emmett Johnson (deep FLEX)

The Chiefs signed Walker in the hopes he'd add juice to a dormant ground game. Few of us expected he'd completely transform the offense, but here we are. He's rushed 106 times for 665 yards and 6 touchdowns, adding 14 catches for 95 yards and 2 more scores. His 6.3 yards per carry lead the league, and he's already produced seven runs of 20+. He's also taken control near the goal line, with 13 opportunities from inside the 5-yard line.

With all these different routes to production, Walker can erupt in a number of ways. And tonight, he may do it at slightly less rostership than we'd typically expect. The Seahawks are almost as dominant against the run as they are against the pass; they've now gone 35 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. A Showdown field loves a narrative, and many will back off Walker due to matchup and (expected) game flow.

Johnson is the handcuff, but a clear backup and no more than an injury dice roll. He's well-rounded and will catch a pass or two, but he's no threat to siphon more than an odd series from Walker.
