It never ceases to amaze just how quickly things can go sideways in fantasy football.

It can happen in a number of ways. IDP managers draft what they believe is a balanced and competitive roster replete with upside. But that feeling of satisfaction lasts right up until the games start—and a new feeling takes over.

Despair.

The edge rusher they drafted to anchor the defensive line makes it one game into the season before landing on injured reserve. The linebacker taken to anchor the entire defense comes out of the gate slow and gets slower by the week. The defensive back they took too early does defensive back things and leaves them high and dry.

Not even halfway through the regular season, things are coming undone.

Not that it's happening to me. This year. A lot. But it happens. Really.

However, they can't just surrender to circumstance and call the season a wash. Nope. That's not cool. Being 2-4 or even 1-5 six games in isn't a death knell. It just requires a change in strategy.

Any and all long-term plans? Chuck them out the window. The Week 15 matchups a player has aren't relevant. All that matters is getting a win in Week 7. On keeping the boat above water. Holes in the roster need to be plugged—but with players who can start and produce right now. Who will score points this week?

Those unfortunate, handsome, wise, funny, and humble IDP managers need to start Living the Stream. Now. Is it guaranteed to work? Hardly.

But as the great Vince Lombardi once said, "Winners never quit, and quitters never win."

Week 7 IDP Matchup Plays

EDGE Jermaine Johnson II, Tennessee (vs. Cleveland)

After four years, 13 sacks, and a Pro Bowl nod, the New York Jets traded Johnson to the Titans in the offseason. In six games with his new team, Johnson has already matched last year's sack total after logging a pair in last week's win over the Indianapolis Colts, and he told reporters that he's not interested in attaboys—and only just getting started.

"No hype, just give me my helmet," Johnson said. "I just want to go play football, and I want to be myself and be the player I know I am. I don't really care about potential talk anymore. I've got to go do something this year, and I believe I am top five, top 10 at my position in the NFL, but that's not the case statistically, and I have to go change that this year."

Over his last three games, Johnson has tallied eight total tackles and three sacks—numbers that place him among the top-15 defensive linemen over that span in The Godfather's Default IDP Scoring. Now, he gets to face a Cleveland Browns team that is on pace to flirt with allowing 70 sacks in 2026.

EDGE Princely Umanmielen, Carolina (vs. Tampa Bay)

The Carolina Panthers paid Jaelan Phillips $30 million a season to anchor the pass rush in Charlotte. But six weeks into the 2026 campaign, it isn't Phillips who is leading the team in sacks—it's second-year pro Princely Umanmielen, who has gotten home in three of his five games. While talking to reporters, Phillips said that while we may be surprised, he isn't.

"He's probably the best pass rusher on our team," Phillips said. "I think that he is extremely naturally gifted, and I think that as he continues to develop, he can be a very special player. I think that he already has crazy attributes, and you know he's definitely learning. He's young, so I'm excited to watch him grow. He's athletic. He has crazy bend, really good feel."

Umanmielen's tackle numbers admittedly haven't been great—he's averaging 2.4 total tackles per game. But Umanmielen has already doubled his sack total from his rookie season, and the third-round pick out of Ole Miss faces a Buccaneers team in Week 7 that is allowing the seventh-most fantasy points per game to edge rushers in 2026.

LB Christian Elliss, New England (at Chicago)
