An OG in a New Zip Code

Mike Evans shocked Floridians and NFL fans alike by opting to leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signing a three-year, $42 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Because he is 32 years old and coming off the first down year of his illustrious 13-year career, fantasy managers are cautiously projecting a permanent downshift. Evans is currently coming off the board as the WR27. Unless last year signaled an unrecoverable plunge off the age cliff, that feels like a remarkably low bar to clear.

In a perfect world, NFL greats would finish their careers where they started. Something just feels inherently wrong when Joe Montana suits up for the Kansas City Chiefs or Jerry Rice catches passes in a Raiders uniform. But the fact is, most elite athletes aren't ready to call it a career just because their foundational franchise decides it's time to move on.

Come September, it's going to be weird seeing Evans in a 49ers uniform. He is entirely synonymous with the Buccaneers, not only as the most accomplished receiver in franchise history, but because he remains miles ahead of everyone else who ever wore the uniform.

Evans' Historic Tampa Bay Legacy

Metric Mike Evans (Rank) Margin Over No. 2 (Chris Godwin Jr.)
Targets 1,493 (1st) 72% more
Receptions 866 (1st) 42% more
Receiving Yards 13,052 (1st) 71% more
Receiving TDs 108 (1st) 163% more

However, all legendary eras must eventually come to an end. As a fantasy community, we have to evaluate what Evans can realistically do in a completely new system. His Average Draft Position (ADP) locks him in at WR27, making him a high-end WR3 in standard 12-team leagues. Is that expectation reasonable, or are we overcorrecting?

Defining the WR27 Baseline

What does an ADP of WR27 actually say about our fantasy expectations? To find out, we can look at the five most recent (17-game) NFL seasons and see exactly who finished as the overall WR27:

Historical WR27 Performances (0.5 PPR)

Name Team Year Gms Rush RuYds RuTD Tgts Recs RecYds RecTD FPT/Gm FPTs
Deebo Samuel Sr. WAS 2025 16.0 17 75 1 99 72 727 5 9.5 152.2
Calvin Ridley TEN 2024 17.0 8 55 1 120 64 1,017 4 10.0 169.2
Rashee Rice KC 2023 16.0 1 (3) - 102 79 938 7 10.9 175.0
JuJu Smith-Schuster KC 2022 16.0 - - - 101 78 933 3 9.4 150.3
Christian Kirk ARI 2021 17.0 1 11 - 103 77 982 5 9.9 167.8
Average     16.4 5.4 27.6 0.4 105.0 74.0 919.4 4.8 9.9 162.9

On average, a wide receiver needs to score 162.9 total fantasy points (or 9.9 fantasy points per game) to hit this WR3 baseline.

How does Evans' career stack up against that 9.9-point benchmark?

Rank Team Year Age Exp Gms Recs RecYds Yd/Rec RecTD FPT/Gm FPTs

    Average   14.7 72.2 1,088 15.1 9.0 13.6 199.5

That's a bit of a trick question. We all know he has historically blown past it. Prior to last season, Evans had never finished worse than WR22, a floor he hit all the way back in 2015 while still averaging 11.7 fantasy points per game.
