Gary Davenport looks at some late-slate replacement options for players who could miss Week 4.

Fantasy football is a great deal of fun. Immensely satisfying. This writer considers himself very fortunate to write about it for a living. But it can also be incredibly maddening—and one of the ways it can drive you insane is players in the 4 PM window, Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football who carry a questionable tag into the weekend and then get scratched at the late minute—leaving you with no one to put in the starting lineup in his stead.

We've all been there. A player misses practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Gets in a limited session on Friday. Coaches proclaim optimism regarding their status for the upcoming week. You take the bait and slot them in the lineup, because you were hoping against hope that said player would be available.

But as the great American philosopher Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg once said, "Hope ain't a tactic."

Sure enough, that player gets declared inactive 90 minutes before gametime and you either don't have a player available who you can replace them with or your league shuts down add/drops at the start of the 1 PM slate. Either way, the result is the same—a big fat zero and quite possibly a loss as a result.

So, starting this week at Footballguys, we're going to do something a little different.

First, I'm going to run down the fantasy-relevant players carrying a questionable tag into the late slate—this week at least, it's a short list…because everyone is already dead.

The Pivot Patience Rating

I'm also going to offer up my "Pivot Patience." It's a simple scale of 1 to 5—the lower the number, the less likely I am to wait for inactives to be announced before gluing him to the bench and going to Plan B.

If a player is a "1", just swap them out for a guy playing early and be done with it. If he's a "5", hold the line until the bitter end—and make sure you have someone playing late you can swap them out for.

Then, because I'm just that damned helpful, I will also highlight some players in the late window who are available in at least 70 percent of fantasy leagues at ESPN. Fallback options.

That make sense?

I know, it frightens me when I do it too.

The Week 4 Questionables

This week, these every-week starters are listed as Questionable.

WR Jalen Coker, Carolina (Questionable, Quad)

Coker was a fantasy darling after a red-hot start, but last week against the Cleveland Browns, the third-year pro injured his quad. Coker missed practice Wednesday and Thursday but got in a limited session Friday. Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters that the team won't know Coker's status until at least Saturday.

"We're going to have to see tomorrow," Canales said. "We're going to have to gather more information about Jalen to see where that's headed. So, we'll move him around again tomorrow and then see what it's like on game day."

Pivot Patience: 1

A vertical threat with a pulled quadriceps who is truly questionable and playing on Sunday night just feels like asking for trouble. Even if Coker does go, his snaps and routes could be limited. The Panthers also have a Week 5 bye, so if they sit Coker, he gets an extra week to get right.

WR Mike Evans, San Francisco (Ribs, Questionable)

Evans was carted off the field last week against the Arizona Cardinals, which appeared to leave the veteran wideout in considerable pain. However, the injury wasn't as severe as it looked, and while talking to reporters, Evans said if it's at all possible, he'll be out there Sunday afternoon against the Denver Broncos.

"It's my job," he said. "It's my job, and I take pride in trying to suit up every chance I get. You know, if the injury isn't unbearable and you can't play through it, then I won't play. But if there's something I can play through, I'm going to be there for my team as best I can."

Pivot Patience: 5

My patience here is rooted in the fact that we've seen this movie before. In fact, it has more sequels than the Halloween franchise. Evans has long been a player who will tough it out where possible—if he can play, he'll play.

WR Ladd McConkey, LA Chargers (Foot/Ribs, Questionable)

The 2026 season has gotten off to a miserable start for the Chargers, and now injury has been added to insult for wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who is questionable for Sunday's trip to Seattle after a limited practice Friday. As Chris Roling wrote at SI, it's just one more issue for the third-year wideout.

"While McConkey leads the Chargers with 12 catches for 183 yards and a score, a bulk of that production came in the opener before the rib injury," he said. "We don't, in fact, even know if that rib injury is all the way healed or if it's a nagging issue that will stick around just like this new foot ordeal."

Pivot Patience: 2

The only reason this isn't a 1 is that it's Ladd McConkey. But as Roling said, McConkey's production had already dropped due to the rib injury—he has just seven catches for 101 yards over the last two games combined. Now he's a game-time decision in a bad matchup with the Seahawks. Look elsewhere if possible.
