Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
The Broncos ultimately sat virtually all their key players for the finale, including quarterback Bo Nix, who appeared just once this preseason. Onlookers and teammates, though, don't seem worried about the lack of reps. It's easy to forget that the third-year passer is already 26. "You would think he's been here for a decade," linebacker Alex Singleton told media last week. "He's playing out of his mind, in my opinion… The way he's developed, he takes another step or two every offseason, and he's done that again this year." Besides, the encouraging point this year was seeing Nix appearing in meaningless games at all, four months after ankle surgery.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
There were few surprises among the Denver cuts, so this backfield should move forward as the three- or four-headed monster many expected. J.K. Dobbins is currently healthy and slotted to lead the pack, at least on early downs, and has promised renewed health and availability this year — though that may need to be seen to be believed. RJ Harvey appears to be making his biggest strides as a receiver, and coach Sean Payton has taken notice; that profile wouldn't be a huge surprise given Harvey was a three-down back at Central Florida. Still, most of the preseason hype centered around rookie Jonah Coleman and the explosive, decisive style he showed all camp. "I can't recall another rookie, never mind a fourth-round pick, being given this kind of endorsement this early in his rookie year," Schlereth & Evans' Mike Evans said last week of Coleman's brief preseason appearances. Clearly, the team wants to keep him in bubble wrap. Denver ultimately moved on from Jaleel McLaughlin after two up-and-down seasons, with McLaughlin losing out to Tyler Badie, who is valued for his special-teams work and passing-down fundamentals.
