Rachaad White Contract Terms
The Washington Commanders have agreed to terms with free agent running back Rachaad White, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Fantasy Football Impact for Rachaad White with the Washington Commanders
Jayden Daniels will be reunited with former Arizona State teammate Rachaad White. The two played together in 2020 and 2021, and combined for over 2,000 rushing yards. White joins a Commanders team with only one other running back under contract, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, setting him up for a potentially large role out of the gate. The big question, of course, is what the Commanders do at the NFL Draft. Sitting with the eighth pick, the Commanders are in range to draft Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, the consensus top prospect in this class. You can read more about Love in our Rookie Guide, but he was a Heisman Trophy finalist last year and an exceptional prospect. White's projections are almost entirely contingent on whether the Commanders draft Love or not.
White brings a valuable skill set to any offense. He has the size and pass-game ability to handle three downs, and he's one of the better blocking running backs in the league. Although he isn't known for being a between-the-tackles hammer, it's a skill he's steadily improved through his young NFL career.
In 2023, White was the RB4 in PPR fantasy leagues. He played 17 games and was afforded one of the league's biggest workloads. In 2024, White resumed his normal role at the start of the year. He picked up an injury in Week 6, looked limited in his return, and the backfield workload shifted to rookie Bucky Irving. Going into last season, Irving was the clear lead back. When he went down with an injury, White stepped in. White started the next eight games but was the per-game RB28 over that stretch. The work shifted to Sean Tucker, and White couldn't recapture the role or production he had in his elite 2023 season.
White is a talented running back who has dealt with stout competition over the last couple of seasons. Irving brings an explosive, free-flowing playstyle that few running backs possess. Tucker is a blazing runner with innate contact balance to handle inside and outside runs. That pushed White into more of a rotational, passing-down role. He's had 45-plus targets in each of his four NFL seasons, proving capable. But he may have an opportunity to do more in Washington.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt showed some flashes through his rookie season, but consistency left much to be desired. White is the antithesis of Croskey-Merritt. While the explosives might not be there, he's a technically sound running back who can play all three downs and keep the offense on schedule. Last year, we saw the Commanders' staff prefer those backs, leaning on Austin Ekeler early in the year and Chris Rodriguez Jr. late. Additionally, White's pass-catching skills make him nearly a lock for third-down and hurry-up personnel. Croskey-Merritt is likely to fill in for a chunk of early-down work, but White could end up with a stranglehold on the high-value touches here. That outcome alone should make him a good target in fantasy drafts, assuming he settles in as an RB3 or cheaper.
