Welcome to Week 3 of the 2026 Footballguys Roundtable. Our intrepid panel of fantasy pundits discusses and debates four topics every week. We split the conversation into separate features.

This week's roundtable features these four topics:

Let's roll...

Matt Waldman: Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said in his Monday video conference that RB Ken Walker III "wants that ball" and "he wants a ball every play... he's not asking to be relieved or anything else," but added that rookie RB Emmett Johnson will "continue to get more snaps" as the season progresses to take some load off Walker.

Reid said the goal is to create "a nice balance with those two in there" to keep both backs fresh. Is Emmett Johnson a potential committee back or a promising redundancy plan with bye-week flex potential?

Jeff Haseley: Andy Reid addressing the Kansas City backfield is always enough to make fantasy managers hold their breath, but his latest comments about Ken Walker III and Emmett Johnson tell a pretty clear story.

Here is my take on how this split actually plays out, and why Johnson looks a lot more like an elite-tier stash than an immediate threat:

Kansas City didn't drop $43 million over three years on Walker in free agency just to end up in a frustrating 50/50 committee. Walker is being paid like a premier bellcow, and his performance early on has proven why. Reid praising Walker's desire to "have the ball every play" is just classic Andy Reid validating his alpha back.

When Reid talks about getting a rookie like Johnson more work to keep everyone fresh, history suggests we're looking at a standard 70/30 or 80/20 split, not a committee nightmare. Walker is going to handle the majority of the work: early downs, red zone, and late-game closing duty. Johnson is there to provide 6 to 10 quality breather touches per week and catch a few passes out of the backfield. Could he reach paydirt on a few of those touches? Absolutely, but you can't rely on it.

Right now, Johnson is strictly a deep flex or bye-week plug-in. You can't comfortably start him. As for his Redundancy Value? That's absolute top-tier. If Walker misses any time, which he has in the past, Johnson instantly jumps into high-end RB2 territory with an RB1 ceiling based purely on volume in this offense.

Gary Davenport: It's understandable that the Chiefs have been riding Walker. The fifth-year pro has been phenomenal for Kansas City, averaging a gaudy 6.2 yards per attempt and 145 yards per game on the ground. But he's also on pace to tally 400 carries and 476 touches, and we're talking about a back with an injury history who has never had 230 carries in a season.

Johnson has looked good in limited action—he's averaging almost 7.5 yards per touch. The elusiveness and power he's shown should earn the rookie more touches moving forward. But those touches won't reach a point where the Kansas City backfield becomes anything resembling a true committee attack. Walker's the lead back. Johnson is a potential bye-week flex and valuable handcuff for Walker managers.
