Injury Expectations | Midweek Update | Week 1

Jene Bramel's Injury Expectations | Midweek Update | Week 1 Jene Bramel Published 09/09/2020

Wednesday Media Updates

***The first practice report of the regular season forces teams to declare a specific injury and level of participation. Almost always, we learn that veterans held out for precautionary reasons in training camp truly had minor conditions and are ready for full practices. That's the case again this season.

Here are the players from Monday's Injury Rounds feature who fully practiced Wednesday:

All are currently likely to see a full Week 1 snap count and workload.

***Miles Sanders was in pads and went through a limited practice. Doug Pederson told reporters Sanders could see a limited Week 1 role as the Eagles exercise caution. All indications from the local media have been that Sanders will play. This specific note from Pederson raises some concern. If Sanders does not return to a full practice by the end of the week, it's a good indication today's comments for Pederson will prove truthful. If Sanders isn't fully reconditioned, it's a smart decision to limit his risk in Week 1. More on this as the week progresses and I'll have full gameday analysis through the weekend.

Thursday Update: Sanders was limited again on Thursday. Barring a reassuring full Friday practice and strong indication he'll see a full workload during post-practice interviews, prepare for fewer touches than he'd see in a healthier week.

***Mike Evans did not practice with a hamstring injury after a smooth camp with no reports of missed practice time. Bruce Arians suggested Evans could be game-time decision. Ian Rapoport reported Evans believes the injury to be minor and expects to play. A Thursday DNP would significantly heighten concern.

Thursday Update: Evans did not practice. He's trending toward a game-time decision at best -- regardless of what he's telling others. Expect a limited Friday practice and uncertainty through the release of the pregame inactive list.

***David Montgomery was initially reported to be out 3-4 weeks. Back to a limited Wednesday practice, injury insider Adam Caplan tweeted that the Bears are "actually optimistic" Montgomery could play. Today's limited practice -- mostly stretching and limited individual drills -- is an important test for Montgomery. If his injury responds well to the increased work, he could be active in a limited role on Sunday.

Thursday Update: Montgomery fully practiced on Thursday and spoke to the media. That's a strong sign that his injury not only responded well to yesterday's individual drills but that the Bears are preparing for him to be a significant part of their Week 1 game plan. A full Friday practice would cement his availability for Week 1.

***The Eagles allowed Jalen Reagor to go through individual drills on Wednesday but it's not yet certain whether he's been cleared for contact.

Thursday Update: Reagor fully practiced, which likely means he's been cleared for contact. If his shoulder responds well, another full practice would give him a good chance for a full workload this week.

***Mike Williams was limited but remains questionable to play. He's likely working to maintain his conditioning but may not be ready for contact.

***DeVante Parker, Preston Williams, Julian Edelman, and Mike Gesicki are tracking toward a full workload.

Thursday Updates:

***Kenny Golladay's Wednesday limited workout has now been confirmed as due to a new hamstring injury during practice rather than midweek precaution. His Thursday DNP is not favorable for his Week 1 availability. A limited Friday workout will put him in game-time decision territory, a DNP may raise questions about his chances of playing in Week 2.

***Courtland Sutton suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder in practice. An MRI did not show any additional injuries and Sutton has an extra day to recover before Monday night's game. Pain control and range of motion will be issues through the weekend. Consider him questionable unless he's able to quickly return to limited practice on Friday.

***Local reports are mixed on Diontae Johnson's status for Monday night after he did not practice on Thursday. I'll update through the weekend with any breaking news.

THURSDAY NIGHT INJURY EXPECTATIONS

Here are the key offensive players listed on the practice participation or game status report for Thursday Night Football:

Houston at Kansas City

***Brandin Cooks is listed questionable with a quad injury. Cooks returned to a limited Wednesday workout after missing practice on Tuesday. Unfortunately, there are no clear indications from the local media about Cooks' Thursday night availability. Expect more reports overnight and leading up to the release of inactives. Without a strongly positive report on Thursday, it's hard to trust Cooks to see an effective set of targets. Consider him a high upside, high variance play.

Thursday AM Update: Tom Pelissero is reporting Cooks is a "true game-time decision" with the team expressing optimism he'll be able to play tonight.

***The Chiefs listed Travis Kelce (knee) and Darrel Williams (hamstring) on the practice participation report this week. Both fully practiced and are not listed on the game status report. There is no concern with either player's injury or workload.

Early week practice participation and playing expectations

The Wednesday and Thursday practice participation reports are our first chance to see which players each NFL team is limiting in practice after the previous week's games. Players limited in mid-week practice aren't necessarily in danger of missing that week's game. But they all need to be watched closely.
