Updates from Week 1
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
C.J. Stroud entered the 2024 season with high expectations, but he fell short amid poor protection and a depleted receiving corps. He faced a league-high number of pressures and took 52 sacks, finishing with a 20-to-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s stagnant offense didn’t help. Now under new coordinator Nick Caley, Stroud has more control at the line of scrimmage and is empowered to adjust protections, something that was lacking last year. Stroud is focused on communication with his offensive line and embracing leadership. Wide receiver Nico Collins said, “He’s on a mission every day to get better…you see it every day on the grass field.” With improved support and freedom in the system, Stroud is positioned for a bounce-back season. Davis Mills is the No. 2, with rookies Graham Mertz and Kedon Slovis competing for developmental spots.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Joe Mixon remains on the non-football injury list as he recovers from a foot and ankle injury sustained away from the team. The Texans are targeting a Week 1 return, but head coach DeMeco Ryans and general manager Nick Caserio have declined to provide a definitive timeline. Ryans expressed frustration with the questions, saying, “Nothing’s changed with Joe,” and emphasizing that injury details are personal. The team signed Nick Chubb to a one-year deal, though his role is far from assured. Chubb is returning from multiple injuries, including a broken foot and a major knee injury that required two surgeries. While Ryans admitted Chubb may not return to peak form, he praised the veteran’s passion and professionalism. Chubb has yet to show his old explosiveness, and with a revamped offensive line, the run game may take time to gel. Rookie Woody Marks has capitalized on extra reps and emerged as a camp standout, especially as a pass catcher. He was named the offense’s “MVP” of the first week. Dare Ogunbowale, Jawhar Jordan, and Dameon Pierce are also competing for roster spots. This remains one of the most unsettled depth charts in camp.
