Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Jalen Hurts has carried himself with the confidence of a reigning Super Bowl MVP, showing full command of Kevin Patullo's offense, which has featured a more balanced mix of 11- and 12-personnel groupings along with added pre-snap motion. While his execution has had ups and downs over the past two weeks, there has been no wavering in how coaches view his readiness for the season. "You build those things based off of time and reps and having that effort put in," Hurts said after a recent session, praising the chemistry built with receivers like Jahan Dotson during A.J. Brown's absence. Sirianni has echoed that confidence, noting that Hurts is "in complete control" of the unit. Behind him, Tanner McKee has solidified his place as one of the league's top No. 2 quarterbacks with a commanding preseason debut, completing 20 of 25 passes for 252 yards and three total touchdowns against Cincinnati. Dorian Thompson-Robinson has outperformed rookie Kyle McCord in recent practices, creating a roster decision on whether to keep three or even four quarterbacks.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Saquon Barkley has looked locked in from the start of camp, drawing praise for his conditioning, leadership, and daily intensity. Observers note he is practicing with the same edge that fueled his MVP-caliber 2024 season. Jalen Hurts called the chemistry between them "a product of time and reps," and Barkley has remained a vocal tone-setter on the field. The competition for the No. 2 job remains one of the more intriguing roster battles. Will Shipley has seen stretches of work ahead of A.J. Dillon in both practices and the preseason opener, and his versatility could keep him in that spot if the trend holds. Dillon offers proven early-down experience, but Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice projects he may not make the initial 53-man roster, with the team potentially stashing him on the practice squad and bringing him up later. Ben VanSumeren is attempting to make the roster as a fullback after converting from linebacker, but his offensive usage in camp has been limited, and much of his value would need to come on special teams.
