NFL Showdown can be a fickle beast. Success in these contests doesn't come from blindly following median projections, but from creating leverage and building unique rosters. Fading the most popular plays can be risky, yet the biggest edges usually come from identifying the right low-rostered pivots and pairing them creatively with the slate's juggernauts.

With both DraftKings and FanDuel now using similar formats — a multiplier slot (Captain/MVP) that costs 1.5x salary and earns 1.5x points — the nuances between sites come down to scoring systems and contest dynamics. DraftKings' full PPR scoring and larger prize pools reward a slightly different decision-making process than FanDuel's half-PPR and softer fields, but the core principles of Showdown roster construction apply across both.

The advice in this article pertains predominantly to tournament lineups and strategy. For cash builds, median projections remain your best guide. For head-to-head contests, consider projections as well, but when two players have similar projections, side with the lower-rostered option.

Game Scripting and Roster Construction

Thursday night brings together two teams that have spent 2026 making a convincing case for—and then against—themselves. Carolina scored 30-plus points in three of its first four games, later beat Philadelphia on the road, and then returned home to get throttled by a one-win Tampa Bay team. Green Bay has been equally difficult to trust. The 4-3 Packers have one convincing victory, a 31-7 dismantling of Chicago in Week 5; otherwise, they have alternated between losses and wins that inspire more relief than confidence. Both teams have shown enough to win this game and enough to give it away.

Last season's meeting offers Green Bay a reminder of what happens when Carolina is overlooked. The Packers were 13-point favorites at Lambeau before the Panthers walked away with a 16-13 victory on a field goal as time expired. This time, I expect Green Bay's approach to revolve around Josh Jacobs, making his second appearance of 2026 after missing the first six games. Before his return, the Packers ranked last in rushing yards per game. Carolina's league-worst rush defense, allowing 153.3 yards per game, gives them an opportunity to establish something that has been missing all season. Expect Jacobs to get an early chance to set the tone.

For Showdown roster construction, I favor a balanced 3-3 build, with 4-2 Packers lineups making sense if you expect Green Bay to control the game. The Packers' 25.5-point implied total and Carolina's 22 suggest more scoring than I anticipate. Both defenses rank in the bottom seven against the run, giving each offense a reason to lean on Chuba Hubbard and Josh Jacobs. If those rushing attempts produce sustained, clock-consuming drives, possessions and passing upside could be harder to come by. I'm building for a game decided by the running backs, with Green Bay doing just enough to avoid another Lambeau letdown. Prediction: Green Bay 21, Carolina 17.

Injury Roundup

The Panthers are battered on the offensive line, with guards Damien Lewis and Torricelli Simpkins III ruled out for Thursday’s game and right tackle Taylor Moton on injured reserve. Those absences could give Green Bay’s pass rush an opening a week after Bryce Young was sacked five times. On defense, cornerback Akayleb Evans is also out, further thinning Carolina’s secondary, while linebacker Jaelan Phillips will miss a second straight game, removing a pass-rushing threat against Green Bay’s reshuffled offensive line.

Green Bay has protection concerns of its own, with offensive linemen Sean Rhyan and Travis Glover both ruled out, leaving Jordan Love behind a depleted interior line. Linebacker Zaire Franklin will miss a second straight game, a favorable development for Chuba Hubbard and Carolina’s ground game. The biggest injury to monitor for Showdown purposes is Matthew Golden, who is questionable with foot and shoulder injuries after limited participation in Wednesday’s walkthrough. His absence could create additional opportunities for Savion Williams and Bo Melton.

Captain Considerations

  1. Josh Jacobs
  2. Chuba Hubbard
  3. Jordan Love

Quarterback

Bryce Young (FLEX)

Bryce Young draws a difficult matchup against a Green Bay defense allowing the fifth-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks. He also enters Thursday coming off his worst performance of 2026, an 8.4-point DraftKings outing marred by three turnovers. Even so, Young projects to be the most popular Panther because quarterbacks generally offer a scoring floor that other positions struggle to match. I'm willing to roster him, but my strongest reason is Jalen Coker: pairing them gives you two ways to benefit if Coker delivers the performance I anticipate. Without Coker, I'm less inclined to pay $9.6K for Young behind Carolina's depleted offensive line. In those builds, I'd lean toward Chuba Hubbard and bet on the Panthers attacking Green Bay's more vulnerable run defense.

DFS Takeaway: Young is primarily a stacking play with Coker for me, rather than a quarterback to roster automatically. If fading that connection, favor Hubbard and build around Carolina finding its success on the ground.
