NFL Showdown can be a fickle beast. Success in these contests doesn't come from blindly following median projections, but from creating leverage and building unique rosters. Fading the most popular plays can be risky, yet the biggest edges usually come from identifying the right low-rostered pivots and pairing them creatively with the slate's juggernauts.

With both DraftKings and FanDuel now using similar formats — a multiplier slot (Captain/MVP) that costs 1.5x salary and earns 1.5x points — the nuances between sites come down to scoring systems and contest dynamics. DraftKings' full PPR scoring and larger prize pools reward a slightly different decision-making process than FanDuel's half-PPR and softer fields, but the core principles of Showdown roster construction apply across both.

The advice in this article pertains predominantly to tournament lineups and strategy. For cash builds, median projections remain your best guide. For head-to-head contests, consider projections as well, but when two players have similar projections, side with the lower-rostered option.

Game Scripting and Roster Construction

We have a pair of teams headed in opposite directions for this week's Thursday Night Football matchup. The Ravens appear to be on life support, while the Jaguars sit atop the AFC South and are making a legitimate push toward the playoffs. Jacksonville enters this contest with a 5-2 record and the league's second-best defense, credentials that would make the Jaguars a tough matchup even for a healthy Baltimore team. However, the Ravens lost Lamar Jackson to injured reserve after he suffered a thumb injury on the first play of last week's game. Backup Tyler Huntley then suffered a season-ending toe injury. Enter Joe Fagnano, the next man up under center in Baltimore. Who? Exactly.

The visiting Jaguars are 10-point favorites, with Vegas projecting a 25-15 victory. Jacksonville has won 4 of its last 5 contests, with the lone loss coming against the Texans in London. How do the Ravens keep this close? I think they feed Derrick Henry heavily; if King Henry finishes with 30 touches, I would not be surprised. When Baltimore needs to throw, look for quick slants to Zay Flowers and short targets to Mark Andrews that allow Fagnano to get the ball out quickly. Meanwhile, the full playbook will be available to Trevor Lawrence and a Jaguars offense averaging 28 points per game.

The gamescript here feels straightforward: Baltimore will lean on Henry and use short passes when necessary, while Jacksonville will look to build an early lead before taking the air out of the ball. That combination points toward a low-scoring game that the Jaguars control, even if the final margin falls short of the spread. For your roster builds, it makes sense to go heavier on Jacksonville, with a 4-2 distribution as a starting point and 5-1 builds in play if Baltimore's offense offers little resistance. Expect a boring game and you won't be disappointed. Prediction: Jacksonville 20, Baltimore 13

Injury Roundup

Baltimore’s run-heavy approach could get a boost if Jacksonville defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton (knee) is unable to play after leaving last week’s game and missing practice this week. The bigger DFS question, however, is in Jacksonville’s backfield. Bhayshul Tuten (ankle, foot) has not practiced this week and is a game-time decision who, if active, could be limited at best. His absence would put Chris Rodriguez Jr. in the lead role in a game where the Jaguars should be protecting a second-half lead.

Baltimore’s key skill players are available around Fagnano: Henry and Flowers are off the injury report, while Andrews has been a full participant despite a hand injury. The concerns are on defense, where safety Jaylinn Hawkins (knee) is out and cornerback Nate Wiggins missed Wednesday’s practice. Hawkins’ absence helps Lawrence and the Jaguars’ passing game; losing Wiggins would further improve that matchup.

Captain Considerations

  1. Chris Rodriguez Jr.
  2. Trevor Lawrence
  3. Parker Washington

Jaguars Showdown Players

Quarterback

Trevor Lawrence (CPT or FLEX)

My general approach to Showdown builds over the years has been to jam both quarterbacks into my lineups and go from there. The reasoning is straightforward: quarterbacks typically offer a reliable path to double-digit fantasy points, and pairing them with their receivers creates scoring correlation and tournament upside. Joe Fagnano makes that approach less appealing this week, but Trevor Lawrence remains firmly in play. He has thrown 7 touchdown passes over the past two weeks, and Jacksonville should have its way with Baltimore. Even though I expect the Jaguars to lean on the ground game once they establish a lead, TLaw could be the reason they build that lead in the first place. Against a Ravens defense that has surrendered at least 25 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in each of its past two games, he is difficult to ignore.

DFS Takeaway: Lawrence is a priority Flex play, with Captain appeal in builds where Jacksonville does its scoring through the air. Pair him with at least one pass catcher, but recognize that a comfortable lead could limit his second-half passing volume.
