In IDP leagues, no position is more important than linebacker—the reality is that in most leagues, if you don't have a strong group of linebackers, you're done. Cooked. It's all over but the crying. Linebackers are usually the highest-scoring and most consistent defensive players in fantasy—and it isn't close.
The reason for that is tackles. Linebackers who rack up big-time tackle numbers have both a high fantasy ceiling and a high floor. And while talent is, of course, a factor in which linebackers pile up the stops, there's another major consideration—opportunity.
The key to opportunity for most linebackers is simply being on the field. Snaps. It's hard to tackle a guy from the sideline—unless you are Mike Tomlin.
That joke stays in this column for eternity. Forever. And then after that. Whether Tomlin is coaching or not.
The problem is that in this day of the nickel as the NFL's de facto base defense, the age of three off-ball linebackers on the field most of the time is deader than the dinosaurs. As a matter of fact, with many NFL teams playing either more dime or three-safety looks, there are more than a few situations in which just one off-ball linebacker is on the field for a team.
Usually, that lone linebacker is wearing a sticker on his helmet—the "green dot" signifying that the player is wearing the helmet communicator on defense and relaying defensive play calls. That player very rarely leaves the field, and while teams sometimes use a safety in that capacity, the overwhelming majority of NFL teams assign the green dot to a linebacker.
As the ranks of every-down linebackers decline each year, identifying green-dot linebackers is critical for IDP managers. To provide those managers with that valuable info, once again in 2026 at Footballguys, we'll maintain an updated list of who's wearing the green dot for all 32 NFL teams and who the other "three-down" linebackers are.
There will also be notes to keep fantasy managers apprised of why any changes to the list occur, whether due to injury or performance. The dot can (and will) change hands.
Just three weeks into the 2026 campaign, the linebacker position has descended into chaos. Injuries continue to mount. So do the ranks of the prominent linebackers who haven't come anywhere close to meeting expectations this season. For every IDP manager who is cruising along with a strong linebacker corps, there are two who are trying to find a method amid the madness. Find order amidst the anarchy.
The thing is, this isn't the exception. It's the rule. Every single season brings a trip down Bizarro Boulevard. Very few IDP squads make it through a season without going through some trials and tribulations at IDP's most important position.
The managers who best weather those choppy seas are the ones who wind up sailing to glory. The ones who don't? They wind up a wreck on the bottom.
Table time.
Note: Here at Footballguys, we set the benchmark for three-down linebackers at a 75 percent snap share. Linebackers listed with an asterisk (*) may not hit that benchmark on a weekly basis this season.
NOTES
Carolina Panthers
After a red-hot two-week start to the season, over which Devin Lloyd was the highest-scoring linebacker in The Godfather's Default IDP Scoring, the fifth-year pro missed Week 3's road loss to the Cleveland Browns with a calf injury. But Lloyd was back at practice this week and heads into Sunday night's home matchup with the Detroit Lions without an injury designation. Pour one out for Tyrel Dodson—Lloyd will wear the green dot in Week 4, with Bobby Okereke sliding back into the WILL spot.
