Fantasy Football Impact for Romeo Doubs with the New England Patriots
As NFL.com's Eric Edholm suggested, Doubs is getting a hefty payday for a player who's never had more than 724 yards receiving in a season.
Still, he was considered one of the top receivers available this cycle.
Doubs has caught 202 passes for 2,424 yards (12.0-yard average) and 21 touchdowns in 59 games (50 starts). He's also been highly productive in four career playoff games, catching 20 passes for 371 yards and two TDs, including an eight-catch, 124-yard, one-TD outing in the Packers' playoff loss to the Bears this past January.
But more generally, Doubs has been a workman-like presence, catching at least 46 passes while delivering at least 601 receiving yards in each of the past three seasons.
He joins a receiver group that currently includes Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III.
The Patriots released wide receiver Stefon Diggs last week, leaving a hole for Doubs to fill in their passing offense.
As SBNation's Bernd Buchmasser noted, while primarily a perimeter weapon capable of playing the X, Doubs also can line up at the Z or even in the slot when the team goes to condensed looks. Naturally, catching the football is his main task, but New England would not have brought him in if he couldn't also help out as a blocker in the run game.
Before free agency, the Patriots were connected to other free agents, including Alec Pierce and Jalen Nailor. After Pierce re-signed with the Colts and Nailor left the Vikings for the Raiders, the Patriots pivoted to Doubs.
But is Doubs a WR1 candidate for the Patriots?
And with Doubs in the fold, are the Patriots out of the receiver business? More specifically, will this deal prevent them from pursuing A.J. Brown?
According to MassLive's Karen Guregian, not necessarily. A source tells her the Patriots haven't folded up the tent on the pursuit of Brown.
But for now, assessing Doubs' value is the job.
Taylor Kyles of the Patriots on CLNS points out that Doubs' $17.5 million annual average places him in the same category as Wan'Dale Robinson and Jerry Jeudy, and below Jakobi Meyers. Boston Herald staffer Doug Kyed doesn't see a significant difference between a 33-year-old Diggs and a 26-year-old Romeo Doubs.
In 21 games last season, Diggs had less than 50 yards in 14 of them. In 17 games last season, Doubs had less than 50 yards in eight of them.
Diggs finished 2025 as WR25. Expecting Doubs to finish in that same WR2/WR3 range is a good starting point.
