Many quarterbacks have benefited from a semester at Kevin O'Connell University. As an offensive coordinator, he aided Matthew Stafford in an unbelievable 2021 comeback season that culminated in a Super Bowl win. Kirk Cousins had his best season as a Viking in 2022, O'Connell's first year in Minnesota. Sam Darnold went from cast-off to Super Bowl winner in the blink of an eye, with a season under O'Connell's tutelage. Nick Mullens and Joshua Dobbs, while volatile, showed career highlights under O'Connell. The myth of his Midas Touch only grew when Daniel Jones looked revitalized after half a season on O'Connell's bench, then moved on to Indianapolis and looked like a completely new quarterback. Kyler Murray isn't blind to this trend, making Minnesota a natural landing spot. With the Cardinals eating his $36.8M salary, the Vikings are able to bring Murray in on a veteran minimum salary. Murray's contract includes a no-tag clause, ensuring he'll be able to hit the free market going into the 2027 season.
Murray's career has been an absolute roller coaster. The first overall pick in 2019, Murray lived up to the hype with a Rookie of the Year award. He made the Pro Bowl in the next two seasons, providing remarkable consistency as a dual threat. Naturally, the Cardinals gifted him with a monstrous extension: five years, $230.5 million. Months later, in Week 14, just after returning from a hamstring injury, Murray tore his ACL. He returned in Week 10 of the following season, looking like a shell of his former self. His numbers in 2024 bounced back, not far off from his early-career production, but the offense appeared stale. The Cardinals finished 8-9, missing the playoffs. 2025 picked up right where 2024 left off. After a 2-3 start, Murray sustained a mid-foot sprain, which ended his season. The excitement surrounding the start of Murray's career was seemingly overshadowed by injuries, a 38-48-1 regular-season record, and a 0-1 playoff record. He'll have a much-needed opportunity to reset in Minnesota.
Initial reports indicate there will be a competition between Murray and J.J. McCarthy in camp. It's not crazy to think Murray has the inside track. McCarthy missed his rookie season due to a knee injury suffered in training camp. He looked overwhelmed at times in Year 2, while simultaneously dealing with a litany of injuries. Murray, despite some of his shortcomings, has a desirable pedigree, and one that O'Connell is familiar with. Like Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford, and Sam Darnold, Murray was drafted early with high expectations. Having NFL experience could help him quickly get up to speed with a proven system. He'll have reliable options around him: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones Sr. He'll be in a prime position to take the reins while McCarthy theoretically gets some extra time to develop.
Murray's rushing upside has been among the best in the league since he entered it. Since 2019, Murray's 3,139 rushing yards rank fourth, behind only Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts. His 19.4 fantasy points per game are seventh over that same stretch. The rushing upside alone puts him inside top-twelve consideration every year, and the upside in an efficient offense with elite playmakers could set him up for a career year in 2026. Murray has a lot riding on this year's success, potentially setting him up for a big payday next offseason.
