Now that fantasy owners are in the thick of preseason research, preparing for their favorite league's draft, injury news is critical to compiling draft strategies/draft sheets. Particularly worrisome are new injuries, like the recent concussion to Dez Bryant (August 22), as we have little data to go on prior to the draft-day event. This article will summarize the known status of currently injured/rehabbing NFL players at the skill positions who are likely to make their team's final 53-man roster - but don't expect to find sixth-string tight ends among those listed below. This is a summary of the ongoing injury rehabilitations for fantasy-relevant NFL players at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end and place kicker as we hunker down for the all-important third week of preseason games, which we'll all dissect carefully before updating our draft sheets for the final cut of projections/rankings. This report will be updated through the morning of August 25 before the third week of preseason games kick off. Quarterbacks
Teddy Bridgewater, MIN: Bridgewater missed the second preseason game on August 18 due to a sore shoulder. He threw during team drills on Tuesday, August 23. Bridgewater said on August 24 he expects to play in the preseason game against the San Diego Chargers Sunday, August 28. Bridgewater did not comment much about his (minor) shoulder injury.
Joe Flacco, BAL: Flacco tore both the ACL and MCL in his left knee on November 22. As of June 16 all indications from the Ravens are that Flacco will be ready to play when regular season starts. Flacco opened training camp on July 25 on the active roster, but is expected to be limited to non-contact drills for most (if not all) of training camp. Flacco said he felt comfortable during practice Thursday, July 28, but wished he was able to complete more passes. He did not try to run during practice but did move around in the pocket. Flacco didn't play in the first preseason game, but he did address the knee's progress on August 16, when he stated 'I don't think about it when I'm out there. It's not perfect. I can feel it standing here right now a little bit. It's not totally normal. But, as far as going out there and operating on the field, running around and doing things, I don't pay attention to it.' Flacco has missed the first two preseason games but is expected to play in the preseason game against the Detroit Lions Saturday, August 27. according to reports on August 21. On August 25 Flacco indicated he expects to play about one half of the game on Saturday.
Jared Goff, LA: Goff (shoulder) played limited snaps in his preseason debut Saturday, August 13, against the Dallas Cowboys - head coach Jeff Fisher said Goff banged up his shoulder. 'He took a hit early, his non-throwing shoulder was a little sore so I didn't want to mess with it at all,' Fisher said after the contest. On August 17 coach Fisher said Case Keenum is still 'clearly ahead' of Goff. Goff took a few snaps with the first team on Wednesday, August 17 and is expected to see some time with the starters in the second preseason game. Goff completed 8-of-12 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game (August 21).
Bruce Gradkowski, PIT: Gradkowski (hamstring) has a sizable hamstring tear, according to a source on August 15. He may be out for an extended period of time.
Taylor Heinecke, MIN: Heinecke is out for at least three months after severing a tendon in his left foot trying to break into his friend's apartment when they were locked out.
Brett Hundley, GB: Hundley (undisclosed injury, thought to be an ankle issue) was considered questionable for practice Wednesday, August 3, because of an injury he suffered during practice Monday, August 1. He was not scheduled to play in the Hall of Fame game (even before it was cancelled). Hundley is expected to appear in the second preseason game after returning to practice on August 14. Hundley gave it a go in the second preseason game, but aggravated his sore ankle and is likely to miss the third preseason game.
Cardale Jones, DET: Jones (shoulder) is dealing with a sore shoulder, according to head coach Rex Ryan, on August 22. He may miss some practice time due to the injury.
Colin Kaepernick, SF: As of June 2, 2016, 49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins admitted he had 'no idea' when Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee surgeries after going on IR last season) will be cleared for football activities. Kaepernick was not cleared for team drills during minicamp, though he did do some individual work - he is emphasizing flexibility in his rehabilitation/personal training, but stated on June 10 that he intends to continue with his usual style of play once he gets back on the field: 'My style of play is my style of play,' Kaepernick said on June 11. 'I have to be able to continue with that and be able to do those things and do what this offense requires of me.'. The team hopes Kaepernick will be able to practice fully once training camp rolls around. As of July 26 the Sacramento Bee reported that Kaepernick has been cleared for the active roster once training camp opens. CSN Bay Area reported on August 4 that Kaepernick has been making runs off the read-option during training camp - he's seen as locked in a tight race for starting quarterback in San Francisco as of the first week of August. However, Kaepernick has started missing practices as of Monday, August 15 due to what various sources are calling 'dead arm' - his passing arm/shoulder isn't functioning properly. Kaepernick (arm) participated in the handoff drills during practice Wednesday, August 17, but did not participate in any of the throwing drills. Kaepernick did do some throwing on a side field. Kaepernick (arm) is 'on track' to play against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Chip Kelly on Wednesday, August 24.
Thad Lewis, SF: Lewis (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament against the Houston Texans Sunday, August 14, according to a source. He is out for the season.
Kellen Moore, DAL: Moore (broken ankle on August 2) will be sidelined 3-4 months.
Matt Moore, MIA: Moore has been diagnosed with a concussion as of August 20 and will take part in the concussion protocol. He may miss the third preseason game as a result.
Mark Sanchez, DEN: As of mid-May 2016, Sanchez had surgery on his left (non-throwing) thumb to correct ligament damage. Though he was initially expected to miss OTAs, by May 31 he was fully cleared to participate in OTAs, and by June 7 Sanchez was working exclusively with the first team in Denver. As of July 2 he is locked in a battle for the starting job with Trevor Siemian that will be decided in training camp. As of July 27 the Broncos indicated that Sanchez will get first-team reps (along with Siemian) once training camp opens. The first (unofficial) depth chart of training camp listed them as tied for the starting quarterback job on August 8. Sanchez is set to start in the first preseason game on August 11, while Siemian will play in the second quarter. As of August 14, Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak hasn't announced if QB Mark Sanchez or QB Trevor Siemian will start the club's second preseason game against the San Francisco Giants Saturday, August 20. Each quarterback played a quarter during the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears Thursday, August 11, and both players will continue to receive starter reps in practice on a daily basis. Sanchez has not started for Denver since the first preseason game, and expects to be the #2 for the third preseason game as well.
Trevor Siemian, DEN: Siemian missed practice on Tuesday, August 23 due to a sore shoulder - but he returned to practice Wednesday, August 24, and took about 80% of his typical workload. He's expected to start his second straight preseason game Saturday, August 27.
Tony Romo, DAL: Romo had surgery on his troublesome collarbone back in March, 2016, but he has participated in all OTAs and minicamp without a hint of an issue - he is set to return as the team's starting quarterback once training camp opens. On August 2, Romo was experiencing some back stiffness but he hasn't missed significant reps during training camp.
Dustin Vaughan, PIT: Vaughan suffered a broken thumb on his throwing hand during the second preseason game and does not have a timetable for his return.
Carson Wentz, PHI: Wentz suffered a fractured rib during the first preseason game (August 11), and will miss two-to-three weeks according to initial estimates on August 13. Wentz (rib) will travel for the preseason game Thursday, August 18, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he will not play in the game. As of August 24, Wentz is still not practicing due to the ribs injury.
Running Backs
Ameer Abdullah, DET: Abdullah tore the labrum in his shoulder during December, 2015, but played through the injury. It was surgically repaired in January, 2016, and Abdullah has been rehabbing the shoulder since. On May 28, Lions' head coach Jim Caldwell said Abdullah is 'recovering nicely' but declined to cite a timetable for Abdullah's return to practices. On June 6, Lions GM Bob Quinn said Abdullah will be ready for training camp. Abdullah opened training camp on the active roster as of July 25. As of August 6, Abdullah is participating in training camp practices, but he is wearing a red non-contact jersey - it is unclear when he'll resume taking physical contact. Abdullah did not participate in the first preseason game on August 13. Abdullah was not in a no-contact jersey at the Saturday, August 20 practice, marking the first time this preseason that he has been out of the non-contact jersey.
Jay Ajayi, MIA: Ajayi missed time early in training camp due to a sore knee, but returned to practices on August 5. Ajayi had two carries for six yards and saw two targets for zero receptions in the first preseason game at the Giants. Ajayi said Monday, August 22, he and his teammates are preparing for the preseason game Thursday, August 25, like it is a regular season game and he is looking forward to the extra time on the field.
LeVeon Bell, PIT: Bell asserted on July 9 that his knee (torn MCL, PCL) is fully healed and that he will be ready for regular season. 'I'm going to be ready,' Bell promised. 'I don't think I'll really get tackled until a preseason game or maybe in the regular season. But cutting, running routes, everything is back to normal.' Bell has not suffered a setback since he was cleared for individual drills at OTAs - all lights looked green on Bell on the eve of training camp. However, Bell was hit with a four-game, substance-abuse related suspension from the NFL just before training camp - though Bell has been cleared to be on the active roster for training camp (indicating a positive outcome for his MCL/PCL rehabs), he is still suspended for the first three games of the 2016 season after appeal/settlement with the NFL. As of August 6, Bell has stated his knee feels 100% recovered: 'Even jump cutting, if I decide I want to jump over somebody, jump in the end zone, whatever it may be, I feel I'll be able to do all that. My leg feels great. I felt I got all my speed back.' Multiple reports out of training camp have indicated that Bell looks like he's fully recovered and back at the top of this considerable abilities. On August 6, Bell was 'running and cutting without thinking about his surgically repaired knee', according to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler. Bell did not participate in the first preseason game Friday, August 12 or the second preseason game, Thursday, August 18.
LeGarrette Blount, NE: Blount missed spring workouts but was cleared for the start of training camp on July 25, 2016 - he is said to be past his 2015 hip injury and in good health as of late July. Local reports from Karen Guregian (Boston Herald) on the first day of training camp (July 29) indicated that 'Blount looked fit, didn’t seem slow hitting the holes in a noncontact practice, and caught the ball pretty well out of the backfield.' Blount had 9/20/1 rushing in the first presason game vs. the Saints. As of August 24, Blount is practicing and playing in the preseason - his hip injury appears to be fully healed.
Jamaal Charles, KC: Charles tore his right ACL on October 11, 2015, and has since been grinding through rehab from reconstructive knee surgery. He did partially participate in practice at mid-June mini-camp, doing individual drills with the coaching staff. On June 18, head coach Andy Reid indicated that 'We'll have to see with Jamaal. You don't want to take any steps back.' Charles may be held out of preseason while continuing his rehab, but as of early July he is expected to be back for Week One of regular season. Charles was placed on the active/PUP list to open training camp on July 27, as expected. The Chiefs will ease him back into action over the course of the preseason. On August 10, Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said he is hopeful that Charles will be ready for the start of the regular season. Charles was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, and he participated in practice Tuesday, August 16. Charles was limited Wednesday, August 17, but he got through a larger workload than he did the previous day. On Thursday, August 18 he participated in the entire practice, including team drills - Charles' return to the field is accelerating, but he is not expected to play in the second preseason game. Charles (knee) was a full participant in team drills on Tuesday, August 23 including 11-on-11 drills. He is not expected to play during the preseason, though.
Tevin Coleman, ATL: Coleman (foot) participated in individual drills during practice Friday, August 5, but sat out the team drills. Coleman rolled his foot Tuesday, August 2. As of August 14, Coleman was back in practices, but he had to leave Sunday's session due to heat exhaustion. Coleman played in the second preseason game August 18, with 5/16/0 rushing to his credit.
Isaiah Crowell, CLE: Crowell (shoulder) underwent a X-ray on the shoulder injury he suffered in the preseason game Friday, August 12, but head coach Hue Jackson said it does not appear to be a long-term injury. Crowell played well in the second preseason game vs. Atlanta on August 18 - the shoulder injury appears to be a non-concern.
Kenneth Dixon, BAL: Dixon has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 MCL sprain in his left knee as of July 28 - the injury is considered 'minor' and Dixon is day-to-day as of late July. On July 28, Head coach John Harbaugh said Dixon could return to practice as early as Friday, July 29. Dixon eventually did return to practices on Thursday, August 4 - he seems to have avoided a serious injury. Dixon led the team in rushing with 9/44/0 during the first preseason game against the Panthers. Reports on Wednesday August 24 suggested that Dixon could be part of a running-back-by-committee in Baltimore this year - he appears to be past the knee injury.
Lance Dunbar, DAL: Dunbar was limited to rehab sessions during spring OTAs as he continues to recover from his devastating knee injury suffered last October - Dunbar tore his patellar tendon (which was surgically repaired in October) and also had his ACL surgically reconstructed (in December of last year). Dunbar is expected to miss all of training camp and may be on PUP to begin the 2016 season. Patellar tendon tears are often career-ending for NFL players - Dunbar has a long road back to active status, and there is no timeline for his return as of mid-July 2016. On July 19, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said the team has not 'totally ruled out' Lance Dunbar (knee) participating in training camp. 'He's worked so hard and come so far, so fast – a lot faster than anyone dreamed he could come. We've also got to do what's right in his best interest and certainly not jeopardize any of the hard work he's put into this.' Local reports on August 2 indicated the team is still hopeful that Dunbar may be able to join training camp, but that day has not yet come as of August 10. Darren McFadden (elbow) and Dunbar (knee) were in pads on the side for their rehabilitation work Monday, August 15.
Kenyan Drake, MIA: Drake missed the final day of minicamp with a hamstring injury, but will be ready for training camp, according to reports on June 16. As of July 18 (in the wake of Arian Foster's signing by Miami), Drake was reported to be failing in his quest to become a backup running back to Foster and Jay Ajayi. He was dealing with another hamstring injury as of August 9. Drake (hamstring) finally returned to practice Tuesday, August 23.
Shaun Draughn, SF: Draughn (ribs) wore a blue jersey Monday, August 22, at practice signifying for him not to be hit during practice. He took a blow to the ribs in last week's practice and was sidelined for the second preseason game Saturday, August 20. Despite the injury, head coach Chip Kelly has declared that Draughn is the no.2 RB behind starter Carlos Hyde.
Ezekiel Elliott, DAL: Elliott (hamstring injury) is doubtful for the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, August 13, due to a tight hamstring first experienced on August 3. As of August 10 it appears the injury is relatively minor and the move is precautionary - stay tuned to see what happens in the second week of preseason. Elliott (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, August 10. Elliott (hamstring) returned to practice on Tuesday, August 16, but did not take part in a full session and is not expected to play in the team's preseason game on Friday, August 19, against the Miami Dolphins. The team is being cautious with their featured back. Elliott (hamstring) is expected to play in the preseason game Thursday, August 25, and the plan is for him to see eight to 12 plays. The team hopes to give him looks as a runner and receiver.
Justin Forsett, BAL: Forsett is fully recovered from the broken arm that ended his 2015 season prematurely. He is seen as the starting running back for the Ravens again this season. He was on the active roster as expected when training camp opened on July 25. On August 9, head coach John Harbaugh stated that Forsett is having an effective training camp: 'I see the same running back that we had two years ago, in terms of his speed, his explosiveness, his vision. I know there’s a lot of talk about the other guys, but he’s playing really well.' Forsett didn't appear in the first preseason game. Reports on Wednesday August 24 suggested that Forsett could be part of a running-back-by-committee in Baltimore this year.
Matt Forte, NYJ: Forte did not practice Thursday, July 28, because of a hamstring injury. Head coach Todd Bowles said Forte was considered day-to-day at that point. Forte (ongoing hamstring woes) did not practice Tuesday, August 9, and will not play in the Jets' first preseason game Thursday, August 11, against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Forte (hamstring) said he will definitely be ready to play in Week 1. His goal is see some action in the third preseason game against the New York Giants. Reports on Wednesday, August 17 indicated that Forte was back in practice and looking 'as good as ever'. Forte hopefully will be able to play in the preseason game against the New York Giants Saturday, August 27, as long as he does not suffer any setbacks, according to head coach Todd Bowles on Wednesday, August 24.
Arian Foster, MIA - Foster (Achilles tendon injury/surgery), signed by Miami on July 18, is not expected to be on the active/PUP list when training camps open. He should be in on practices from the beginning of camp, according to comments by head coach Adam Gase out of Miami on July 26. However, as of July 29 he started training camp on the active/PUP list - so Foster will indeed miss the first few practices of training camp. Foster started practicing with the first team on August 1, and coach Gase said he'd practice with the 'ones' all camp. On August 10 we learned that Foster is being held out of the preseason opener, but that is a precautionary move - he's been the best running back in camp according to all reports. Foster will make his preseason debut Friday, August 19, against the Dallas Cowboys, according to reports on August 16. Foster did play, but had a lack-luster 2/-5/0 rushing in a cameo appearance.
Mike Gillislee, BUF: Gillislee (head) left the game following a hard hit at the end of the first quarter on Saturday, August 20, against the New York Giants and was being evaluated for concussion. The concussion was confirmed. Speaking Monday August 22, Bills coach Rex Ryan called Mike Gillislee (concussion) 'probably the No. 2 back right now.'
Melvin Gordon, SD: Gordon had knee surgery to clean up torn cartilage back in January 2016, and he also had a microfracture procedure performed to stimulate the growth of new cartilage. As of May 9, Gordon was participating without limitations at voluntary sessions, and he was said to have enjoyed a successful rehab of the surgery as of May 23. Head coach Mike McCoy said on June 16 that Gordon looked fully healthy at minicamp. 'Melvin has worked extremely hard this offseason. If you had seen him do the conditioning part of the program, you would have never known he was injured. Very pleased with where he's at. I'm really looking forward to him having an outstanding year.' Coming back from the microfracture knee surgery in January, the reports have been positive about Gordon coming out of Chargers camp so far - he was even returning kicks in practice on August 5. Gordon posted 3/12/0 rushing and 1/44/1 receiving at Tennessee in the first preseason game - so far so good. Gordon rushed six times for 18 yards on August 19, against the Cardinals.
Jonas Gray, Ex-JAX: Gray (quadriceps) was released from the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, August 24, after the two sides reached an injury settlement.
Roy Helu, Ex-OAK: Helu should be ready for the start of training camp according to a June 25 report, after having successful offseason hip surgery(ies). However, Helu opened training camp on the active/PUP list as of July 25. He was released with an injury settlement on August 2.
Carlos Hyde, SF: Hyde suffered a stress fracture in his foot in October 2015, but didn't go on IR until Week 14. He had foot surgery after going on IR, and as of April was fully cleared to return to football activities. He impressed new head coach Chip Kelly during OTAs/minicamp, and is set to open training camp as the clear-cut #1 running back for the 49ers. Hyde said on August 11 that he views the upcoming season as a 'make or break' year. Hyde pointed to how effective the new system can be, noting how current 49ers and then Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly helped Eagles RB LeSean McCoy lead the NFL in rushing in 2013. Hyde also believes the up-tempo approach makes defenders tired and allows for big plays. Hyde played in the first preseason game with mixed results, but he seems healthy entering the second weekend of preseason games. He's been declared the starter by head coach Chip Kelly as of the third week of preseason games.
Mark Ingram, NO: Ingram tore a rotator cuff in his shoulder last December, and had surgery to repair the injury on December 10. He enters 2016 as the lead back for the Saints - he is expected to be ready for training camp. Ingram was on the active roster as of July 25, as expected. He is entrenched as the lead back for the team as of August 10, and the shoulder has not been an issue during preseason.
Matt Jones, WAS: Jones suffered an AC sprain in his left shoulder Friday, August 19. The separation is considered to be second degree, and Washington will hold Jones (shoulder) out for the rest of the preseason, but believe he has made 'great strides' in his recovery as of August 22.
Jeremy Langford, CHI: Langford (foot) did not practice Tuesday, August 23, as he continued to recover from a foot injury (his foot was stepped on durig the second preseason game, and he was fitted with a walking boot the next day). Langford was a limited participant in Wednesday, August 24 practice - he is progressing but it is unclear if he will appear in the third preseason contest.
Dion Lewis, NE: Lewis tore his left ACL during the first week of November last season, and wound up on IR. He is recovering well, according to Dr. James Andrews (February 21, 2016), and as of late May he is expected to be ready for Week One of the regular season. Lewis returned to practice sessions on June 13, and appears to be on track for a return to the starting lineup by Week One. He opened camp July 25 on active/PUP, but that move was expected as the Patriots ease Lewis back onto the field. Lewis said on August 6 that he believes he can practice right now, but the Patriots are taking things slow. As of August 18, Lewis has still not practiced at all during training camp. Lewis is expected to miss two months because of his recent, second knee surgery, and likely will start the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list according to reports on August 21.
Tre Madden, SEA: Madden (shoulder) has been sidelined for several days due to a shoulder injury. The severity of the injury is unknown and it is uncertain when he will return to action as of August 6.
Doug Martin, TB: Martin did not play Saturday, August 20, against the Jacksonville Jaguars due to bruised ribs. The decision was called strictly precautionary and Martin is expected to play against the Cleveland Browns in Week Three of the preseason.
Ryan Mathews, PHI: Mathews (ankle injury suffered third week of July) started training camp on the active/NFI list as of July 27. The injury is said to be 'minor' as of late July. Mathews worked with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, August 7, and appeared to be a full participant. He looks fully recovered from the sore ankle. He posted 5/18/0 rushing at the Steelers during the second preseason game.
Darren McFadden, DAL: McFadden had a mid-June surgery on his elbow this year, and the Cowboys have stated his return to action will take about two months. This means that McFadden likely will sit out of training camp and may miss time at the beginning of the regular season, depending on how his rehab from the elbow surgery progresses. McFadden is working hard in his recovery from offseason elbow surgery but is not expected to play in the near future, according to head coach Jason Garrett on August 10. McFadden (elbow) and Lance Dunbar (knee) were in pads on the side for their rehabilitation work Monday, August 15.
Lamar Miller, HOU: Miller (ankle injury) did not participate in practice Sunday, August 7 - Miller did not participate because he received a day off, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. The ankle injury appears to be a minor concern as of August 10. All reports out of Houston in mid-August have been very positive about Miller - he is said to look like he's 'shot out of a cannon' when accelerating. The ankle appears to be a non-issue.
Adrian Peterson, MIN: Peterson tweaked his hamstring early in training camp (August 1), but participated in practice Wednesday, August 3, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. Peterson is rarely involved in the preseason games so it is not unusual to note his absence - the hamstring seems to be a non-issue as of mid-August.
C.J. Prosise, SEA: Prosise missed 'most' of the offseason program with an unspecified hip issue, according to head coach Pete Carroll on June 28. 'We are really excited about it, but we are going to need to have to have a really good camp for him.' Stay tuned to see if Prosise is able to practice with the team from the open of training camp. Prosise suffered a hamstring injury during the first week of camp and currently (as of August 9) the team is aiming for him to play in the second preseason game - Prosise has a chance to play in the second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings next week, according to head coach Pete Carroll. However, Prosise (hamstring) has missed the first two weeks of training camp and Curtis Crabtree of 950 AM KJR considers him to be on the bubble as of August 16, due to his bevy of injuries, behind RBs Thomas Rawls, Christine Michael and Alex Collins, who are considered locks for the roster according to Crabtree. Prosise (hamstring) is expected to see some playing time Thursday, August 25, against the Dallas Cowboys if he continues to progress, according to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell's comments on Tuesday, August 23.
Thomas Rawls, SEA: On July 10, Rawls made a series of claims to ESPN about his rehab from last years' season-ending ankle injury: 'Running, cutting, working hard, getting back out there. I'm looking forward to being out there the first week (of training camp). Rehab has been going phenomenal this whole offseason.' Rawls answered 'most definitely' when asked whether he'll be ready for training camp. Head coach Pete Carroll had previously (June 16) stated that he 'absolutely' expected Rawls to play in Week One of regular season. It appears that Rawls is on track to practice in training camp - stay tuned to see if his declarations actually play out when the Seahawks open their training camp. On July 28, news from Seattle indicated that Rawls would not participate in practices on the first day of training camp July 30, but that the team hadn't decided whether to place him on active/PUP to open up camp. Rawls has come off PUP (August 7), but according to head coach Pete Carroll on August 9, Rawls won't be 'rushed back' to practices. It is still unclear if Rawls will play in the preseason. Rawls participated in team drills Monday, August 15, for the first time all offseason. We'll see how his ankle holds up to the stresses of full practices. Reports on Wednesday, August 17 indicated that 'Rawls (knee) has been performing well during practice and may be able to play in the team's third preseason game.' Rawls will not play in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, August 25, but has looked good during training camp. Coach Carroll indicated on Wednesday August 24 that the team expects Rawls to be ready for regular season Week One.
Trent Richardson, Ex-BAL: Richardson was due to have arthroscopic knee surgery as of mid-June. He may miss all of training camp and the time off likely will prevent Richardson from playing for the Ravens. On July 23, he was placed on the active/PUP list to start off training camp. Richardson has since been cut by the Ravens.
Stevan Ridley, Ex-DET: Ridley (undisclosed injury) missed most of the Lions' offseason program. Following a 2014 ACL tear, Ridley struggled to regain full health with the Jets last season and had just 36 carries during 2015. He may be on the roster bubble due to his inability to practice with his new team. He was released by the Lions Thursday, August 25.
Khiry Robinson, NYJ: Robinson was placed on the active/PUP list Wednesday, July 27 - he is still recovering from the broken leg he suffered in November, 2015. He was activated off the PUP on August 8. Reports on Sunday, August 13 indicated that Robinson is expected to have more practice reps during the upcoming runup to the second preseason game. Robinson (leg) participated in team drills on a limited basis Monday, Aug.ust 22.
Wendell Smallwood, PHI: Smallwood (quadriceps injury) did not practice Friday, August 5. Reports on August 9 indicated that Smallwood (quadriceps) will miss the first preseason game Thursday, August 11, due to the injury. Smallwood (quadriceps) participated in practice Saturday, August 13. According to reports on August 24, Smallwood is expected to see a lot of action in the third preseason game to make up for the time he missed away due to the quadriceps injury.
C.J. Spiller, NO: Spiller said on June 11, 2016 that the knee surgery he had last August 'played a big role' in his disappointing 2015 season. 'I didn't have that explosion that I'm known for,' Spiller said. 'But the good thing is, it's behind me now. The road to recovery is looking very bright.' The early word out of New Orleans is that Spiller is third on the depth chart behind Mark Ingram and Tim Hightower. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported on July 26 that Spiller may be on the roster bubble in New Orleans. He was listed as the third-string running back on the first unofficial depth chart (August 4).
Zac Stacy, Ex-NYJ: Stacy was waived on July 27 due to a failed physical (he broke his ankle in mid-November, 2015, and is still recovering).
Jonathan Stewart, CAR: Stewart was still feeling pain in his left foot as of June 7, according to the Charlotte Observer. Stewart missed the final three regular-season games due to a sprained left foot and then reinjured the foot in the Super Bowl. 'That foot just kind of lingered after he got bent over backwards in the Super Bowl,' coach Ron Rivera said. 'We're really trying to be smart with that and I wouldn't say it's 100 percent, but it's almost there.' On August 4, Stewart (foot) said he feels 100 percent healthy. He played in the second preseason game at Tennessee, posting 3/10/0 rushing and 1/6/0 receiving.
Lorenzo Taliaferro, BAL: Taliaferro opened training camp on the active/PUP list due to a lingering foot injury. He was previously expected to be ready for the start of camp, but the foot hasn't responded as hoped to rehab as of late July.
Chris Thompson, WAS: Thompson (undisclosed injury) is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Friday, August 26, according to head coach Jay Gruden on Wednesday, August 24.
Terron Ward, ATL: Ward (ankle) suffered an ankle injury during practice Monday, August 8, and was wearing a walking boot after practice. Head coach Dan Quinn said he does not think the injury is serious. However, Ward missed the week of practices beginning August 15 due to the injury. Ward will not play in the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins Thursday, August 25 due to his ongoing ankle injury woes.
Charcandrick West, KC: West (elbow) is considered day-to-day as of August 15 because of an elbow injury. West (elbow) was back at practice Wednesday, August 24.
Danny Woodhead, SD: Woodhead suffered an ankle injury of unspecified severity during minicamp, but will be ready for training camp according to the San Diego Union-Tribune on June 30. On July 25, Woodhead said he's as healthy as he's been in a long time. Woodhead had a cameo appearance (1/9/0 rushing) in the first preseason game at Tennessee, and also played in the second exhibition contest.
Zach Zenner, DET: On June 30, 2016 Zenner said he is '100 percent' recovered from the chest injury which sent him to IR last season. Zenner suffered multiple broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung during Week Six of the 2015 season. He was cleared to return to football activities in January, 2016 and was a full participant in the offseason program. Reports on the eve of training camp have Zenner as the favorite for short-yardage/goal-line back duties. Zenner led the team in rushing at Pittsburgh during the first preseason game (7/24/0 rushing). Zenner is said to be likely to make the 53-man roster as of August 24 - he is past the chest injury from last year.
Wide Receivers
Keenan Allen, SD: Allen suffered a kidney laceration during the 2015 that truncated his season. However, he is well outside the envelope for a full recovery from the severe injury, and he is a cornerstone for the San Diego offense as they scramble towards the opening of training camp. On June 10 he signed a four-year extension with San Diego guaranteeing him $20 million - he must be healthy to get that kind of money. Allen returned to practice Monday, August 8, after missing two days of practice with a strained foot and 'whipped' several defenders, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Tom Krasovic. Allen appears fully recovered entering the second week of preseason games. He hauled in both of his targets during the game on Friday, August 19 for 2/41/0 receiving.
Danny Amendola, NE: Amendola had his left knee and ankle operated on during the offseason, according to reports on May 16, 2016. Amendola is set for regular season now, though, as he was reported to feel 'really good' as of June 28 - Amendola may sit out the bulk of preseason but appears to be on track to play in regular season games. Amendola was placed on active/PUP to open training camp on July 25 - an expected move as he continues his rehab/recovery. Amendola (ankle, knee) appears to be moving well despite remaining on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He did warm up with teammates in practice Monday, August 22, but he was not in full pads.
Kelvin Benjamin, CAR: Benjamin tore his ACL during training camp last preseason, and was limited to individual drills at the June minicamp. However, he is expected to be ready to return to practices when training camp opens. He is on track to resume his position as the lead wide receiver for the Panthers. Benjamin avoided the PUP list to open training camp, and will participate from the word go, an encouraging sign for his recovery. Head coach Ron Rivera stated on July 28: 'Kelvin's retention as far what we're doing, he handled that really well by the way he ran the routes and attacked the football. There will be a lot of good things for us to see on tape.' Early reports out of training camp have been positive on Benjamin - he seems to be in top form entering the first week of preseason games. However, on August 13 Panthers' coach Rivera said that Benjamin has struggled with conditioning during camp - he's been getting winded after long runs, for example. Recent reports (August 22) have Devin Funchess pushing Benjamin for the #1 wideout job in Carolina: 'To be honest with you, where Devin is right now and where Kelvin needs to get to, I think Devin is pushing Kelvin,' receivers' coach Ricky Proehl said. 'He's realizing, 'I've got to get back, I've got to push, because [Funchess] is pretty dang good.' Proehl did admit that Benjamin is still fully recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Corey Brown, CAR: Corey Brown underwent offseason shoulder surgery at an unspecifi date - he missed two games in November 2015 due to a shoulder issue so this procedure was likely done to address that injury. Brown is expected to be ready to go in training camp. On July 28 Brown stated he was up to 200 pounds - he's bulked up over the offseason, and should be a reserve receiver for the Panthers to start regular season. Brown played in the first preseason game and had 1/4/0 rushing to his credit. However, Brown (shoulder) left practice early Tuesday, August 23, with a shoulder injury. His removal from practice simply appeared to be a precaution. according to observers.
John Brown, ARI: Brown entered the concussion protocols on August 1, 2016. He will not play in the Cardinals' first preseason game Friday, August 12, against the Oakland Raiders even if he is cleared to do so (as of August 10 he is not cleared). As of August 16, Brown (concussion) still has not cleared the concussion protocol. The Cardinals remain concerned and are being cautious with Brown, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Brown was cleared to practice on Sunday, August 21 but Brown (concussion) did not participate in practice Wednesday, August 24, because he was dealing with a headache.
Vincent Brown, NO: Brown was sent to IR on July 27 due to a calf injury. His season is over.
Dez Bryant, DAL: Bryant addressed his struggles during 2015 in an interview on July 7, 2016, stating that he felt his issues were both mental and physical - he also stated that he 'feels good' now. The nagging foot injury and ankle injury that dogged his 2016 campaign, ultimately ending it prematurely after he missed most of the first half, caused him to 'not trust' his surgically repaired foot and put him 'off his game'. Bryant is expected to be ready for the start of training camp this season - he did have another surgery on his foot this past January and has been rehabbing from the second foot surgery this offseason. Bryant has been cleared to participate in football activities, but he was limited during OTAs and minicamp. Bryant wasn't expected to play in the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams Saturday, August 13, but he played most of the first quarter and posted two grabs for 28 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown from rookie QB Dak Pres/cott. He is moving in the right direction on the eve of the second preseason game. However, Bryant suffered a concussion in practice on Monday, August 22, and as of Wednesday, August 24 the Cowboys have stated that he is not going to travel with the team to the third preseason game. A concussion is a new concern for Bryant, but given the league's sensitivity over that particular injury, pay attention to how quickly Bryant is able to get clearance to return to the field. Once a concussion is suffered, future incidences of concussion increase the severity of the injury (and the amount of downtime).
Randall Cobb, GB: Cobb (calf injury of unspecified severity) did not participate in practice Wednesday, August 10. It is not clear if he'll play in the first preseason game. Cobb (calf) did participate in practice Sunday, August 14, after missing the first preseason game Friday, August 12. Cobb didn't catch a pass in the second preseason game.
Corey Coleman, CLE: Coleman (hamstring injury) is not participating in practice Wednesday, August 10 and will be missing his fourth straight practice. He is not expected to play in the first preseason game. Coleman (hamstring) was back for 11-on-11 team drills Monday, August 15. Coleman (hamstring) said on August 24 he is over his hamstring injury and will be ready to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, August 26.
Jamison Crowder, WAS: Crowder (hamstring) recently (as of August 8) suffered a hamstring injury and has missed the last few practices in Washington as a result. Reports on August 9 indicated that Crowder is day to day with the hamstring injury, and he will sit out Thursday's preseason opener on August 11. Crowder (hamstring) returned fully to practice Saturday, August 13. However, he has since developed a knee injury and Crowder is ruled out for the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Friday, August 26.
Victor Cruz, NYG: Cruz suffered multiple setbacks in his recovery from a 2014 knee injury (patellar tendon tear) during 2015, and never was on the field for the Giants due to calf and knee woes. He did practice on June 14, 2016 and may have a backup role with the team during 2016 - but he'll have to stay healthy during training camp to accomplish a return to the field. On July 28, the team indicated that Cruz would be on the active roster when training camp opened on July 29, but that he'd start out 'limited' during early sessions. As of August 10, Cruz was out of practice again Wednesday. The team hasn't expressed concern about this latest injury (a groin problem) just yet. As of August 15, Cruz (groin) may return to practice in some capacity Wednesday, August 17, according to head coach Ben McAdoo. However, Cruz did not practice Wednesday, August 17, but was able to do more work on the sidelines, according to coach McAdoo. Cruz did not play Saturday, August 20, against the Buffalo Bills. He will continue working with a trainer Sunday, August 21, and plans to practice Monday, August 22 in hopes of playing against the New York Jets next week.
Josh Doctson, WAS: Doctson missed most of OTAs and all of minicamp, but the Redskins aren’t concerned about him falling behind. 'Doctson will be fine,' WRs coach Ike Hilliard said on June 16. 'I’m not worried about him.' Doctson is expected back in the lineup for training camp/preseason. However, on July 28 we learned that Doctson has an Achilles injury that has lingered since May, and that he is not practicing at the start of training camp - Doctson opened camp on the active/PUP list. Doctson will be shut down until he is '100% healthy,' according to head coach Jay Gruden. Gruden noted the team was not satisfied with how Doctson's Achilles' was progressing. Doctson (Achilles') was wearing a boot Wednesday, August 3, but he hasn't suffered any further setbacks. As of August 17, Doctson (Achilles') still does not have a timetable for his return, but head coach Jay Gruden said Doctson will not be rushed back. On August 23, local reports indicated that Doctson (Achilles') could take the field as early as the Redskins' final preseason game. Head coach Jay Gruden said the 'total expectation' is for Doctson to be good to go by Week 1, although he is not at 100% health yet. Gruden does believe that Doctson is in a good place from a mental standpoint. Doctson was ruled out of the Friday, August 26 preseason game as of August 24.
Julian Edelman, NE: Edelman suffered a foot injury during mid-November 2015 (a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot) and the injury required an additional surgery on it in early May, 2016. Reports on June 2 indicated that Edelman should be ready to practice as soon as training camps open. However, on July 25 Edelman was placed on active/PUP - it is unclear when he'll be able to take the field during preseason. Edelman did return to practices, but then on August 9 he suffered a tweak to his foot injury that knocked him out of practices. The tweak turned out to be minor and Edelman returned to practices on August 10. Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reported on August 16 that Edelman (foot) looked quick in his first full 11-on-11 day Tuesday. He sported an impressive double move to win a one-on-one drill. He didn't record a catch in the second preseason game.
Bruce Ellington, SF: Ellington (finger) suffered a 'jammed' finger during practice Thursday, August 4, and had the middle and index fingers on his right hand taped together Friday, August 5. On August 14, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco said Ellington is the 49ers' 'most improved player' so far in training camp. However, Ellington suffered an ankle injury prior to the second preseason game and missed several sessions. He returned to practices on Monday, August 22.
Quincy Enunwa: Enunwa suffered a head injury during the preseason game against the Washington Redskins Friday, August 19, and did not return to action. He's in the concussion protocols, and he hasn't practiced since the injury (as of August 24).
Larry Fitzgerald, ARI: Fitzgerald (knee) said on Wednesday, August 24 that he could be taking part in practice but does not want to suffer a setback this close to the start of the season. He suffered a minor MCL sprain in practice prior to the second preseason game.
Corey Fuller, DET: Fuller had surgery to correct a foot injury on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. He does not have a timetable to return to the field as of mid-July - his participation in training camp may be impaired if the rehab of this surgery doesn't go well. As of July 24, Fuller was placed on active/PUP to begin training camp.
Marquise Goodwin, BUF: Goodwin said on July 4, 2016 that he is "banged up" following his attempt to qualify for the Rio Olympics. 'I'm going to rest first,' Goodwin said of his plans. 'I haven't had any rest in a long time, so my body is banged up — I feel like I played eight or nine games and I'm in week 10 already.' Goodwin is said to have tweaked his hamstring during the Olympic trials, an injury that requires rest to recover from - we'll see if the problem lingers into training camp. Reports out of training camp have indicated that Goodwin is playing well entering the first full week of preseason games.
Josh Gordon, CLE: Gordon is reinstated to the NFL assuming he clears his four-game suspension to open the season with no new chemical abuse issues. However, on July 26 he was placed on the NFI list due to a quad strain he suffered earlier in the summer - he will be missing the opening practices of the Browns' 2016 training camp as a result. Reports on August 8 indicated that Gordon (quadriceps) will hopefully return to practice soon, according to head coach Hue Jackson, but Jackson said Gordon would be the first to say he needs to lose some weight. Gordon was limited to individual drills during practice Monday, August 15. Head coach Hue Jackson said Gordon likely will not play in the second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, August 18. Gordon will play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, August 26, according to head coach Hue Jackson on Wednesday, August 24.
Andrew Hawkins, CLE: Hawkins (hamstring injury) is not participating in practice Wednesday, August 10 and will be missing his seventh straight practice due to the hamstring injury dating to last week. Hawkins did not play in the preseason game on August 12. Hawkins (hamstring) returned to practice Sunday, August 21.
Devin Hester, Ex-ATL: Hester said on June 1 that he is about 75% healthy (two broken bones in his right big toe - Hester had a surgical repair in January, 2016) - he was not cleared to run as of May 2 and there is concern that he might miss some/all of training camp due to this ongoing injury/rehab. The injury has been stubbornly resisting rehab this past spring. Head coach Dan Quinn said on May 14: "He's able to do certain things, but he can't do it all. I don’t know that I have a timeline, but we're hopeful it's prior to camp." Hester was released by the Falcons on July 26.
Stephen Hill, CAR: Hill suffered a torn ACL in training camp last summer - but prior to the injury he was pushing for playing time, according to Carolina's wide receivers' coach Ricky Proehl: ' he was ready to make me famous as a coach...Unbelievable. That's how well he was performing in camp last year.' Hill was limited in the spring OTAs as he continues his rehab from the ACL injury - he is expected to be ready for training camp. Hill has been in and out of practices during training camp due to continuing issues from the knee surgery performed last year.
T.Y. Hilton, IND: Hilton (hamstring) continues to be bothered by a sore hamstring, which he suffered in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills, according to head coach Chuck Pagano on Sunday, August 21.
Allen Hurns, JAX: Hurns had thigh/sports hernia surgery in late January 2016. He has since recovered nicely, and the Jaguars signed him to a four year, $40 million extension in early June - presumably they wouldn't have awarded him that much money unless they agreed that he was fully healthy. On July 22 reports out of Jacksonville indicated that Hurns would play in the slot as well as outside during the upcoming season. Hurns (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, August 17, because of a knee injury. Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said after the session that Hurns will practice on Thursday after receiving the day off. He did return to practices on Thursday, August 18. Hurns managed two receptions for 29 yards with a touchdown on three targets in the preseason game Saturday, August 20, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jeff Janis, GB: Janis was told he'll be sidelined four to six weeks as of August 15 following surgery to put screws in the bones around his injured index finger
Stevie Johnson, SD: Johnson underwent surgery on his torn meniscus (knee) Tuesday, Aug. 9, according to a source. The surgery went well but there is currently no timetable for his return. On August 10 the team revealed that Johnson is out for the season. Johnson (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, August 15.
Julio Jones, ATL: Jones was pulled out of the closing portion of the first training-camp practice on July 28 because of an unspecified 'tweak,' according to coach Dan Quinn. 'We just held him out. He had a little tweak, so we decided to hold him out. He'll likely be back tomorrow. He could have come back in today and was asking me to. But I decided not.' Jones returned to practices on Tuesday, August 2. He played briefly in the preseason opener, but Matt Ryan had a miserable day and didn't connect with Jones. The first team offense did much better in the second preseason game, and Jones posted 1/20/0 on one target.
Brandon LaFell (hand injury) is still expected to be ready by Week 1 despite a torn ligament in his hand, according to head coach Marvin Lewis on August 16. It appears LaFell will try to play through the injury. LaFell participated in practice Sunday, August 21. He caught balls during warmups.
Marqise Lee, JAX: Lee (hamstring) participated fully in practice Monday, August 8, and looked good doing it, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Lee said he was rusty but it felt good to be back. It's still unclear if Lee will play in the Jaguars' first preseason game Thursday, August 11, against the New York Jets, but he said he'd like to play. Lee did play and coach Bradley stated after the game 'It was really good to see. He appeared to play really fast and made a play there, a couple plays. His speed, like we said, we've just got to continue now with him.' Lee caught 1-of-2 targets for eight yards on August 20 against the Bucs.
Jeremy Maclin, KC: Maclin (groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, August 17, because of a groin injury. He is considered day-to-day with this problem - stay tuned to see when he gets back in the mix. Maclin is expected to miss the second preseason game due to this injury. Stay tuned to see if he plays in the third preseason game.
Jordan Matthews, PHI: Matthews is expected to miss two to four weeks because of a bone bruise in his knee, according to sources in Philadelphia on August 8. As of August 24, Matthews is still out of practices, but he is expected to be ready for Week One of the regular season.
Malcolm Mitchell, NE: Mitchell (dislocated left elbow) returned to practice in full pads Monday, August 15. The injury was initially feared to be serious, but he bounced back from the pain quickly.
Donte Moncrief, IND: Moncrief had surgery to correct a nagging turf toe in mid-March, 2016, and wore a protective boot around during OTAs/preseason. The team hopes that Moncrief will be available for training camp. As of July 26 Moncrief was active for the start of training camp - good news regarding his recovery from the March toe surgery. On July 31 Moncrief (toe) said his surgically repaired toe is 96% to 97% healthy. A local report on August 18 indicated that Moncrief may lead the team in receptions - he's been impressive in training camp.
Jordy Nelson, GB: Nelson lost the 2015 season to a torn right ACL suffered last August. His rehab from reconstructive knee surgery has gone well, though, and as of early June OTAs Nelson declared himself game ready. He is expected to be ready to participate in training camp and regular season is not in doubt as of mid-July. However, as of July 26 Nelson was placed on the active/PUP list due to a 'tweak' to his left knee (not the right knee) - later reports indicated that the problem is knee tendinitis. As of the end of July it is unclear when Nelson will return to practices. Nelson (knee) might return from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list in the near future, QB Aaron Rodgers said Sunday, August 7 but as of August 10 Nelson has yet to return. Nelson was cleared from PUP on August 17, and can start participating in practices going forwards. He will be held out of the second preseason game on August 18, though, so don't look for him in that contest, or worry because he's not playing. Nelson worked with QB Aaron Rodgers in practice Tuesday, August 23, but Nelson was once again held out of competitive, 11-on-11 periods. He might not play in any preseason games, and he and Rodgers might only have a handful of practices together before the Week One opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Rodgers believes it will be enough. 'Because I know exactly where he's going to be,' Rodgers said. 'That's the beauty of us playing together for a long time.'
DeVante Parker, MIA: Parker is said to enter the 2016 season 100% healthy after missing parts of OTAs due to an undisclosed reason. The team has insisted his feet (a problem for Parker the last two years) were not part of the problem during spring workouts. On July 7, the Dolphins indicated that Parker is 100% healthy entering training camp. However, he suffered a hamstring injury early in training camp - Parker eventually returned to practice Tuesday, August 9. He posted 2/16/0 receiving vs. the Cowboys on August 19.
Breshad Perriman, BAL: Perriman suffered a partial tear of his ACL during OTAs - he was determined to not require a knee reconstruction by Dr. James Andrews, who performed an arthroscopic procedure on the knee June 13 to evaluate the severity of the injury. Perriman received a stem-cell injection to help speed the healing of his knee - the latest news on Perriman came on June 14 when Ravens' coach John Harbaugh said he expects Perriman to return at 'some point in (training) camp', and to be ready for Week 1. On July 25 Perriman was placed on active/PUP to open training camp - he'll continue his rehab/recovery during preseason. As of August 16 Perriman still hasn't returned from a nagging knee injury, and head coach John Harbaugh still has no update on the second-year receiver. Harbaugh has previously said that Perriman should be ready for Week 1, but he still hasn't been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Perriman was removed from the PUP on Monday, August 22 and participated in individual drills Tuesday, August 23, which was expected.
Terrelle Pryor, CLE: Pryor (calf injury) should be able to play in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, August 12, according to reports on August 10. Pryor caught 2/3 for 57 yards receiving during Cleveland's preseason opener. Pryor hauled in a long TD against the Falcons in the second preseason game - the calf injury appears to be a thing of the past.
Rueben Randle, PHI: Randle (gallbladder surgery May 23, 2016) was cleared for limited work on June 7. Randle sat out OTAs after having his gallbladder removed late in May. He was limited in minicamp, but Randle should be at full-go for training camp. As of July 29 Randle was working with the Eagles' second-team offense during training camp practices. Reports in mid-August describe Randle as 'disappointing' an 'embarrassing' during training camp/preseason - he sounds like he's on the way out of Philadelphia as of August 18.
Eric Rogers, SF: Rogers (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice Thursday, August 4. He is out for the season.
Eddie Royal, CHI: Royal is in the concussion protocols as of August 1 - as of August 5 head coach John Fox said that Royal was 'improving'. He was still not practicing as of August 13 and hasn't been cleared to leave the concussion protocols. Royal (concussion) participated in individual drills Saturday, August 20, for the first time since sustaining a concussion August 1. 'He's progressing,' head coach John Fox said. 'He's not been cleared for total contact, but he's getting back in the thick of it.'
Sterling Shepard, NYG: Shepard (groin) was limited in practice Sunday, August 14, because of a groin injury. He was also limited on Monday, August 15. He played in the second preseason game but didn't reel in a reception.
DeAndre Smelter, SF: Smelter (knee) said on July 14 that he 'feels great.' A fourth-round pick last year, Smelter spent his rookie season on the sidelines rehabbing a torn ACL. A 'nagging' injury kept him from participating in full for the entire offseason program, but he should be good to go for the start of training camp. Smelter has been practicing during camp. However, Smelter suffered a hamstring injury and started missing practices on Monday, August 22. He is not expected to play in the third preseason game on Friday, August 26.
Devin Smith, NYJ: Smith tore his right ACL on December 13, 2015 - as of July 23, 2016 he is expected to start the season on reserve/PUP - he'll miss at least the first six weeks of the season - players on reserve/PUP cannot practice with the team until after Week Six. Teams then have six weeks to evaluate the player before moving to the active roster or to season-ending injured reserve.
Steve Smith, BAL: Smith is rehabbing a torn Achille's tendon - as of June 16 he is expected to miss the entire preseason while continuing to rehab his Achilles tendon. On July 25 Smith was placed on active/PUP - an expected move that surprised nobody. On July 29 we learned that Smith's Achilles was torn in two places (the tendon was compared to raw, shredded chicken) and that Smith considered retiring during the early portion of the painful rehab of this injury. Smith was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, August 17, and likely will participate in practice Monday, August 22. He is being held out of the third preseason game for precautionary reasons.
Golden Tate, DET: Tate (undisclosed) did not practice Saturday, August 20. He wouldn't mention the specifics of his injury, but he talked about playing in the preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens Saturday, August 27. Tate (undisclosed injury) returned to practice Tuesday, August 23. The extent of his participation was not disclosed, however.
Bryce Treggs, SF: Treggs started missing practices on Monday, August 22 due to a knee injury. He is not expected to play in the third preseason game on Friday, August 26.
Mike Wallace, BAL: Wallace failed a conditioning test on July 28, and was sent to the NFI list. He'll retake the test on July 29 - this seems to be a minor conditioning issue as of late July. Wallace passed the conditioning test on July 29 and has joined team practices. He has enjoyed positive reports out of training camp - on August 17 Joe Flacco stated 'I think he is going to be a really big hit for us. We all know he can run. But just the way he runs his routes and how good is he at the top of it and coming back to you, and how sure his hands have been. I don't know if I've seen him drop a pass.'
Sammy Watkins, BUF: - Watkins suffered a stress fracture in his foot during April, and underwent a surgical repair - 'Nobody knows what timetable, what or when I’ll be back,' Watkins said on June 1, also admitting he doesn't know 'how or when' the stress fractures happened. The team hopes that Watkins will be ready for regular season, but nothing is certain at this stage of Watkins' recovery. Reports on June 20 indicated that Watkins was staying in Buffalo all summer to work with the team trainers as he attempts to recover from the foot injury/surgery. On July 29, Watkins was placed on the active/PUP list on opening day of training camp - but he is expected to progress off the PUP list fairly soon as Watkins is said to be close to 100% healthy as of late July. Watkins (foot) passed his physical Monday, August 8, an encouraging step on the way to returning to practices. Head coach Rex Ryan said Watkins (foot) is 'ready to go' as of August 11. However, he didn't play in the first preseason game. Watkins (foot) is good to go against the Washington team Friday, August 26. He won't play much, but head coach Rex Ryan believes he's ready as of Tuesday, August 23.
Markus Wheaton, PIT: Wheaton got back on the practice field Monday, August 15 after missing several practice sessions due to an undisclosed injury.
Kevin White, CHI: White participated in OTAs and mini-camp after missing all of last season due to his injured shin (stress fracture). However, the writers covering those activities indicated that White is struggling to get up to speed in the offense - his lost season of reps is showing in the early going this year. On July 29, after working with White in training camp sessions, QB Jay Cutler stated that '...he's going to be something special'. White showed well in the joint practices with the Patriots leading into the second preseason contest, according to reports on August 17. He's also garnered praise from Alshon Jeffery in the third week of August - White seems to be healthy now and gaining in confidence.
Marquess Wilson, CHI: Wilson broke his left foot on June 14 (it's the same foot he broke Week 13 during the 2015 season). Wilson had offseason surgery to repair the initial break - it looks like he'll miss training camp and will likely start the season on the PUP list. Wilson may not see the field until deep in the 2016 season, if then.
Kendall Wright, TEN: Wright (hamstring) was out of practice Friday, August 5. Reports on August 9 indicated that Wright will be sidelined a 'couple more weeks' after an MRI showed fluid in his injured hamstring. He is not traveling to the third preseason game, but head coach Mike Mularkey hopes that Wright will practice next Monday (August 29).
Tight Ends
Gary Barnidge, CLE: Barnidge had sugery on June 2, 2016 to correct a sports hernia. He avoided PUP to open camp and is active as of July 26, an encouraging sign regarding his recovery. On July 27 reports out of Cleveland indicated that Barnidge will be limited in the early sessions of training camp as he continues his rehab/recovery. Barnidge (hernia) is on track to play in Week 1 at the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Browns tight ends coach Greg Seamon on August 2. Barnidge's work ethic was praised by Seamon, who noted Cleveland has a plan to get the tight end ready for opening day. Barnidge caught a TD pass in the second preseason game vs. Atlanta and seems to be running just fine as we enter the third full week of exhibition games.
Derek Carrier, WAS: Carrier (knee) isn't expected to be ready for the start of training camp. Carrier tore his ACL and MCL in Week 14 last season and remains in question for the start of the 2016 season. He's a candidate to start the year on reserve/PUP. As of July 22 he's considered a reserve player for Washington, if and when he is able to take the field. Carrier (knee) is making progress in his recovery from torn ligaments in his knee but may start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Jay Gruden on August 24.
Jared Cook, GB: Cook had foot surgery early in June 2016 (the team called it a 'preventative' measure), and missed the rest of the Packers' OTAs and minicamp as a result. Packers' head coach Mike McCarthy said on June 6 that Cook's foot injury isn't a long-term issue. McCarthy said doctors feel good about his return, though no timetable had been established at that time. As of mid-July, Cook is expected to participate in training camp and is projected to be the team's starting tight end come Week One of regular season. On July 9, Cook stated that he was fully healthy. However, on July 25 he opened training camp on the active/PUP list - reports on July 27 indicated that Cook may sit out the first two weeks of training camp as he continues his rehab/recovery. Cook (foot) has been cleared and came off the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, August 9. He is said to have made several nice catches in practice on August 10. Reports on August 23 indicate that Cook has built a solid rapport with Aaron Rodgers since coming off the PUP on August 9.
Jeff Cumberland, SD: Cumberland (Achilles') was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, August 22 - his season is over. Sean McGrath appears to have a decent chance to make the 53-man roster because of the injury to Cumberland.
Ed Dickson, CAR: Dickson (groin) returned to practice Wednesday, August 24, after missing nearly two weeks with a groin injury.
Eric Ebron, DET: Ebron (ankle) has a 'pretty decent' right ankle sprain, according to a source. Lions head coach Jim Caldwell refused to address the injury when asked Monday, August 8. The right ankle sprain is better than what was feared to be an Achilles tendon injury, but Ebron will still miss significant time if this is a high ankle sprain (as is suspected but not confirmed). As of August 23, local reports indicated that Ebron (ankle) is expected to play in Week One of regular season, barring a setback. Ebron has an outside chance at playing in the final preseason game, but won't go in the third exhibition contest.
Tyler Eifert, CIN: Eifert had ankle surgery on May 25, 2016 and it is likely that he will miss several games as a result. On July 10 Cincinnati's director of player personnel Duke Tobin indicated that the team's young wide receivers would need to step up 'early in the year' while Eifert is out. As expected, on July 26 the Bengals placed Eifert (ankle surgery) on the active/PUP list. It remains to be seen when he will be cleared for football activities. He was running on the side of practice at sessions on August 4.
Gavin Escobar, DAL: Escobar is expected to be ready for the regular season, according to Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones on July 19. Escobar underwent surgery last December to repair a torn Achilles' tendon.
Crockett Gillmore, BAL: Gillmore had a shoulder (labrum) surgery in March. On June 4 he was cleared for individual workouts during OTAs, and he is expected to be ready to practice fully once training camp rolls around. As of July 29, Gillmore suffered a hamstring injury in Friday's training camp practice and will undergo an MRI to further diagnose this most recent injury. He didn't play in the first preseason game vs. Carolina.
Jimmy Graham, SEA: Speaking Thursday, May 26, 2016, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson said Graham is 'healing really fast,' and will be 'back sooner than people think.' On June 16 head coach Pete Carroll asserted that he 'absolutely' expected Graham back in the lineup come Week One of regular season, and even suggested that Graham was ahead of Thomas Rawls in his rehab. Stay tuned to see if/when Graham starts practicing with the team during training camp. On July 28, the Seahawks indicated that Graham would not practice on the first day of training camp, which is Saturday July 30. Graham was activated from the active/Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, August 10. It is not clear when he'll be ready for a full practice. Head coach Pete Carroll said on August 17 that the team is not sure if Graham will be ready for Week 1. 'Really we're shooting for: Where is he at the start of the season? And we'll evaluate then on how much longer it may take, or he may be ready. We don't know that yet. But he feels good,'. Graham (knee) was given the day off from practice Tuesday, August 23, after what offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said had been four straight days of good work.
Ladarius Green, PIT: Green was signed by Pittsburgh to a four-year, $20 million contract on March 9, while rehabbing his troublesome ankle after a January surgery to repair the issue in his joint. Green missed OTAs entirely but is expected to be on the field when training camp opens up late in July. However, on July 28 Green was placed on the active/PUP list - he's missing the early sessions of training camp. Reports on August 11 indicated that Green is dealing with persistent headaches, and that he may be forced to retire - though the team has not commented on the retirement speculations. Green has since denied the 'persisten headaches' report, but he's still on PUP as of August 24.
Rob Gronkowski, NE: Gronkowski left a practice session on Monday, August 15, but later reports indicated that he was suffering from cramps and hadn't suffered an injury. However, Gronkowski has missed practices since he left practice on the 15th. The reason for the absences is still undisclosed. Gronkowski did return to practices on Wednesday, August 24.
James Hanna, DAL: Hanna (knee) will undergo knee surgery and could miss the regular season opener it was announced on August 16.
Tyler Kroft, CIN: Kroft (knee) will miss four to six weeks due to a sprained knee as of August 4. However, he is expected to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.
Zach Miller, CHI: Miller is in the concussion protocols - as of August 5, head coach John Fox stated that Miller was 'improving'. Miller (concussion) returned to practice Saturday, August 13, for the first time since July 31. Miller was absent on Tuesday, August 16, and while head coach John Fox indicated Miller hadn't suffered a setback he did meet with team doctors. Miller (concussion) was once again in a red jersey, which signifies no contact, during practice on Tuesday, August 23, but is thought to be close to returning from the NFL's concussion protocol.
Tony Moeaki, CHI: Moeaki (undisclosed injury) sat out practice Tuesday, August 23.
Greg Olsen, CAR: Olsen (back) did not practice Monday, August 15, due to back spasms he suffered Sunday, August 14. Olsen (back) returned to practice Monday, August 22. The extent of Olsen's participation was not disclosed.
Brandon Pettigrew, DET: Pettigrew was placed on active/PUP due to his ongoing recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee, suffered December 13, (the third time he's had a torn ACL) - he may be back to camp in mid-August, according to reports on July 24.
Dennis Pitta, BAL: Pitta is attempting to return to the 53-man roster after missing two seasons of play due to a troublesome hip injury that required surgeries. On May 24, 2016 Coach John Harbaugh said Pitta (hip) 'looks like the same player we’ve seen in the past.' As of July 24, Pitta was cleared to participate in training camp activities. However, as of August 22 Pitta (finger) is sidelined due to a broken finger, and there is concern that he could need a screw inserted surgically if he returns before it heals.
Jordan Reed, WAS: As of June 14, Reed was sitting out minicamp after suffering an ankle injury the previous week. He is expected back in the lineup as training camp opens up. Washington signed Reed to a five year, $46.5 million contract ($22 million guaranteed) on June 14 - he should be healthy to command that amount of money. However, he is fighting through a thumb injury as of August 10 - Reed (thumb) will not be active Thursday, August 11, against the Atlanta Falcons, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Reports on August 16 indicated that Reed has loooked like a game-breaker at camp once he got back on the practice field.
Place Kickers
Matt Bryant, ATL: Bryant (undisclosed) will not kick again until Sunday, August 28, because of muscle tightness. PK Shayne Graham will be the kicker for the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins Thursday, August 25.
Travis Coons, CLE: Coons didn't participate in minicamp due to an undisclosed injury. We'll see if he can take the field in training camp/preseason. Check and see if he kicks in the first preseason game (or not). Patrick Murray handled the kicking duties in the first preseason game at Green Bay. Coons played in the second preseason game, missing an extra points kick vs. Atlanta.
Nick Novak, HOU: Novak (concussion) is in the NFL's concussion protocol as of August 21.
