We are just a couple of weeks away from the season opener, and the news from training camp is pouring in. In today's "Dynasty News," we will examine some of the week's larger happenings from a dynasty perspective.
Dynasty News: QB Justin Fields, New York Jets
The Jets have been scrambling – literally – for many years. Last season, Aaron Rodgers had the third-highest passing yards (3,897) total in franchise history. The team moved on from Rodgers and gave Justin Fields an unbelievable two-year, $40 million contract, with $30 million guaranteed. Fields has not had a great preseason in terms of passing. Sure, he is known for his rushing upside in dynasty circles, but this Jets offense has a likelihood of quickly becoming one-dimensional.
Last week, Fields addressed his lack of deep passes: "We're fine taking 8-yard completions every play, to be honest with you." He followed up, adding that he is always going to take what the defense gives him and is fine with throwing only shorter passes if it has to be, noting, "It's efficient and it's getting the defense tired." While this sounds great in theory, there must be a threat of a deeper pass, or there will be no running game. This quote also makes us leery about Garret Wilson's dynasty upside as long as Fields is under center. In deeper, SuperFlex leagues, we advise stashing Tyrod Taylor, as it will be difficult for Fields' body to hold up under a heavy rushing workload.
Dynasty News: QB Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts
Last week, Tom Pelissero broke the news that Indianapolis will start Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson Sr.
Coach Shane Steichen informed the quarterbacks this morning of his decision. Daniel Jones will start and Anthony Richardson Sr. — the No. 4 overall pick two years ago who has battled a string of injuries — will back him up. https://t.co/Grs3RcNm4G

Ace beat reporter, Zak Keefer, tweeted:
2 things that stood out to me re: the Colts' QB battle:

When I talked to Daniel Jones early in camp, he said Steichen told both of them the job would go to "who the coaches trust."
And Saturday, Steichen mentioned "running the operation" as one of the most decisive factors.
So, Richardson's injuries and inconsistency did him in. Fellow beat reporter Joel Erickson quoted coach Steichen:
Shane Steichen on Daniel Jones: "He's the starting quarterback for the season. I don't want to have a short leash on that."

The dynasty community still has doubts about whether or not Jones can hang on to the job long-term. But, his presence under center is great news for tailback Jonathan Taylor and the receiving corps. Taylor's numbers crashed with Richardson at the helm for two reasons: 1) Richardson's poor passing made the offense one-dimensional and 2) Richardson's rushing ability limited Taylor's rushing opportunities.
Pelissero tweeted why Jones chose signing with Indianapolis over returning to Minnesota, "Daniel Jones opted for a one-year, $14 million deal in Indianapolis over an offer from Minnesota, in large part because he wanted an opportunity to start. He gets it with the #Colts and just turned 28. Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson Sr. -- still only 23 -- gets the opportunity to sit."
It is difficult to believe that Jones is only five years older than Richardson. Salary cap expert, Nick Korte, tweeted, "This (Jones starting) is good news for the Vikings so far. If Daniel Jones plays enough snaps this season, they are more likely to get a 4th rounder instead of a 5th rounder in a compensatory pick for Daniel Jones going to Indy."
Fellow salary cap expert, Jason Fitzgerald of OvertheCap.com, added, "Daniel Jones will earn $100k for each Colts win. $1m tied to making the playoffs. Also, bonuses for winning playoff games. These are incentives on top of his $14m contract."
Many in the fantasy and dynasty communities see Richardson myopically. They see his fantasy relevance. But this is not what coaches see. Indianapolis quarterback coach Cam Turner told reporters that he tried everything he could to help Richardson, but the consistency wasn't where it needed to be. He said, "I feel like I've tried everything I can do, and I feel like he's given great effort in that aspect, too. I don't think, either way, it's one or the other. I just think right now, it's not where. The consistency's just not where we want it to be."
This is all we need to know. We expect Jones to start roughly half the games and be a starting option in Superflex leagues. Last year, Joe Flacco had some good fantasy games.
Dynasty News: QB Tyson Bagent, Chicago Bears
Last week, Ian Rapoport was the first to break the news of the Bears extending the contract for backup quarterback Tyler Bagent, "The #Bears are signing QB Tyson Bagent to a two-year, $10M contract extension with a max value of $16M with incentives, his reps at Milk and Honey Sports and Key Player Management tell The Insiders. Chicago Bears first had the deal, which ties Bagent to Chicago through 2027."
Tom Pelissero added, "Tyson Bagent is eligible for a new deal entering his third season because he was undrafted in 2023. Early extensions like this are rare, and so is the opportunity to develop under Ben Johnson, who now has one of the NFL's best backups locked up." No, Bagent is not a threat to Caleb Williams' stranglehold on the starting job. However, dynasty managers, especially those in deeper SuperFlex leagues, should see this contract extension as new coach Ben Johnson liking what he has seen in Bagent and he acknowledges the need for a solid backup quarterback. Bagent is the first quarterback since Jay Cutler to get a contract extension.
Dynasty News: RB Joe Mixon, Houston Texans
Aaron Wilson reported last week, "I believe he starts the season on the non-football injury (NFI) list." Wilson is as plugged in as any reporter when it comes to the Texans. If Mixon starts the season on the NFI list, he would miss at least the first few games of the season. Wilson added that it has been a "tough & complicated rehabbing" for Mixon. Nick Chubb is getting up to speed, and rookie Woody Marks is gaining confidence. With a porous offensive line and their top running back sidelined, this Houston offense will depend on C.J. Stroud to power the offense.
