Fantasy Football Impact for Kenneth Gainwell with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
What a difference a year makes. A year ago, Gainwell was an afterthought on the market, signing a one-year deal for $1.79 million with the Steelers. Gainwell broke out in 2025, joining Bijan Robinson, Christian McCaffrey, and Jahmyr Gibbs as the only players with 500+ rushing yards and 70+ receptions. As a reward, he returns to the Southeast after growing up in Mississippi and playing at the University of Memphis.
The Buccaneers' backfield is undergoing a makeover this offseason. Bucky Irving remains the centerpiece, coming off a disappointing second year with seven games missed to injury. Backups Rachaad White and Sean Tucker are both free agents who have been solid contributors in spurts as the Buccaneers have featured split backfields.
Initial reaction will view Gainwell's arrival off a strong year as an indictment of Irving. It is crucial to consider environmental shifts within the offense.
Zac Robinson, who served in the same role with the Falcons in 2025, is the new offensive coordinator, replacing Josh Grizzard. Robinson's offense infamously utilized two backs, with Tyler Allgeier playing to the chagrin of many fantasy managers. His scheme relied heavily on running backs in the passing game, with a 23% target share, ranking fourth in the NFL. The Buccaneers occupied a similar position under Liam Coen in Baker Mayfield's career-best 2024 season; their 21.5% share was also fourth. That fell to the bottom half of the league at 16.9%.
The Buccaneers are also facing the departure of longtime stalwart receiver Mike Evans. Young receivers Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan have experienced peaks and valleys during their careers. They have the upside to combine with Chris Godwin Jr. as the focal points.
Gainwell grants the freedom for a Plan B.
Both Irving and Gainwell are excellent receivers. Their presence allows the team to commit to backs as a key component of the passing attack. Returning to the highs of Gainwell's 2025 season is an aggressive projection for any player. Still, that performance has unlocked his capability, and he should be regularly schemed into the game plan. He will hold much more value in PPR formats, as Irving should still take the lead in the run game and around the goal line.
