Shocking performances force context.

Kansas City, San Francisco, and Minnesota entered Week 7 as the only unbeaten teams.

Minnesota is the sole survivor.

San Francisco's loss to Atlanta may be mildly surprising, but not shocking. The 49ers played Monday Night, then traveled for a body clock game with a 1 PM EST kickoff. Their mounting injuries have been well publicized; they lost Mike Evans at halftime of Week 6 after losing Deebo Samuel Sr. in Week 5. No receiver recorded a reception until Jordan Watkins in the middle of the third quarter. They built a quick lead but lost Christian McCaffrey for a stretch as the offense stalled, going 40 minutes without scoring.

Kansas City was shocking. The Chiefs also suffered receiver injuries, losing Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton in Week 4 against Las Vegas. A bye and a Homecoming game against the Chargers obscured the impact. All eyes were on the Revenge spot for Ken Walker III against a tough Seattle defense, but the Chiefs never got moving, with 135 yards of total offense until midway through the fourth quarter.

Walker seemed to answer every issue for a team that shocked many by missing the playoffs in 2025.

The Chiefs built their 5-0 start by beating Indianapolis, Miami, Las Vegas, and the Chargers, who are 6-20 combined. Walker will help win close games and keep the offense from stalling, as it did too often in 2025. Week 8 brings a matchup with Denver; the winner will move into pole position in the AFC West. The Chiefs face a difficult schedule post-Thanksgiving: at Buffalo, at the Rams, at Cincinnati, New England, and San Francisco.

Carolina delivered their own context-inducing surprise. One of the early-season feel-good stories, the Panthers were blown out 43-13 in their own building. Losses like that make you realize they've beaten Cooper Rush and Tanner McKee to get to 3-3.

Across the NFL, Week 7 delivered more surprises.

Miami picked up their first win, beating an equally bad Jets team. Houston showed a potential overseas hangover, stopping a two-game win streak despite being a touchdown favorite over the Giants. Baltimore beat Cincinnati 13-0 in the first half, while Cincinnati won 35-0 in the second.

The season's biggest surprise did the least surprising thing. The Browns have sprung upsets over Vegas favorites Tampa Bay, Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore. They were favored for the first time in 2026, against Tennessee. So naturally, they fell behind 14-0. But these Browns have channeled the 1980 Kardiac Kids all season. Week 7 was no different. In the best game of the early slate, they pulled ahead for the fourth time in the final two minutes.

Shock avoided. Until you see the AFC North standings.

With Halloween looming, the biggest shock would be no additional shocks.

National Tight Ends Day? More like National Overlooked Running Backs Day.

Eight running backs topped 100 rushing yards in Week 7, the most for any week in 2026. It ties the highest mark in any week in 2025 and is a significant bounce-back after Week 6 saw just two 100-yard games. As of now, 2026 is running just ahead of 2025, with 35 total 100-yard games compared to 34 at the same point in 2025.

Stats Of The Week

tag:reuters.com,2026:newsml_MT1USATODAY30187190:138827599

Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh: 540 Touchdown Passes

Rodgers broke a tie with Peyton Manning and now holds sole possession of third place in career touchdown passes. Tom Brady (649) and Drew Brees (571) are still comfortably ahead, and Rodgers stated before the season he would likely retire following 2026.

This is likely the final significant milestone we see Rodgers pass. He is fifth on the yardage list, 3,865 yards behind Brett Favre. Manning is 102 yards ahead of Favre.

Matthew Stafford, LA Rams: 155 Rams Touchdown Passes

Stafford passed Roman Gabriel to become the Rams' career touchdown passing leader. He is also the Lions' career touchdown-pass leader, making him the only player to hold franchise touchdown-passing records for two different teams. He is also the only player in NFL history with 150+ passing touchdowns for two different teams.

Stafford's 21,396 yards with the Rams are still fourth in team history. He needs 2,362 to catch record holder Jim Everett. Marc Bulger is second (22,814), and Gabriel is third (22,223). Stafford's 1,989 currently lead the NFL in 2026.

Travis Kelce, Kansas City: 1,104 Career Receptions, 15,423 Career Receiving Yards (including playoffs)

Kelce passed both Cris Carter and Marvin Harrison Jr., moving into fifth on the career receptions list. He is behind Jerry Rice (1,549), Larry Fitzgerald (1,432), Tony Gonzalez (1,325), and Jason Witten (1,228).

Kelce surpassed Gonzalez for the most tight end receiving yards in NFL history, combining regular-season and playoff production. Gonzalez leads in regular-season yardage (15,127 vs. 13,345), while Kelce laps him in playoff production (2,078 vs. 286). Kelce's playoff yards are the second most in NFL history, trailing Rice's 2,245.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle: 9 Receptions, 150 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving Touchdown

Another week, another Smith-Njigba 8+ reception, 120+ receiving yard game. He's hit those marks in 5 of 7 games in 2026 and 11 of 24 since the start of 2025. His 150 yards were a season high, bumping his 17-game pace to 2,106 yards.

Smith-Njigba leads the league with 867 receiving yards.

Trey McBride, Arizona: 10 Receptions, 111 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving Touchdown / 406 Career Receptions

McBride became the first tight end in NFL history to pass 400 career receptions in their first five seasons.

His 59 receptions lead the league. Smith-Njigba is one behind. McBride is currently on pace for 143 receptions, trending well ahead of his record-breaking 126 in 2025.

Malik Nabers, NY Giants: 7 Receptions, 111 Receiving Yards

Nabers had 96 yards over the first three games of 2026. He's topped 110 yards in each of the last four weeks, for 509 yards in that stretch.  His streak ties multiple players for the fifth-longest in NFL history. Calvin Johnson topped 110 in 8 straight weeks in 2012. A.J. Brown (2023) and Pat Studstill (1966) had 6-game streaks. Bob Boyd had a 5-game streak in 1954.

Nabers is the fifth player in Giants history to post 500+ yards over 4 games. The others: Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, Homer Jones, and Del Shofner.

Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco: 39 Rushing Yards, 1 Rushing Touchdown, 6 Receptions, 61 Receiving Yards

McCaffrey scored in his sixth straight game. It is the longest active streak and McCaffrey's second 6+ game streak. LaDainian Tomlinson holds the record at 18 games. Josh Jacobs ran a 10-game streak before it was broken in early 2025. Jacobs immediately started another streak that ran to 6 games. McCaffrey is the 20th player with multiple 6+ game streaks.

If McCaffrey can push the streak to 7 games, the list gets very interesting. Only six players have had multiple 7-game streaks: Jim Brown, Priest Holmes, Lawrence Johnson, John Riggins, Emmitt Smith, and Tomlinson.

McCaffrey has been quiet on fantasy radars because of a preseason fade and a surprising timeshare in a Week 1 Island Game. Excluding that Week 1 game, he is the RB2 overall in fantasy since Week 2.

In true "there can be a record about anything" fashion, McCaffrey recorded his 22nd career game with a rushing touchdown and 6+ receptions. That ties Marshall Faulk for the most in NFL history. Tomlinson is third, with 18.
