I love the idea of inflection points. Only 17 data points split into weekly segments lend themselves to milestone events.
Take the Week 5 Buffalo vs. New England game in 2025.
Buffalo entered 4-0. The established class of the AFC East, rolling off three double-digit wins after a 41-40 thriller against Baltimore.
New England was 2-2, coming off an 8-26 record between 2023 and 2024.
A Buffalo win would put them at a commanding 5-0 position in a division with no other winning record. We know that did not happen. Instead, New England pulled through with a 23-20 thriller. A loss could have been "here we go again." Instead, the win gave New England the confidence it needed for a Super Bowl run, going 16 -1 in the 17 games before losing to Seattle.
Week 6 is filled with potential inflection points:
The 3-2 Patriots can put the 2-3 Jets in a tough spot. A Jets win would put both teams at 3-3 and give the Jets confidence.
Baltimore (4-1) and Cleveland (3-2) have their own potential inflection point. Baltimore wins, the established order of the AFC North holds, and Cleveland's feel-good 3-1 start becomes a 3-3 afterthought.
Houston started 0-3 in 2025 before eventually making the playoffs. At 1-4, they face 4-1 Jacksonville. A Houston win gives them the first leg of the head-to-head tiebreaker in the AFC South and moves them two games back. A loss creates a four-game spread in the division race.
Chicago sits 3-2 and welcomes back Caleb Williams. They have little margin to keep pace in the tough NFC North. The NFC South isn't nearly as difficult, but Atlanta already lost to Carolina and sits one game back in the loss column. The Panthers are in their own inflection point matchup, facing a 2-3 Philadelphia that has been forced to pivot to Tanner McKee at quarterback.
Thursday Night can provide a window into the weekend ahead. Seattle lost a key divisional matchup with San Francisco in Week 5, then woke up Friday morning 3 games back. Denver is trying to keep pace with Kansas City, off to a 5-0 start; their win keeps them in the hunt.
Narratives continue to take shape through the season. Week 6 could tighten races as we near the midway point. Alternatively, teams could continue the recent trade momentum started by Arizona and Marvin Harrison Jr.
Revenge!
Do revenge games matter? For some players, absolutely. For others, it's a fun side story. Each week, we look at players who have something extra.
