Monday Injury Rounds: Week 14

NOTE: This column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red. 

Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.

Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.

Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.

Wednesday and Thursday Injury Expectations: Posted late Wednesday and Thursday evening. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.

Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.

I'll also be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release), our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube), and plan at least one weekly Periscope Q&A (shortly before Monday Night Football) with additional shows if/when possible. INJURY ROUNDS

Matthew Stafford | Right Hand Contusion | day-to-Day

Dak Prescott | Hand contusion | Day-to-Day

Television replays of the hand injuries suffered by Stafford and Prescott were striking. But, while the area on the back of the hand was swollen and painful, these injuries won't be a major concern. The back of the hand is one of the areas on the body notorious for swelling quickly and dramatically. If x-rays are negative and the player has enough grip strength to play his position, it's a "looks worse than it is" injury. That should prove to be the case with both Stafford and Prescott. Both reportedly have no bony injury and should be able to return to practice after early week treatment and rest.

Tyrod Taylor | left knee injury | Awaiting Information

Taylor was carted off the field after having his knee twisted or contacting the turf multiple times. There was not one single injury mechanism and no indication of a season-ending injury. Taylor would later tell reporters he didn't believe his injury was serious. Expect the Bills to send Taylor for an MRI on Monday. Headed into Week 14, the Bills have already tried to move on from Taylor once this year. It won't be a surprise to see Taylor miss at least one week, even if the injury is confirmed to be minor.

Delanie Walker | Ankle sprain | Day-to-Day

Walker had his ankle and foot twisted underneath him as he was taken to the ground after catching his touchdown pass. Walker was able to walk off the field. Though the mechanism suggests a high ankle sprain, Walker's foot was not stuck in the turf and the injury will hopefully be minor. Expect limited practice this week but Walker can tentatively be expected to play.

Others of Note: Thankfully, it was a quiet week for new injuries. C.J. Fiedorowicz suffered another concussion and will likely go to injured reserve. Multiple teams will be re-evaluating offensive line injuries on Monday. Mitch Morse, Kyle Long, Rick Wagner, and T.J. Lang are all at risk of missing time, as is Morgan Moses. Jimmy Smith will need surgery for a torn Achilles tendon.

FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS

Aaron Rodgers | Right clavicle fracture | Week-to-Week | Week 15 Return

The Packers designated Rodgers to return to practice last week. He continues to make progress in rehab and appears to have no limitations throwing. He'll begin doing individual work with his receivers and regaining timing and chemistry. The final hurdle for Rodgers will be clearance for contact. The medical staff will image his shoulder late this week or early next week. While it's too soon for Rodgers' clavicle to be fully healed, if the imaging shows good interval healing Rodgers will be cleared and play in Week 15. Right now, Rodgers' return seems probable.

Greg Olsen | Metatarsal fixation / soreness | Day-to-Day | Week 14+ Return

Olsen has reportedly been told he can return to play when comfortable. Soreness after surgery is expected and, despite three weeks of practice before his first game, it was impossible for Olsen to recreate game conditions in workouts before his return. Expect Olsen to return to practice this week and -- if there are no setbacks -- play in Week 14. The Panthers planned to limit Olsen's workload last week and are likely to do the same if he plays in Week 14.

***Monday Update: An article on Panthers.com provided some good insight on Olsen's current situation and progress.

“Obviously I suffered a bit of a sting last week on that turf and just thought it'd be better to not repeat that again this week,” said Olsen, who was inactive. “So three home games, back on grass, another week to get healthier. We just thought it was in our best interest long-term for the rest of the season.

“From the beginning when I had this injury, the doctors said the past people who had this, they tend to be a little tricky and they tend to come and go. So we're just continuing to progress. The second half of the week (I was) feeling much better. So hopefully after another good week next week, like I said, coming back, playing on some grass, get off this turf for a little while, hopefully, I'll be good to go.”

That's reassuring detail and a good indication Olsen should be able to return soon, even if it's in a limited role for now.

Jordan Reed | Hamstring strain | Week-to-Week

Reed has missed five games with a hamstring strain. He's not practiced since telling reporters he still had pain when decelerating two weeks ago. Washington will continue to evaluate Reed but have shown no interest in returning him to practice or games at less than full strength with this particular soft tissue injury. It's also fair to wonder whether Reed needs surgery on the toe injury that plagued him throughout the offseason. If that remains an issue and the hamstring strain isn't responding to rehab, we may see the team's medical staff shut him down for the season soon. This week's practice participation is critical for Reed's prospects.

Others of Note: There's been no new news on David Johnson, who is now three weeks removed from having his cast removed. I'm hoping for actionable updates on Robert Woods and Chris Hogan this week. Woods is likely closer to returning than Hogan. Adrian Peterson was unable to practice or play through a back injury and could miss more time. Kelvin Benjamin has a torn meniscus and has been out three weeks. It's fair to wonder why Benjamin didn't choose surgery -- he's already missed multiple weeks and minor meniscus trims often require only 3-4 weeks recovery time. Rishard Matthews and Amari Cooper have a chance to return in Week 14.
