The Dynasty Trading Post: Fixing Quarterback

Chad Parsons's The Dynasty Trading Post: Fixing Quarterback Chad Parsons Published 12/12/2023

Welcome to the dynasty trading post, where optimizing strategy, roster construction, format, and player value oscillations are examined weekly in example and completed dynasty trades.

This week, we will look at the quarterback market for contending teams who have lost (or have question marks at the position. C.J. Stroud is a good bet to miss Week 15 (and possibly more), and Justin Herbert has been declared out for the season. Geno Smith missed Week 14 and is to be determined for Week 15. Joshua Dobbs was benched last week. Here are potential answers through trading to supplement contending teams:

The range of cost in this group can range from a 2024 2nd (or equivalent) for Jake Browning down to a future 3rd (or less) for Tommy Devito or Mitch Trubisky. Browning is playing his way into a longer-term backup (at a minimum). Through 46 qualifying quarterbacks since 2010 in their first three starts (60+ passes, 3+ touchdowns, >60% completion rate thresholds), Browning ranks fourth in passer rating, first in completion rate, first in yards-per-attempt, and ninth in success rate. In short, Browning is having a rare outcome early in his starting opportunities. Even if merely one of the better backups in the NFL to Joe Burrow for the next season or two, a contending 2nd is appropriate for the profile and utility. Joe Flacco is the next preferred option, averaging 0.42 passing points per dropback, which is just below Browning of the above list (0.44) and ahead of options like Jared Goff, Jordan Love, Matthew Stafford, and Russell Wilson. Here are a few example trades from this subset:
