The Targets Report: Week 3

An aerial reality check, analyzing every team's target and snap share report, searching out the receivers who are, or who are becoming, true fantasy gold.

Week 2 saw a significant bounce-back in the passing game. Russell Wilson's 450 yards were the second-highest of his career, and Bryce Young set a career high with 55 attempts. As a result, there was movement in the target buckets. Where did the league shake out?

The Target Report

I view target trees as "clean" or "dirty." Clean trees distill targets to their top options and give standout fantasy performances. Dirty trees are, well, a mess and rely on unpredictable possibilities. The chart below splits these offenses into categories.

Offenses with Top 2 Options > 60% Target Share

Team Throws Player Targets Stat Line Target % Snaps Snap %
LA Rams 32 Davante Adams 13 6-106-1 40.63% 49 80%
Puka Nacua 9 8-91-0 28.13% 42 69%
Tyler Higbee 4 4-37-0 12.50% 46 75%
Philadelphia 21 A.J. Brown 8 5-27-0 38.10% 58 97%
DeVonta Smith 6 4-53-0 28.57% 45 75%
Saquon Barkley 2 2-6-0 9.52% 50 83%
Seattle 30 Jaxon Smith-Njigba 10 8-103-0 33.33% 42 65%
Cooper Kupp 9 7-90-0 30.00% 45 69%
Tory Horton 4 2-32-1 13.33% 26 40%

Week 1 saw eight teams in this category. Offenses spread the ball a bit more in Week 2, and in many games threw a higher volume. Four of the eight teams from Week 1 had 22 targets or fewer.

  • Pregame reports indicated the passing attack would lean towards Adams. They were correct. This usage tracked with some preseason stories. Adams has 21 targets on the season, while Nacua has 20. Ja'Marr Chase and Malik Nabers were the only players over 158 targets in 2024. Adams and Nacua are pacing for 178 and 170, respectively.

  • Brown had a 97% snap share and a 38% target share. Jalen Hurts threw for 101 yards. The Eagles won. They do not think it is as broken as we do in fantasy football.

  • Smith-Njigba's 227 yards are the second most by a Seahawks receiver through the first two games of a season, trailing Tyler Lockett's 278 from 2021. His 17 receptions are the most by a Seahawk to start the year. The Seahawks offense has been heavy on tight ends, with A.J. Barner topping 85% snap share both weeks and Elijah Arroyo, Eric Saubert, and Robbie Ouzts all seeing between 37% and 42% snaps.
