Free Agency Fallout: Challenging the Fantasy Football Consensus

Not every free agency move means what you think. Dave Kluge and Joey Wright break down Kenneth Walker, Rachaad White, Trey McBride, and other storylines that could reshape fantasy football rankings.

Dave Kluge's Free Agency Fallout: Challenging the Fantasy Football Consensus Dave Kluge Published 03/18/2026

Free agency moved fast this offseason, and with so many major transactions happening in a short window, several narratives have formed across the fantasy football community. Some of those takes make sense. Others may not hold up under closer inspection.

Joey Wright and I went through several of the biggest storylines from free agency and discussed where the consensus might be wrong, or at least overstated, and what it all could mean for fantasy football in 2026.

Check out the recent episode for deeper thoughts on all of these talking points.

Below is a breakdown of the key moves, the popular reactions, and why we're not fully buying into all of them.

Ken Walker III to Kansas City may not mean RB1 volume

The biggest move of free agency (for fantasy football purposes, at least) was Ken Walker III landing with the Chiefs. The immediate reaction was predictable: fantasy managers have wanted a feature back in Andy Reid's offense for years.

But history suggests we shouldn't assume Walker will suddenly become a true bell-cow.

Looking at the last few seasons in Kansas City, the lead running back has rarely dominated touches. The highest share of total running back touches under Andy Reid during that stretch was about 60%, and no back has topped 249 total touches in the past six seasons. Even that number doesn't account for Patrick Mahomes II taking carries away from the backfield.

Walker himself handled 252 touches last season in Seattle, already near the upper range of what Chiefs backs have seen. His postseason run and Super Bowl MVP performance created momentum for his value, but the workload he's stepping into may not be any larger than what he already had.

We're not fading Walker entirely. He can still be a strong RB2. But the idea that he automatically becomes a top-tier RB1 just because he joined Kansas City feels like wish-casting based on what the Chiefs offense used to be, not what it has been recently.

Chris Rodriguez Jr could be the safer play in Jacksonville

When Chris Rodriguez Jr. signed with Jacksonville, most of the fantasy reaction focused on the younger, more athletic option in the backfield, Bhayshul Tuten. But the efficiency numbers from last season tell a different story.

Rodriguez ranked near the top of the league in yards after contact, broken tackle rate, and success rate. Those numbers perfectly encapsulate who he is as a running back. He is a hard-nosed runner who keeps the offense on schedule and creates yards on his own.

There's also familiarity with Liam Coen, who coached Rodriguez at Kentucky and has spoken openly about how important he was to the offense. Jacksonville backed that up by giving Rodriguez a contract similar to other established rotational backs who signed this offseason: Kenneth Gainwell, Rico Dowdle, and Tyler Allgeier. Coen's history also suggests a shared backfield rather than a true workhorse. Even his most heavily used backs have stayed below a full bell-cow workload.

That opens the door for a split where Rodriguez handles early downs and goal-line work, LeQuint Allen Jr., a passing-down specialist, handles third downs, and Tuten ends up with fewer high-value touches than expected.

If that happens, Rodriguez could end up being the safer fantasy option despite the lower hype.

Javonte Williams might be the most overlooked RB situation

One of the quietest storylines of the offseason is Javonte Williams staying in Dallas, and it might be one of the best fantasy setups nobody is talking about.

He finished as RB12 last season, handled nearly all of the team's running back touches, and the Cowboys didn't add serious competition in free agency. They also lack a second-round pick, making it less likely they spend premium draft capital at the position.

Williams is still only 25 years old, has rebounded from his knee injury, and was top-five in red-zone touches while also finishing 11th in targets among running backs. He's getting volume, high-value touches, and playing in an offense that creates scoring opportunities. The late-season dip in efficiency isn't unusual for a back with a heavy workload. We see that every year from feature backs.

Right now, it looks like Dallas still views him as their lead back, and if that holds, he belongs firmly in the top-15 conversation among running backs.

Rachaad White could benefit from Washington's moves
