The season has enough sample size to draw conclusions about NFL offenses and player utilization. However, the fantasy season is barreling toward the business section of the calendar, where at least 2-3 teams in a league are looking toward 2027 already. Here are the key NFL and fantasy observations at the wide receiver position:

One exercise and threshold test to identify underrated and overrated wide receivers is comparing players to the historical average markers for baseline usage and efficiency. Here is what this level of wide receiver in fantasy averages since 2010:

Top 5 Wide Receivers

  • 38 routes per game
  • 2.53 yards per route run
  • 27% targets per route run

Top 12 Wide Receivers

  • 36 routes per game
  • 2.20 yards per route run
  • 24% targets per route run

Top 24 Wide Receivers

  • 35 routes per game
  • 2.00 yards per route run
  • 23% targets per route run

Abbreviations are RPG for routes per game, YPRR for yards per route run, and TPRR for targets per route run

Top 5 Qualifiers

  • Puka Nacua: Hopefully he can stay healthy, but Davante Adams' absence and the Rams' 2-4 record only fuel urgency to use/optimize Nacua for the rest of the season.
  • Chris Olave: Hits all the markers and is producing at an elite level. The lone wrinkle ahead is when/if Jordyn Tyson is in the lineup and if he softens Olave's upside/utilization.

Top 12 Qualifiers

  • CeeDee Lamb: Just missed at 36 RPG as the lone quibble from the apex top-five markers across the board. Lamb's 31% TPRR is monstrous, and he has been the WR1 over George Pickens easily this season.

Top 24 Qualifiers

  • Tetairoa McMillan: 40 RPG is elite, and the lone aspect for improvement is his 23% TPRR. The funnel with McMillan and Coker is there in Carolina.
  • Tee Higgins: Often undervalued as the second-best receiver in Cincinnati, Higgins has been even better than his career averages this year in YPRR (2.53) and TPRR (25%).
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown: Just missed on YPRR but firmly qualifies with 39 RPG and 28% TPRR. He has been rock solid, yet again, this season.
  • Matthew Golden: One of the breakout stars of the position this season, Golden's 27% TPRR is a standout figure with the Green Bay passing game running through Golden and Christian Watson.
  • Christian Watson: One of the best tandems in the NFL with Golden. Watson has a more impressive 2.61 YPRR but lower TPRR than his teammate.
  • Malik Nabers: 2.36 YPRR and 28% TPRR are high-end markers, with his 35 RPG holding him back somewhat. Durability is his watchword.
  • DeVonta Smith: Squint and see Smith as a top-five qualifier within reach this season. Tanner McKee may end up being good news for the Eagles' passing game weapons.
  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba: Low routes are the only thing keeping him from another record-breaking season.
