Below, you'll find quarterbacks grouped by bucket, along with the tier in which they currently reside in the Footballguys Dynasty Rankings for a little added fine-tuning.
We did our initial run of quarterback buckets in the first week of May.
For this second edition, I've used the comments to highlight players who have had recent news out of OTAs, or who have moved up or down since our first go-round.
There is not, generally, much movement this time of year. NFL teams are busy figuring out what they have now that the dust has settled on the NFL's roster-building season. The only insight we have as dynasty managers comes from coachspeak and the random beat reporter observation from the 10 minutes of practice they are allowed to see. I don't want to go crazy moving guys around based on coachspeak, and while this is true any time of year, it is especially true in the information desert that is June in dynasty fantasy football.
Starters (with Footballguys Tier in parentheses)
Players I'm comfortable starting, either at a specific position, or at a flex or superflex spot.
- Josh Allen, BUF (1)
- Joe Burrow, CIN (1)
- Lamar Jackson, BUF (1)
- Patrick Mahomes II, KC (1) Mahomes moved up from tier 2 to tier 1 in the Footballguys consensus rankings.
- Jayden Daniels, WASH (1) Daniels also moved up a tier, and I think he's exactly where he should be now.
- Jalen Hurts, PHI (1)
- Caleb Williams, CHI (1) Our last mover into the top tier this month, Williams rides the Ben Johnson hype train from tier 2 to tier 1.
- C.J. Stroud, HOU (2) He's dealing with some general shoulder soreness as we enter mid-June, which gives me a little pause, but I am betting on the bounce back from Stroud this year and I'm operating on the assumption the soreness is just the result of a driven young quarterback overdoing it a little bit in the offseason so he can put his perceived sophomore slump behind him.
- Justin Herbert, LAC (2)
- Bo Nix, DEN (2)
- Jordan Love, GB(2) Played hurt for almost all of last year. He might be the only worthwhile fantasy piece of the Packer passing game.
- Drake Maye, NEP (2)
- Baker Mayfield, TB (3)
- Jared Goff, DET (3)
- Kyler Murray, ARI (2) Murray jumps a tier in the Footballguys consensus rankings from last month's article.
- Brock Purdy, SF (2) Purdy also jumps a tier.
- Dak Prescott, DAL (4)
- Michael Penix Jr., ATL(4)
- J.J. McCarthy, MIN (5) McCarthy dropped a tier from last month. People are making a mistake. Get on board before it's too late.
- Cam Ward, TEN (FA) Within this bucket, I think we'll see Ward rise a tier or two once training camp rolls around. He drops a tier in the Footballguys consensus rankings this month, but once mandatory practices and training camp begin, I expect him to rise.
- Justin Fields, NYJ (FA) Another player who dropped a tier from last month, but that doesn't change his bucket or my outlook. I think I trust the new Jets regime to design an offense that will maximize the potential of Fields while also minimizing the risk of putting him in positions to fail. The offense is likely to feature a strong run game centered around Fields and a talented trio of running backs. My hope is that if the Jets are gouging teams with the run, it will set the table for some fireworks between Fields and his old OSU teammate, Garrett Wilson.
- Sam Darnold, SEA (FA) Darnold drops two tiers in consensus rankings, but I moved him from the rotation bucket last month to the starter bucket this month. I think I was still blinded a bit by the new shiny thing in Jalen Milroe and not giving the veteran enough credit. Darnold appears to have a solid hold on the starting job and is likely a reliable option as a low-end quarterback starter or a solid superflex choice. Milroe might still be the future, but Darnold would probably have to implode or suffer an injury to lose the starting position over the next year or two.
- Trevor Lawrence, JAX (3) Lawrence moves up both a tier and a bucket from last month as well, but I am struggling to be excited about the prospect of relying on him for a dynasty team. He's getting close to step-up or step-off time.
Many of these players could be pushed into the Rotation bucket depending on whether a league is Superflex and other specific rules related to your league's scoring or starting lineups. As we sit here today, these are the players I am reasonably confident I could rely on in starting lineups for my dynasty teams over at least the next couple of years.
