Welcome to the Dynasty Trading Post, where we examine optimizing strategy, roster construction, format, and player value oscillations every week with real-world completed dynasty trades.
This week, we will look at injured players to start the season.
All trades are Superflex unless stated otherwise.
WR Rashee Rice, Chiefs
Rice's six-game suspension announcement was not a big surprise, but the suspension, including the beginning of the season, was notable. Now, without Rice for the opening six weeks, teams with Rice might be looking for cash-out opportunities. For stronger dynasty teams expecting to be in the middle of the playoff race by Halloween, Rice is an ideal buy, especially if not selling critical lineup pieces.
Instructive Dynasty Trades
- Rice for Nick Chubb, Ricky Pearsall
- Rice for Rome Odunze
- Rice for DeVonta Smith, 26 3rd
- Rice for Khalil Shakir, Kyle Williams
- Rice for Stefon Diggs, Evan Engram, 26 3rd (2PPR TE)
- Rice for Quinshon Judkins, 26 2nd, 27 3rd
Rashee Rice is an impact option the moment he returns to the lineup. This makes for a cleaner dynasty buy and projection than a player notably returning from injury. All of these deals require giving up a notable piece, either contending or developmental in nature. Khalil Shakir and Kyle Williams are an ideal purchase price, both ancillary wide receivers likely not missed by a contending dynasty team. Rome Odunze has been insulated through an average or slower career start. The insulation is over if Odunze (or the Bears) are a lagging offense again this season. Nick Chubb is an ideal piece to utilize in a deal like this for Rice. Chubb has had the perfect storm ramp up to the season with Joe Mixon out for the foreseeable future and their notable young running back, Woody Marks, not having a splash-filled camp and preseason.
WR Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers
Aiyuk has some risk to his profile, and a decent-sized discount should be sought as a buyer. While he is set to return by midseason, there is a likely ramp-up period where the fantasy playoffs might be an arrival date for Aiyuk being up to speed with comfort in fantasy lineups. Plus, it has been two years since Aiyuk's highly efficient breakout season. Will Ricky Pearsall thwart some of Aiyuk's upside? Aiyuk is a warranted buy-low profile, but the wait time plus congested offense (Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey) complicates the purchase price.
Instructive Dynasty Trades
- Aiyuk for Isiah Pacheco
- Aiyuk for Jakobi Meyers, Chig Okonkwo
- Aiyuk for Cam Skattebo
- Aiyuk, 26 1st for Jaylen Waddle, 26 2nd
- Aiyuk for 26 2nd
- Aiyuk for Spencer Rattler
The ideal construction would either be a flip player like Spencer Rattler or using the Jaylen Waddle for Aiyuk+ trade example. Receiving a pick upgrade in addition to Aiyuk allows for multiple avenues to win the trade. If deep at the running back position, rebalancing periodically with the Pacheco or Skattebo examples towards a buy-low receiver like Aiyuk is a strong long-term position.
