Understanding the NFL's Injury Report

(per Dr. Bramel - Footballguys OG)

"The injury report released by the NFL is [made up of] two reports. The first is the Practice Participation report, which lists which injured players practiced and their participation level. It also includes players who rested or missed practice for non-injury-related reasons. The second is the Game Status Report, which gives the probability a player will play, i.e., Questionable, Doubtful, Out. The Practice Participation Report is released every day of the week (Monday through Saturday). The Game Status Report is released with the Friday participation report (Wednesday for Thursday games, Saturday for Monday games). In this feature, I'll include the Game Status Listing and my expectations of their likelihood of playing."

If you are reading this article on Saturday, make sure to come back on Sunday morning as more updates trickle in within the next 24 hours.

WR Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina | Hamstring | Questionable | Likely Inactive

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: we hate seeing late additions to the injury report, especially when it involves a soft tissue injury. I wrote this exact line last week in Gameday Expectations when discussing Cooper Kupp's hamstring injury, and the same sentiment applies here to rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan.

McMillan was added to the Panthers’ injury report after head coach Dave Canales told reporters that the issue “popped up today.” While McMillan is officially listed as questionable, the timing suggests he’s closer to doubtful. Fantasy managers should have a backup plan ready for Sunday.

TE Cedric Tillman, Cleveland | Hamstring | Questionable | Projecting Active

Cedric Tillman hasn’t logged a snap since Week 4 but practiced in full from Wednesday through Friday this week. Despite the positive trend, Cleveland has still listed him as questionable for Week 10.

Because Tillman has been on injured reserve and the Browns were on bye in Week 9, there’s no recent practice pattern to compare. That said, his full participation throughout the week is an encouraging sign that he’s likely to be available on Sunday.

TE Harold Fannin Jr., Cleveland | Hamstring | Questionable | Projecting Active

Harold Fannin Jr. entered Week 10 without an injury designation but was held out of Thursday’s practice due to a hamstring issue. He returned on Friday in a limited capacity, which suggests this wasn’t a new injury.

Given his return to practice, it is possible the Browns were simply managing some tightness or discomfort and opted to give the rookie tight end additional rest. I’m tentatively projecting Fannin to be available for Week 10.

WR Garrett Wilson, NY Jets | Knee | Questionable | Projecting Active

Garrett Wilson went down in Week 6 with a knee injury, and MRI results later revealed a possible bone bruise. At the time, I projected him for a Week 10 return. Coming out of the bye, Wilson has practiced but remained limited for most of the week. On Thursday, he told reporters that he expects to play on Sunday.

I guess we will take Wilson at his word since he did log a full participation on Friday.  I’m sticking with my original projection and remain optimistic that Wilson is active in Week 10 return. Regarding fantasy production, despite time missed, historically, WRs coming off knee injuries return to form. For Wilson, this would leave him around a top-30 WR.

RB Aaron Jones Sr., Minnesota | Shoulder | Questionable | Projecting Active

Aaron Jones Sr. is nursing an AC joint sprain but remains optimistic about his chances to play in Week 10. Despite being limited throughout the week, Jones told reporters he expects to be ready by Sunday.

While AC joint sprains often lead to missed time, mild cases can be managed through pain. That said, Jones has a long history of nagging injuries, and given the high risk of aggravation with this type of injury, Jordan Mason should remain a priority handcuff regardless of Jones’ Week 10 status.

RB Alvin Kamara, New Orleans | Ankle | Questionable | Projecting Active

Alvin Kamara was limited all week with an ankle injury. We have seen this trend in previous weeks, and Kamara has ended up dressing on Sundays. I would expect the same this week.
