Week 7 is shaping up to be a frustrating one for fantasy managers, with several big names carrying questionable tags and plenty of uncertainty heading into Sunday. Puka Nacua, Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley, and DeVonta Smith are among the players whose availability remains up in the air, and not all questionable tags are created equal.

Even if your player is active, that doesn't necessarily mean he's out of the woods, especially when it comes to hamstring and calf injuries. This week, the challenge isn't just predicting who will play, but determining who you can actually trust in your fantasy lineup. Fortunately, we've got injury data, practice trends, and a little educated guesswork to help sort through the chaos. Let's get into it.

Understanding the NFL's Injury Report

(per Dr. Bramel - Footballguys OG)

"The injury report released by the NFL is [made up of] two reports. The first is the Practice Participation report, which lists which injured players practiced and their participation level. It also includes players who rested or missed practice for non-injury-related reasons. The second is the Game Status Report, which gives the probability that a player will play, i.e., Questionable, Doubtful, Out. The Practice Participation Report is released every day of the week (Monday through Saturday). The Game Status Report is released with the Friday participation report (Wednesday for Thursday games, Saturday for Monday games). In this feature, I'll include the Game Status Listing and my expectations of their likelihood of playing."

  • Gameday Decision = this is going to come down to how the player feels in pre-game warmups
  • Trending Doubtful = Likely Inactive
  • Trending Probable = Likely Active
  • Ruled Out = This player has already been ruled out; get him out of lineups!

If you are reading this article on Saturday, come back Sunday morning as more updates trickle in over the next 24 hours.

Sunday 1:00 PM EST Games

RB Jordan Mason, Minnesota | Thumb | Questionable | Projecting Active

Jordan Mason is set to come off IR, and by all indications, that is exactly what will happen. Mason practiced in full all week after missing the past four games with a thumb injury (five weeks including the bye). Nevertheless, the Vikings have listed him as questionable.

As expected, there is no strong correlation between thumb/hand injuries and decreased fantasy production or usage for RBs upon returning. Intuitively, you might worry about ball security, but in my opinion, that would be overanalyzing the situation.

I expect Mason to be active, and if he is, this matchup is simply too good to leave him on your bench. Mason handled 44% of Minnesota's rushing attempts in Week 1. In Week 7 a similar usuage should result in points.

QB Lamar Jackson, Baltimore | High Ankle Sprain | Questionable | Projecting Inactive

Lamar Jackson has missed the past two weeks with an ankle injury, and on Friday, we finally got some clarity on the specifics: a high ankle sprain.

This diagnosis helps explain Jackson's extended absence but also suggests he could miss additional time. High ankle sprains typically carry a 3-4 week recovery timeline, and Jackson's historical Recovery Score ranks in the bottom 25th percentile. This metric measures how quickly and consistently a player has returned from injuries compared to positional averages, with lower scores indicating a tendency toward longer recoveries.

Given Jackson's reliance on his legs to extend plays and generate fantasy production, I lean toward him sitting out another week. I suspect we'll need to see Jackson log at least one full practice before feeling confident about his return.

ORB Dylan Sampson, Cleveland | Knee | Questionable | Projecting Active

Similar to Jordan Mason, Sampson is also eligible to return from IR in Week 7. Sampson practiced throughout the week and even logged a full session on Friday, a strong indication that he is nearing a return.

While I also project Sampson to play, I am less enthusiastic about his fantasy outlook. Sampson remains second fiddle to Quinshon Judkins, and unlike Mason's thumb injury, there is moderate evidence suggesting that knee injuries can negatively impact RB fantasy production upon return. Even if active, Sampson remains nothing more than a handcuff who belongs on fantasy benches for now.

RB Breece Hall, NY Jets | Quadriceps | Questionable | Projecting Inactive

Breece Hall finished the week with back-to-back limited practices, a step in the right direction after failing to practice at all the previous week. Most RBs miss two weeks or less with quadriceps strains, but Hall has entered the minority, having already missed three weeks and now at risk of missing a fourth.

While it might seem foolish that the Jets did not place Hall on IR if he ultimately misses Week 7, these injuries often present as week-to-week situations, making it difficult to predict an exact return date. Given his extended absence, I would prefer to see Hall log a full practice before feeling confident about his availability.

QB Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay | Thumb | Questionable | Projecting Active

Baker Mayfield has been pushing to return, and based on practice trends and recent reports, it sounds like he will be back this week.

As you might expect, quarterbacks returning from hand injuries tend to experience some decline in performance, particularly with passing accuracy. Before his injury, Mayfield was completing roughly 63% of his passes, already a noticeable drop from his 2023 and 2024 numbers when he was a top-10 fantasy quarterback.

Given the historical trends following hand injuries, I would not be surprised if Mayfield experiences some rocky performances as he works his way back. With Emeka Egbuka also ruled out, there are additional reasons to temper expectations for Mayfield’s fantasy outlook this week.

WR Christian Kirk, San Francisco | Calf | Questionable | Projecting Active

Christian Kirk has missed extended time with a calf injury, but he is now eligible to return from IR, and reports out of the Bay Area suggest that he will.

Historically, WRs returning from calf injuries have struggled, with these injuries carrying a high Fantasy Points After Injury Decline Effect (FAIDE) score. This metric evaluates the impact of an injury on fantasy production, snap share, and target share after a player returns. The higher the score, the greater the expected decline in performance and usage. Calf strains can be particularly difficult for WRs to overcome, even after they are healthy enough to get back on the field.

With Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel Sr. sidelined, Kirk has some intriguing flex appeal given the potential opportunity. However, considering the historical trends associated with calf injuries, I would be cautious about treating him as an automatic start simply because of the situation.
