RELATED: See our staff's top players at the offensive skill positions.
Quarterback | Running Back | Wide Receiver | Tight End

Recently, we asked the Footballguys staff for their top rookies at each position. Over the next several weeks, we'll get deeper into the 2025 draft class and release our massive 2025 Footballguys Rookie Guide after the Super Bowl. For now, here's a quick look at how our staff sees the running back position.

Remember that it is early in the process. Showcase events like the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl will allow us to better compare these players, and the NFL Combine will add even more clarity.

Key

  • Rank: the player's rank at the position.
  • Pts: the number of points the player gained in the voting; the max changes based on how many staff members participated and how deep the voting was, but bigger numbers are always better.
  • Firsts: the number of first-place votes the player received from a staff member.

1. CIN: Extension for Ja'Marr Chase a priority

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Kelsey Conway

Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase is entering the final year of his current contract, and director of player personnel Duke Tobin said signing Chase to an extension is a priority for the team this offseason.

Our view: Chase is set to become the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. The Bengals aren't known for such large contracts, but they can't end the connection between Chase and QB Joe Burrow. In 2024, Chase's 127 catches, 1,708 yards, and 17 receiving touchdowns led the NFL in each category. The Bengals did not offer Chase enough last year, and after his monster season they have no leverage.

2. DAL: Ken Dorsey under consideration for OC opening

Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey will likely interview for the same position in the near future with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.

Our view: The Browns got rid of Dorsey after just one year, and he was fired in the 2023 season with the Bills. The Cowboys have a ton more talent than the Browns do, so if hired, Dorsey could get a lot from guys like QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb.

3. NYJ: Steve Wilks to be new DC

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has agreed to terms with the New York Jets to become their new defensive coordinator, according to sources.

Our view: Jets new head coach Aaron Glenn gets a trusted and talented veteran coach. Wilks was last the defensive coordinator for the 49ers back in 2023, and he knows how to craft a swarming defense. Reports indicate Wilks will be calling plays on the defensive side of the ball.

4. LVR: Maxx Crosby likes new coach hire

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Las Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby, amid swirling trade rumors, said he likes the hire of head coach Pete Carroll. 'I want to win every year,' Crosby said. 'That's the competition in me, and I see that in him.'

Our view: Everything is a competition with Carroll running the show. Crosby is the ultimate competitor, so he obviously like the fit with the Raiders. He will be coming back from season-ending ankle surgery, but having a motivated Crosby is nothing but a good thing for a Raiders team searching for an identity.

📣 Voice Of The Footballguy 🎤

📊 POLL RESULTS: In our last issue of the Daily Update, we asked you Footballguys:

Which rookie RB takes control of his backfield first?

And the Footballguy says: I trust TreVeyon Henderson more than the Patriots do.

TODAY: Clayton Gray’s deep dive into how player values are shifting in high-stakes NFFC drafts reveals one clear trend — quarterbacks are climbing.

Among the biggest movers this week: Lamar Jackson surged 6 spots, Jayden Daniels climbed 4, and Bo Nix jumped 8. But which of these rising QBs most deserves the boost?

So today, we ask you Footballguys:

🗳️ POLL: Which rising QB most deserves their recent NFFC ADP surge?

When you vote in the Poll below, you'll see the current standings, and we'll post the final results in the next edition of the Daily Update.

5. LAR: Matthew Stafford plans to continue career

Source: NFL.com - Grant Gordon

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford plans to play next season but it is not known if he will be playing for the Rams, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Our view: As he showed in 2024, Stafford can still play at a high level. The Rams are a playoff team so long as Stafford is the starter. Stafford is due a non-guaranteed $27 million in the final year of his contract. We'll see the Rams and Stafford work something out to get him some guaranteed money for 2025.

6. MIA: Miami talking with Jalen Milroe at Senior Bowl

Source: The Miami Herald - C. Isaiah Smalls II

University of Alabama QB Jalen Milroe has had some conversations with the Miami Dolphins at the Senior Bowl in Mobile (AL) this week, which is possible because the Dolphins have multiple coaches on the Senior Bowl coaching staff.

Our view: Milroe had an up-and-down week of practice at the Senior Bowl. The physical talent is there in terms of athleticism and arm strength. However, he needs to have refined skill as a passer. Teams will consider Milroe a developmental prospect with a ton of upside if he plays up to his potential.

7. BUF: Extension possible for Josh Allen

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Myles Simmons

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen is currently under contract until after the 2028 season, but general manager Brandon Beane is not ruling out the possibility of signing Allen to a contract extension this offseason.

Our view: Allen has a cap hit of $43.2 million in 2025, and there is $96.8 million remaining in dead money. In 2026, Allen's cap hit skyrockets to almost $64 million, so the Bills could extend Allen with the idea of giving him more guaranteed money and dropping his annual cap hit to something a bit more manageable.

8. CHI: Press Taylor joining coaching staff

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor is being hired by the Chicago Bears as their passing game coordinator, according to sources.

Our view: Taylor has learned under Doug Pederson for years in two stops (Eagles, Jaguars). Now, Taylor will help the Bears get the most from QB Caleb Williams.

9. CIN: Jermaine Burton's roster spot in jeopardy?

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Kelsey Conway

Cincinnati Bengals WR Jermaine Burton 'has done nothing' and will 'have to start doing something quickly' if he hopes to remain with the team much longer, according to director of personnel Duke Tobin.

Our view: A third-round pick out of Alabama in the 2024 NFL Draft, Burton did almost nothing in 14 games. He caught only four passes for 107 yards as a rookie. Entering just his second season, Burton is clearly on the roster bubble.
