Which rookie RB takes control of his backfield first?

And the Footballguy says: I trust TreVeyon Henderson more than the Patriots do.

TODAY: Clayton Gray’s deep dive into how player values are shifting in high-stakes NFFC drafts reveals one clear trend β€” quarterbacks are climbing.

Among the biggest movers this week: Lamar Jackson surged 6 spots, Jayden Daniels climbed 4, and Bo Nix jumped 8. But which of these rising QBs most deserves the boost?

So today, we ask you Footballguys:

1. SF: San Francisco turned down George Kittle trade offer

Source: The Athletic - Dianna Russini

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $76.4 million earlier this week, but not before an unnamed team offered the 49ers a second-round draft pick during the 2025 NFL Draft.

Our view: A second-round pick would have been a good deal for both sides, but the 49ers wanted to keep Kittle around as a key piece for their offense. Entering his age-32 season, with his new deal Kittle is under contract through 2029. Last year, Kittle finished with 78 catches for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns. That was good for the best tight end mark in standard-scoring leagues, and Kittle has been a top-3 fantasy tight end in every season but two in his pro career.

2. CAR: Adam Thielen not looking past '25

Source: The Athletic - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers WR Adam Thielen isn't looking past the 2025 season, but his family wanted him to play this season.

Our view: Thielen chose to play one more year after consulting his family. He reworked his contract to make it essentially a one-year, $8.5 million deal for 2025. Thielen can still produce, even though the Panthers have added more talent to the room this offseason (mainly in the draft). Last year, Thielen caught 48 passes for 615 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. Now, with first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan as likely the lead receiver we should see Thielen work as a solid veteran/no.3 option for QB Bryce Young.

Defensive backs are people, too.

No, really, they are.

There's no defensive position group with a bigger disconnect between fantasy and reality than at defensive back. From an NFL perspective, defensive backs are wildly valuable--a cornerback was the first defensive player selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. But defensive backs are both plentiful and unpredictable in fantasy for the most part. Most dynasty IDP rookie drafts come and go without more than one or two defensive backs being drafted. In redraft formats, it's not much better--most of the first-year defensive backs are, at most, late-round fliers.

But this season, it's a much different story. In fact, it's unprecedented. The first IDP drafted in many rookie drafts isn't just going to be a defensive back. It's going to be a cornerback--even in formats that don't require them.

It's a wild and wacky world, folks.

As always, where this year's rookie defensive backs will begin their NFL careers is almost as important as who they are, and those newcomers aren't the only players affected by the festivities in Green Bay--there are veteran defensive backs who are either elated by what happened in the draft or who need a hug.

But there's nowhere else we can start a look at this year's biggest winners and losers at defensive back except in Jacksonville--with a player who could break some IDP leagues this season.

Defensive Back Winners

CB/WR Travis Hunter, Jacksonville

The Jaguars made an aggressive move up to trade for the Heisman Trophy winner, sending a package of picks that included their 2026 first-rounder to Cleveland to make Hunter one of the faces of the franchise. The Jaguars have said that Hunter will primarily start his NFL career as a wide receiver, but Yahoo's Matt Harmon wrote that no matter where Hunter plays, he has superstar potential.

"I won't be foolish enough to make proclamations about his role in the league," he said. "I'm almost positive he will attempt to play both ways as much as possible. Right now, the reality is that no one knows because every team will have a bespoke plan for him, and that may change once he gets into camp or deeper into his career. All I know for sure is that based on his Reception Perception data, the film makes it clear that he has all the calling cards of a future star No. 1 wide receiver."

3. DET: No extension for Jameson Williams?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams had his fifth-year option picked up on Friday, April 25, but it's unclear if the team will sign a long-term extension with Williams. GM Brad Holmes said the team is 'taking it as it goes' in regards to a extension for Williams, and Holmes added that 'you just don't know what's going to happen' due to the cost associated with wide receiver contracts.

Our view: There's no need to rush a deal right now with Williams under contract through the 2026 season. He played up to his potential in 2024 (finally), and the former first-round pick compiled career highs in catches (58), yards (1,001), and touchdowns (7). Lions GM Brad Holmes said the team did not entertain offers for Williams during the draft. If he continues to stay healthy and produce, Williams will earn that extension in a year or so.

4. NFL: Two teams vying for Nick Chubb?

Source: 92.3 The Fan Cleveland - Ken Carman

Free-agent RB Nick Chubb (Browns) is still very much wanted by the Cleveland Browns, but the Chicago Bears are reportedly serious about signing him as well, according to Ken Carman of 92.3 The Fan.'The Browns want to bring Nick Chubb back. They are trying hard to bring Nick back. I know this. The Bears are very serious about bringing him in and are trying to make this push,' Carman said.

Our view: If healthy, Chubb could still play at a high level. He hasn't been the same since getting banged up early in the 2023 season. Chubb certainly didn't look like himself last year, only gaining 332 yards on 103 carries in eight games. If added by the Bears, Chubb would compete with D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson for touches in that backfield.

5. HOU: Houston kicks the tires on Nyheim Hines

Source: KPRC.com - Aaron Wilson

Free-agent RB Nyheim Hines (Browns) worked out for the Houston Texans on Thursday, May 1.

Our view: Hines hasn't played football since the 2022 season when he split time with the Colts and the Bills. He missed all of 2023 due to an accident involving a jet ski, and he couldn't get right last year with the Browns. He was declared out for the remainder of the 2024 season in late October. If healthy, the veteran back can help out in passing situations. The Texans may just be updating their emergency list here.

6. TEN: Treylon Burks has option declined

Source: PaulKuharsky.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans WR Treylon Burks had his fifth-year option declined Thursday, May 1.

Our view: No surprise here. The former first-round pick has failed to play up to expectations, mainly due to his health. He's still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 5 last season. The room is even more full this year with veteran additions and draft picks, so there's no guarantee Burks will make the final roster in what is clearly a 'prove-it' season.

7. CLE: Jerome Ford takes a pay cut

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Ford reportedly agreed to a reworked contract on Friday, May 2, that will lower his base salary from $3.486 million in 2025 to a guaranteed $1.75 million, according to a source.

Our view: The Browns revamped their running back room with the addition of second-round RB Quinshon Judkins (Ohio State). We should see Judkins as the lead back, and he brings a blend of power and speed to the field. Ford is competing to be the primary change-of-pace back for the Browns this year. He'll compete with another rookie, Dylan Sampson (Tennessee) for that spot.

8. LAR: Coach hopes Matthew Stafford extends career

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is expected to go year-to-year with his decision to continue playing, but head coach Sean McVay said he hopes Stafford plays for several more seasons.

Our view: The Rams don't have an heir apparent on the roster. But they do have two first-round picks for 2026, having acquired the Falcons' top selection for next year. That gives them ammunition to trade up for a quarterback in 2026 if they so desire. Still, McVay's hope is understandable. Stafford has kept the Rams contenders. He is 19-12 as a starter the past two seasons, completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 7,727 yards with 44 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. "We have a chance with him every time he's at the switch, and love working with him," McVay told Adam Schein on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio. In addition, fantasy managers with stakes in Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Kyren Williams have a better chance of getting the most out of their investments.

9. SF: Ross Dwelley returning for another stint in San Fran

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent TE Ross Dwelley (Falcons) signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, May 2. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Our view: Dwelley spent six seasons with the 49ers before signing with Atlanta last year. He appeared in every game for the Falcons last season and caught one pass for five yards in 105 offensive snaps. He also had one tackle on special teams. In his first 49ers stint, Dwelley had 44 catches for 518 yards and five touchdowns. George Kittle, Luke Farrell, Brayden Willis, Jake Tonges, and Mason Pline are the other 49ers tight ends on the 90-man roster.

10. GB: Green Bay inks six draft picks

Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers third-round draft choice WR Savion Williams (Texas Christian), fourth-round draft choice DL Barryn Sorrell (Texas), fifth-round draft choice DE Collin Oliver (Oklahoma State), sixth-round draft choice DT Warren Brinson (Georgia) and seventh-round draft choices CB Micah Robinson (Tulane) and OL John Williams (Cincinnati) signed their four-year rookie contracts on Thursday, May 1. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Our view: Savion Williams is the player we're most excited about here, and Fantasy GMs should follow suit. Super athletic and with size, Williams reminds some in the scouting community of Nico Collins (Texans). He can take the top off the defense, and Williams has strength after the catch too. With refined route-running and improved concentration, Williams could end up being a steal for the Packers - and for dynasty GMs out there.
