Howdy Reader,

What a season.

I said this last year, and I'm saying it again.

Congratulations to the Super Bowl Champion Eagles. And congratulations to the Chiefs for a fantastic season.

As I said yesterday, my overwhelming thought for this year is simply: Gratitude.

Two weeks prior, I wrote about "The Top 5 Players Who Might Not Be Ready for Week 1" which examined players with injuries that could carry over into the next season. Following the Super Bowl, I have returned to complete this list of player injuries. In fantasy football, there is no such thing as the offseason. It's time to prepare for 2025.

Key: Position Player, Team | Injury

WR Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco | ACL Reconstruction with MCL

In the previous article, I discussed ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) recovery timelines a lot - specifically for NFL wide receivers and running backs. On average, wide receivers return to play at 48 weeks from their surgery date.

49ers' wideout Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL in Week 7 on October 20th. However, because Aiyuk's MCL was also involved, his surgery date was delayed till November 11th. As a result, Week 1 of the 2025 season would put Aiyuik at ~43 weeks post-op. Given the multiple ligaments involved and this recovery timeline, I believe the Aiyuk is a candidate to start the 2025 season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

In terms of fantasy production, I do like Aiyuk's 2025 outlook. Players with a similar archetype to Aiyuk have historically done well. Even with missed time, Aiyuk could be a value in fantasy drafts next year.

WR Rashee Rice, Kansas City | LCL Reconstruction

Rashee Rice's 2024 knee injury was of the unconventional variant. Rice tore his LCL without tearing his ACL.

1. MIN: Vikings may consider tag for Sam Darnold

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a candidate for the franchise tag if the two sides are not able to work out an agreement before the tag deadline, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Our view: As Profootballtalk.com notes, with two bad games to wrap the season — one with the No. 1 seed on the line and one in the Wild Card round — the Vikings seem to be more content to move forward with 2024 first-rounder J.J. McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season after injuring his knee in the preseason opener against the Raiders. Still, it's not outside the realm of possibility the team could keep both. If they do, it would require franchising Darnold. If that's not how it plays out, the veteran will have plenty of suitors, with the Raiders possibly among the most interested.

2. NYG: Russell Wilson could be option

Source: GiantsWire - Dan Benton

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Russell Wilson is expected to be an option for the New York Giants if he hits the free-agent market, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Our view: Any available veteran with a pulse is fair game for a team with only Tommy DeVito under contract. It's worth noting that Wilson seems eager to return to Pittsburgh, and talks with the Steelers are ongoing. The Raiders have also been mentioned as a possible destination if things don't work out between Wilson and the Steelers.

3. SF: Deebo Samuel allowed to seek trade

Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel said he has received permission from the team to seek a trade this offseason.

Our view: Samuel requested a trade during his exit meetings with the team after the season. "It was a hard conversation to have with [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] because of our relationship," Samuel said on Sunday. "But I have to do what's best. I'm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it's best that we find another team." Samuel and the 49ers are coming off a disappointing 2024 campaign. The team finished 6-11, and Samuel endured one of his least productive seasons, tallying just 806 scrimmage yards and four total touchdowns—his lowest totals since an injury-plagued 2020 season. There are plenty of receiver-needy teams, so we'll be watching to see what kind of interest Samuel draws.

4. MIA: Tyreek Hill expected back with MIA

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill is not expected to be traded this offseason even though he expressed some frustrations after the season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Our view: This isn't a huge surprise. Hill's trade request after the regular-season finale was made out of frustration, and the veteran wideout has made amends as recently as this week. That said, there are still concerns. Hill, who will enter the season at 31, didn't hit the high-end speeds last season that we've seen in the past. And Tua Tagovailoa's concussion history further ratchets up the risk level. But it's also worth remembering Hill is just a year removed from league-winning production. As we head into drafts this year, landing Hill in Round 3 as either a WR2 or WR3 gives you plenty of latitude to mitigate the risk.

5. BAL: Derrick Henry could receive extension

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Baltimore Ravens RB Derrick Henry is expected to talk with the Ravens about a contract extension this offseason, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Our view: Henry is coming off a phenomenal first season in Baltimore, having compiled 1,921 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on a career-high 5.9 yards per carry across 17 regular-season games. He added 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 19 catches. He became the first player in NFL history with multiple seasons of 1,900-plus rush yards. After Baltimore was eliminated from the postseason, GM Eric DeCosta and head coach John Harbaugh suggested an extension was possible. With or without an extension, Henry will be in the RB1 conversation when draft season rolls around.

6. NYJ: Davante Adams may look at West Coast teams if cut

Source: ChargersWire - Gavino Borquez

New York Jets WR Davante Adams would be open to signing with the Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers if he is released by the Jets this offseason, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Our view: The Chargers could use a true alpha receiver to work opposite rising star Ladd McConkey, the Rams are preparing to trade Cooper Kupp, and the 49ers have given Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade. In addition, Samuel's teammate, Brandin Aiyuk, is recovering from a torn ACL, and we don't yet have a timetable for his return. Adams' next stop will be of great interest. Stay tuned.

7. CLE: Cleveland may look at two QBs

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins and Minnesota Vikings QB Daniel Jones could be options for the Cleveland Browns this offseason if they look to add a veteran quarterback, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Our view: The Browns wanted to add a quarterback to compete with Deshaun Watson for the starting job in 2025. But after Waston re-tore his Achilles and underwent a second surgery, the Browns need a starter. Cousins and Jones are just two of the players likely to be available. Cousins remains under contract with the Falcons, but most observers expect them to move on from the veteran this offseason.

8. DAL: Dallas working to hire Ken Dorsey

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey is finalizing a deal to be hired by the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed role, according to sources Monday, Feb. 10.

Our view: As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, the Cowboys initially hired current head coach Brian Schottenheimer as a coaching analyst in 2022, so Dorsey may start in a similar role with the Cowboys. Or maybe he's the hire for quarterback coach, an opening that's not yet filled. Dorsey interviewed for the offensive coordinator position that went to Klayton Adams. The Browns fired Dorsey as their offensive coordinator after the season. Cleveland finished the season 28th in yards and 32nd in points. Dorsey was Buffalo's offensive coordinator from 2022 before the Bills fired him midway through the 2023 season. Schottenheimer will call the plays for the Cowboys in 2025.

9. HOU: Teammate hopes Stefon Diggs returns

Source: HoustonTexans.com - Drew Dougherty

Houston Texans impending free-agent WR Stefon Diggs is a player that QB C.J. Stroud hopes to return next season because they were building chemistry before Diggs suffered his injury.

Our view: Diggs tore his ACL in a late October win over the Colts. Before the injury, he caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a 6-yard score. In the regular season, the Texans were 6-2 with Diggs in the lineup and 4-5 without him. He's a free agent this offseason. Diggs' market, which could include the Texans (Tank Dell could miss the entire season as he recovers from a knee injury of his own), will likely become clearer as we get a better feel for the former Bills' recovery timeline.
