1. ATL: Teams calling about Kyle Pitts

Source: FOX Sports - Jordan Schultz

Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts has been the subject of trade calls the team has received, according to sources. The team would prefer to keep him, and it would take at least a Day 2 pick to spark Atlanta's interest.

Our view: Let's keep an eye on this situation although nothing seems imminent. Pitts has not played up to his potential since his rookie season. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his game, but the physical freakish attributes are still there. Pitts is in the final year of his rookie contract, so any team trading for him would have to get him a new deal now or after this season.

2. HOU: Christian Kirk drawing rave reviews

Source: TexansWire - Cole Thompson

Houston Texans WR Christian Kirk 'has been everything we could ask for (so far this offseason),' according to head coach DeMeco Ryans. Teammate Nico Collins referred to Kirk as a 'slot magician.''You talk about a guy who is dedicated to getting better. He has honed in on his craft and he's leading our young guys. He's a hard worker, he shows up every day with the right attitude working hard and showing guys how it's done,' Ryans said.

Our view: The last time Kirk played a full season (2022), he finished with over 1,100 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Injuries shortened his last two seasons with the Jaguars, and now Kirk is impressing with the Texans. We're not projecting him over 1,000 with this new team, but if Kirk plays a full season as a 'slot magician' we could see him catching around 60 passes for around 800 yards and 4-5 touchdowns. That's worth a consideration as a deep flex option for Fantasy GMs out there.

Evan Engram is no joke…but he might be The Joker

Evan Engram enters his ninth NFL season searching for renewed purpose. The Jacksonville Jaguars released the veteran tight end in March to free up nearly $6 million in cap space. The Denver Broncos moved quickly, signing him to a two-year, $23 million deal with $16.5 million fully guaranteed.

At first glance, Engram no longer looks like a compelling fantasy option:

  • He turns 31 in September
  • He missed half of the 2024 season
  • He's joining his third team
  • He failed to finish as a top-12 fantasy tight end last year

However, discounting the savvy veteran could be a major mistake. Engram has done enough throughout his career to warrant optimism, especially in Denver, where he may be stepping into Sean Payton's coveted "Joker" role.

The Joke(r) is On You

Sean Payton made it clear early this offseason that he was searching for a "Joker." It's his preferred term for a hybrid offensive weapon who creates mismatches across formations, typically a tight end or running back with dynamic skills.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Payton elaborated on his desire to find such a player and emphasized how vital that kind of versatility is to unlocking his offense's potential:

After signing Engram, Payton confirmed that he believes he found his man:

Regardless of how you feel about the "Joker" moniker, what matters is that Payton is one of the league's most respected offensive minds and believed this type of player was essential to elevate Denver's attack.

Payton's Uneven History with Tight Ends

In a league where the average offensive coordinator lasts just over two seasons, Payton's 20-plus years of play-calling offer an invaluable sample for fantasy analysts. His track record shows a willingness to mold his offense to fit his personnel.

Most remember Jimmy Graham's historic run in New Orleans, but there were also stretches when the tight end position faded into irrelevance. Payton never forced the issue when his roster lacked elite options.

Table: Sean Payton's Tight End Usage (2006-2024)

  • Before Graham, Payton's Saints had five seasons without a starting-caliber fantasy tight end.
  • Jimmy Graham was a fantasy juggernaut from 2011 to 2014, never finishing worse than TE2.
  • Ben Watson had a career year in 2015, finishing as TE7.
  • From 2016 to 2018, tight ends returned to fantasy obscurity.
  • Jared Cook posted a TE7 finish in 2019, but dropped to TE18 in 2020.
  • Since 2021, Adam Trautman has been the most productive tight end on Payton's rosters, including both years in Denver.

Is Engram as dominant as Jimmy Graham was in his prime? No. But it's fair to say Engram is the second-most talented and accomplished tight end Payton has ever had at his disposal.

3. KC: Travis Kelce rejuvenated

Source: NFL.com - Grant Gordon

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce looks like he feels better than he did at the start of last season, according to QB Patrick Mahomes. 'He's in here,' Mahomes said. 'He's working. I know his body feels good. I think he feels better than even last year before going into last season. I think he's motivated to go out there and have an even better year than he had this last. If it's the last ride, you would never know,' Mahomes said. 'The way he's talking about football. The way he's talking about working and trying to be even better this year than he was last year. He doesn't seem like a guy like it's his last ride, like he's tired of the job.'

Our view: Kelce didn't look like himself in 2024, and we wonder how much he has left in the tank. Even as an older player, Kelce still has plenty of fantasy value. With the quality of the Chiefs offense and the volume of targets he should still be in line for, Kelce could catch around 80-85 passes and finish as a top-10 fantasy tight end.

4. PIT: Trey Palmer on Pittsburgh's radar

Source: SteelersNow.com - Zachary Smith

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Trey Palmer is reportedly a player that the Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in trading for, according to Zachary Smith of Steelers Now.

Our view: The Steelers are interested in adding talent to the roster at the wide receiver position, especially after trading away George Pickens to the Cowboys. Earlier reports indicated the Steelers did check in on the availability of Chris Olave (Saints) as well. Palmer has speed to his game and would bring that to the field for the Steelers if added.

5. SF: Christian McCaffrey looking sharp

Source: The Athletic - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee) 'looked electric' during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Our view: 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey is as "healthy as can be" and that the team must "protect him from himself." Everyone knows McCaffrey is an elite playmaker when healthy, but it's been the staying healthy part that has been a problem in recent years. McCaffrey has injury risk, but is seen as a low-end RB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2025. Isaac Guerendo could get more work to keep McCaffrey fresh as the year goes on.

6. DET: Detroit continues to talk up Jameson Williams

Source: ESPN.com - Eric Woodyard

Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams has 'gotten so much stronger' this offseason, according to head coach Dan Campbell. Per Campbell, the 'sky's the limit for him' and they 'expect him to have a huge season.'

Our view: Williams finally played up to his potential last year, posting career-highs in receptions (58), receiving yards (1,001), and receiving touchdowns (7). New OC John Morton is predicting a breakout season, but Fantasy GMs still see Williams as an inconsistent WR3/flex option with upside.

7. SF: Jauan Jennings not missing a beat

Source: The Athletic - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings was the favorite target of QB Brock Purdy during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Our view: Let's keep an eye on this as the offseason rolls on. The 49ers are dealing with banged up wide receivers missing time in Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall. Depending on when Pearsall is ready, Jennings could be in line to be the team's no.1 receiver to begin the season. We like him as a WR3/flex option from a fantasy perspective.

8. SF: Brandon Aiyuk not on the field

Source: The Athletic - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) did not participate in drills during OTAs Thursday, May 29.

Our view: No surprise here. Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL last season and likely won’t even be ready at the start of the season as he continues to rehab. Reports earlier this year indicated Aiyuk could be ready around the middle of the regular season.

9. SF: Jordan Watkins making an impact

Source: The Athletic - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers WR Jordan Watkins looked 'fast and fluid' and was one of the few rookies to have a prominent role during OTAs Thursday, May 29, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Our view: Watkins has plenty of speed and moves in the open field, so it's no surprise he's turning heads at OTAs. We'll see what he can do as training camp gets here. Watkins is down the depth chart (fifth or sixth) but has added value as a return man option as well.

10. NFL: Von Miller plans on playing in 2025

Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Free-agent DE Von Miller (Bills) told 9News' Mike Klis that he is 'definitely' playing in 2025.

Our view: Miller is not the same player he used to be, but some team might want him later in the year to provide veteran pass-rushing help. Even though some Broncos fans want him to return, Miller himself even admitted recently that there's no room for a player like him in Denver anymore. Miller will have to continue playing the waiting game.

11. NYG: Jaxson Dart inks his rookie deal

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New York Giants first-round draft choice Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss) signed his four-year rookie contract worth $17 million on Friday, May 30.

Our view: The Giants moved back into the first round to select Dart. The rookie is seen as the quarterback of the future, but he might not see the field in 2025. The Giants have Russell Wilson in line to be their starter in Week 1. If/when things fall apart with Wilson, the team could turn the reins over to Dart. He's got a strong arm and the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield.

12. CIN: Cincinnati impressed with Jordan Moore

Source: Bengals.com - Dan Hoard

Cincinnati Bengals WR Jordan Moore - an undrafted free-agent out of Duke - will be a player to keep an eye on in the preseason, according to Dan Hoard of Bengals.com.'He's an A+ young man, fits our culture, and wants to be great. He's coachable, and I'm excited to have him as one of our guys,' wide receivers coach Troy Walters said recently

Our view: Moore was extremely productive in college at Duke. For his Blue Devils career, Moore played in 49 games and had 35 starts, catching 177 passes for 2,352 yards and 21 touchdowns. He's an explosive player off the line of scrimmage, and Moore can change direction quickly without losing much speed. He's buried on the depth chart with the Bengals, so with impressive performances in training camp and the preseason Moore is angling for a developmental spot on the practice squad.
