Falcons | Michael Penix not ready for full practice Wed May 27, 01:06 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee) is able to participate in individual drills and seven-on-seven drills but has not been cleared for team drills at this point, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.
| Footballguys view: "He's not 100 percent, but he's exactly where he needs to be," Stefanski said of the third-year quarterback. Once Penix is ready, the 2024 first-round draft pick is expected to compete with offseason signee Tua Tagovailoa for the starting job. As Field Level Media notes, both quarterbacks are entering a new offensive scheme led by Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. The Falcons also have QBs Trevor Siemian and undrafted rookie Jack Strand on the roster. |

Atlanta Falcons WR Zachariah Branch reportedly stood out at Falcons OTAs, with an explosive catch-and-run during offense vs. defense, and overall, standing out amongst the offensive players, in the opinion of Daniel Flick of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday, May 19.

Woods look helpless with a juke on an out-route, then followed it up with a catch and spin that drew immediate Bijan Robinson comparisons." For a receiver who was drafted 79th overall, the early buzz has been anything but quiet. Footballguy Sigmund Bloom believes Branch's quickness, 4.35 speed, and competitiveness could make him Tyreek Hill lite in a best-case scenario. It's enough to keep an eye on his progress this summer. |

Penix is participating in Phase 2 of the Falcons' offseason program, which consists of drills and individual work. Penix has said he expects to be ready for Week 1, but will that be soon enough to put him in a position to compete with Tagovailoa for the job? We see Tua as the early favorite, but it's a situation to watch. |

He is the all-time leader for Clemson DBs with the single-season record for forced fumbles (5) and career forced fumbles (8). Terrell has the ability to play both inside as a slot corner and outside as a boundary corner. His versatility and aggression could make him a fine starter for the Falcons. |

A team spokesperson told Marc Raimondi of ESPN that Penix is participating in Phase 2 of the Falcons' offseason program, which consists of drills and individual work. Penix, 26, has torn an ACL three times in eight years, twice tearing the ACL in his right knee while in college. He expects to be ready for Week 1, but will that be soon enough to put him in a position to compete with Tua Tagovailoa for the job? Stay tuned. |

So, as The Athletic's Josh Kendall suggests, health is the first piece of information we need to determine what kind of competition he'll face from free-agent addition Tua Tagovailoa. From there, it's going to be about who best fits into new coach Kevin Stefanski's offense. While Tagovailoa is the favorite, it's hard to imagine the Falcons not giving Penix a shot this year, considering they spent the No. 8 pick on him just two years ago. But a new coaching staff and personnel department will likely feel less pressure to play him. |

| Footballguys view: Anthony's grandfather Dwight Lee played running back for the Falcons in 1968, so this is a reunion of sorts. Anthony had the second fastest three cone time (6.86) at the Combine, so you know he has the quickness to get open. He only projects as a slot receiver, and Anthony isn't anything special after the catch, but a roster spot on the team's poor wide receiver depth chart is ripe for the picking. The Falcons gave him a bigger bonus than seventh round picks got last year, so expect him to at worst make the practice squad. |
