Buccaneers | Charlie Heck to start early Sun Aug 31, 03:27 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers OT Charlie Heck will start at left tackle until OT Tristan Wirfs (knee) is able to return to the lineup. Wirfs is expected to return at some point in September.
Footballguys view: Expect the Bucs to keep a tight end in to help Heck at times. Cade Otton is probably going to miss at least Week 1 with a hamstring injury, so the team will call on Payne Durham, Ko Kieft, and Devin Culp to play larger roles than usual. The offense won't be top form without Wirfs and Godwin against the Falcons to open the season, but the matchup is still favorable for Baker Mayfield and company. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers TEs Devin Culp, Payne Durham and Ko Kieft might be thrust into bigger roles in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons if TE Cade Otton (leg) is unable to go. It's uncertain which player would be tabbed to start, although Kieft probably has the most experience in the system, while Durham is seen as the best blocker of the triumvirate.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin (ankle) will miss the first month of the season and possibly more, general manager Jason Licht announced on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Footballguys view: Godwin will miss at least the first month of the season, so it could be more than just four weeks. While Godwin is out, rookie WR Emeka Egbuka will be tasked with doing more opposite Mike Evans. Once Godwin returns (and perhaps takes some time to shake off the rust), he should perform like a WR3/flex play. |

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed free agents QB Connor Bazelak, WRs Garrett Greene and Dennis Houston, and TE Tanner Taula to the practice squad on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cade Otton (leg) is dealing with a different leg injury than the hamstring issue he dealt with earlier in camp, and his status for Week 1 is in question, according to head coach Todd Bowles.
Footballguys view: If Otton has to miss time, the Buccaneers will turn to Payne Durham in his place. We were interested in Otton this season, especially early on with Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan missing time. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin (ankle) passed his physical on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The team is still expected to take it slowly with him, and he might not practice until Week 2.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers OT Tristan Wirfs (knee) passed his physical Tuesday, Aug. 26, and he was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list and added to the 53-man roster.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Tez Johnson caught all eight of his targets for 58 yards and a touchdown in the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Aug. 23.
Footballguys view: Johnson lasted until the seventh round of the draft because he is tiny (5'10" 154) by NFL standards, but with Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan out early in the season, he should get on the field at times and show that he belongs. Johnson is cat quick and could make some plays against defenses more concerned with Mike Evans and Bucky Irving. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers S Shilo Sanders, who was ejected from the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, Aug. 23, was waived by the team on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cade Otton is entering the final season of his current deal and said that he would be interested in a contract extension. However, it appears uncertain if the organization has mutual interest in bringing him back for 2026 and beyond.
Footballguys view: We'll see what Otton can do this season, especially with WR Chris Godwin banged up. With Godwin out of action for the start of the regular season, QB Baker Mayfield could be leaning more on guys like Otton and rookie WR Emeka Egbuka. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jaden Smith was waived Friday, Aug. 22.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers QB Michael Pratt (hand) was waived from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, Aug. 21, after the two sides reached an injury settlement.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin (ankle) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, Aug. 21, but he won't play until October. The plan is to have him practicing by Week 2, and the team feels he is on schedule with where he should be.
Footballguys view: He can be practicing by Week 2, but Godwin needs to get back into football shape at that time which could take a couple more weeks. With a current ADP of WR40, Godwin's draft status will drop upon this news. The fantasy stock for rookie WR Emeka Egbuka should continue to rocket up the charts. |

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jalen McMillan (neck) will start the regular season on the Reserve/Injured list and may not return until after the team's Week 9 bye, according to sources.
Footballguys view: McMillan is the second wide receiver projected to miss some time this season. Chris Godwin underwent ankle surgery, but is expected to return to the field sometime this season, likely earlier than McMillan at this rate. The Buccaneers will now rely heavily on receivers Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka to start the season, with both Godwin and McMillan set to miss some time. Footballguy Sigmund Bloom believes rookie Tez Johnson might be worth watching as the season draws nearer. Also worth remembering: TE Cade Otton's string of high-end outings last year came with Godwin and Evans both sidelined. |
Head coach Todd Bowles said at a press conference that Jalen McMillan has a severe neck strain and that he will not be ready to play for the team's Week 1 game against the Falcons.
Footballguys view: Bowles did not say how much more time McMillan will miss, but Tampa Bay Times staffer Rick Stroud reports the wideout will be placed on injured reserve. If so, McMillan will have to miss four games (but it could reportedly be more). McMillan was a third-round pick last year, and he had 37 catches for 461 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie. Remember, the Buccaneers have not activated Chris Godwin from the PUP list yet. With McMillan out and Godwin questionable at best, first-round pick Emeka Egbuka will have a sizable, immediate role alongside Mike Evans. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Christian Izien (oblique) sustained an injured oblique during the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Aug. 16.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jalen McMillan (neck) was carted to the locker room after landing on his neck while attempting a catch during the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Aug. 16.
Footballguys view: McMillan is set to be the #3 receiver for the Bucs to open the season with Chris Godwin likely to be on the PUP list for at least the first four games. While the team could be less aggressive passing downfield early in the season because left tackle Tristan Wirfs is going to miss time, McMillan showed a knack for the splash play last year and was at least draftable before suffering this injury. Seventh round rookie Tez Johnson has had a great spring and summer could get in with the first team in practice while McMillan is on the mend. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield played so well in the joint practice against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, Aug. 14, that he will not play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 16, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans will not play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 16, after performing well during the joint practice against the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, Aug. 14, according to Todd Bowles.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Michael Pratt (back) was moved to the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Aug. 13, after clearing waivers.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers QB Michael Pratt (back) was waived/injured Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: Pratt was a seventh-rounder in last year's draft who lost the battle for the backup role to Malik Willis in Green Bay. This year, he's the odd man out in a fight between Kyle Trask and Teddy Bridgewater. |
Free-agent WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint (Panthers) and WR Cody Thompson (Buccaneers) recently worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Free-agent RB Jase McClellan (Falcons) agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, Aug. 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Rachaad White (groin) is considered day-to-day because of his groin injury, according to head coach Todd Bowles.
Footballguys view: We were bracing for worse news when White had additional testing, but it sounds like this won't be something that affects White in Week 1. It does still open the door for Sean Tucker to make this more of a committee behind Bucky Irving. The Bucs really like Tucker, although White is still the best passing down back they have. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Josh Williams (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 11. RB Owen Wright (undisclosed) is out, though.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers RB Rachaad White (groin) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 11.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Josh Williams (hamstring) remains sidelined due to a hamstring injury, and he has been out for at least a week with the injury.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers RB Rachaad White (groin) suffered a groin injury during the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 9, and will not return.
Footballguys view: White is going to miss at least a few weeks, and he is undergoing additional testing. The team really likes third string back Sean Tucker and they should feel comfortable with him as the #2 back going into the season if White's injury will sideline him into the regular season. This could also boost the early season ceiling for Bucky Irving, who has been working on pass protection this offseason. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Dennis Houston (groin) left the preseason game against the Tennessee Titans due to a groin injury.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers RB Sean Tucker rushed 13 times for 50 yards and a touchdown in the preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 9, while adding a catch for no gain on his lone target.

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Ryan Miller (head) has been cleared to return to the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 9, after being checked for a concussion.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers WR Ryan Miller (head) left the preseason game early Saturday, Aug. 9, and is being evaluated for a concussion.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin (ankle) is making good progress in his recovery, but general manager Jason Licht said it is too early to say if Godwin will be ready for the start of the regular season.
Footballguys view: Licht did indicate that the team is satisfied with the progress Godwin has made in recovering from the injury. Beyond that, the Bucs are confident enough that Godwin will recover fully that they signed him this offseason to a three-year, $66 million contract that has no language that protects the team if Godwin's ankle prevents him from playing. It's safe to say the team expects Godwin will be back, even if it's not Week 1. Godwin is being drafted as WR36 in Round 7. There's plenty of long-term upside at that price, but the early-season risk is obvious. |
