Lions | DET interested in extending Jameson Williams Sun Aug 31, 12:21 PM
The Detroit Lions have started discussions with WR Jameson Williams regarding a potential contract extension, according to general manager Brad Holmes.
Footballguys view: This tends to corroborate reports that Williams role was being expanded in camp. It's possible that he and Amon-Ra St. Brown (who had a strong camp himself according to all reports) are more of a 1A/1B this year, which doesn't necessarily mean that St. Brown is overvalued. The Lions also have huge athletic third round pick Isaac TeSlaa, who dazzled in the preseason, as their newly minted #3 receiver. |
The Detroit Lions and DE Aidan Hutchinson (leg) have started having discussions regarding a contract extension, according to general manager Brad Holmes.
Footballguys view: That contract Micah Parsons got from the Packers (record-setting extension worth $188 million over four years) is going to change the structure for a Lions deal with Hutchinson. As one of the best EDGE defenders in the league, Hutchinson is likely to get a huge payday. However, he's returning from a major injury, having suffered season-ending tibia and fibula fractures last fall (October). |
Free-agent WR Ronnie Bell (Lions), TE Zach Horton (Lions), WR Tom Kennedy (Lions), WR Jackson Meeks (Lions) and RB Jacob Saylors (Lions) were signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Detroit Lions WR Tim Patrick was shipped to the Jacksonville Jaguars Wednesday, Aug. 27, in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2026.
Footballguys view: Patrick was acquired last year from the Broncos, and he had 394 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions feel good about their WR room behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Rookie Isaac Teslaa has an opportunity to take over as the no.3 receiver, and we love his upside and potential red zone presence. In deeper leagues, Teslaa should pay off like a 'what the heck' flex. |

The team also placed DE Josh Paschal (undisclosed) on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. All four players will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Detroit Lions WR Isaac TeSlaa caught two passes for 41 yards during the preseason game against the Houston Texans Saturday, Aug. 21.
Link to storyDetroit Lions RB Sione Vaki (undisclosed) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 21, because of an undisclosed injury.
Link to storyDetroit Lions DE Josh Paschal (undisclosed) will be out longer than expected, according to head coach Dan Campbell. The team hoped he would practice in September.
Link to storyDetroit Lions WR Isaac TeSlaa will be receiving more work with QB Jared Goff and the first-team offense moving forward after performing well with the second-team offense, according to head coach Dan Campbell.
Footballguys view: While it was assumed Tim Patrick would start the season as the team's No. 3 wide receiver, TeSlaa's rapid ascension is threatening the veteran. Also, according to The Sporting News, Patrick has struggled mightily this offseason and is also injured. "He certainly has a chance to have a role in our offense and has done a great job getting better every day," QB Jared Goff said. Still, as impressive as he's been, TeSlaa has "barely" gotten run with the starters in practice, according to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. Seems like that will change. |
Detroit Lions QB Kyle Allen has a slight lead over QB Hendon Hooker in the competition to serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback because Allen has played better in the team's last two preseason games, according to head coach Dan Campbell.
Footballguys view: This a terrible sign for Hooker's development heading into the third year of his career. He entered the league recovering from ACL surgery, but hasn't improved enough to two years to be better than a journeyman. His athleticism and ability to add value as a runner created some intrigue in superflex dynasty leagues, but that is waning now. He's not an essential hold. |

Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff said he was impressed with the performance of the offense during the week of joint practices with the Miami Dolphins. 'I think things started to kind of jell a little bit certainly,' Goff said.
Footballguys view: So far, there's no indication that the Lions offense will experience a post-Ben Johnson hangover. The Dolphins were bad on both sides of the ball and have an entirely new starting secondary, so perhaps we shouldn't read too much into this. |

Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta (undisclosed) will 'miss a little bit of time,' according to head coach Dan Campbell, with an undisclosed injury.
Footballguys view: This no reason to be alarmed yet, but LaPorta got off to a slow start last year because of injuries. We'll be monitoring this and hoping that he's back on the field within a week at the most. If he's not, then he's not as attractive a pick as the #4 tight end off of the board. |

Detroit Lions WR Isaac TeSlaa registered two receptions for 46 yards in the Hall of Fame Game preseason loss against the Los Angeles Chargers Thursday, July 31, including catches of 22 and 24 yards.
Footballguys view: TeSlaa is probably going to have a small role and play mainly on special teams this year, but he has a high ceiling and the Lions love him. This was an auspicious start to his NFL career. |
Detroit Lions RB Craig Reynolds ran 10 times for 38 yards and a touchdown, while he added a 10-yard reception on his only catch and target, in the Hall of Fame Game preseason loss against the Los Angeles Chargers Thursday, July 31.

Free-agent RB Jacob Saylors (UFL) signed an undisclosed deal with the Detroit Lions Tuesday, July 29. TE Luke Deal (undisclosed) was waived/injured.
Footballguys view: Let's see what Saylors can do in practice and the preseason. He was named All-UFL in 2024, and he had the most rushing yards (461) of any back in the league. Saylors has been with four NFL teams since coming out of East Tennessee State in 2022. |

Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams said he is running more route under offensive coordinator John Morton. 'I knew I could run more routes, but he's putting me in position to run more routes so I'm getting better with cuts and angles and how to run this route and that route, so I would say I'm more polished in my route game,' Williams said.
Footballguys view: This is not the first item that indicates Williams will have an increased role under the new offensive coordinator. Williams current Footballguys consensus ADP is WR26 and 55 overall. He was WR24 on a points per game basis in PPR leagues last year, so he could easily outproduce his current cost if his target share and production increase. |
Free-agent RB Lew Nichols (Eagles) recently met with the Detroit Lions.
Link to storyDetroit Lions RB Sione Vaki (hamstring) did not participate in practice Thursday, July 24.
Footballguys view: Vaki is an intriguing dynasty prospect as he works behind David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. We like his violent running style and ability to make plays as a receiver out of the backfield. The Lions need to be careful with this hamstring injury as it can linger if not given time to heal. |
Detroit Lions RB Sione Vaki (leg) will not participate in practice Tuesday, July 22.

Link to storyDetroit Lions OT Taylor Decker (undisclosed) is expected to return to the field after the Hall of Fame game, according to head coach Dan Campbell.
Link to storyDetroit Lions LB Alex Anzalone (hamstring) is out with a hamstring injury, according to head coach Dan Campbell. No timetable for his return was given.
Footballguys view: According to local reports, this news confirms that Anzalone is not voluntarily missing practice as a "hold-in" protest against not having a new contract. Anzalone would like a new deal entering the final year of his three-year, $18.75 million contract signed in 2023. But on Sunday, head coach Dan Campbell felt fairly certain Anzalone wasn't the type of player to sit out on his own accord. Veteran Zach Cunningham, who was signed as a free agent back in May, will get more work in Anzalone's absence. |

Free-agent RB Toa Taua (UFL) tried out for the Detroit Lions Friday, July 18, but was not signed.
Footballguys view: The Lions are just updating their emergency list here. They have a stacked room at the position, and don't get us started about how much we appreciate Sione Vaki in deep dynasty. Taua has worked out for the Eagles before, but he'll continue to work and try to get into the NFL on more than a tryout basis. |
